Oilers to Sign Jagr?

The Edmonton Journal is reporting that the Edmonton Oilers are close to signing Jaromir Jagr who has spent this season playing in Russia to a deal.

It is not reported how long any possible deal may be for or how much the deal may be worth however this move would be a big boost for the Oilers who have just lost Lubomir Visnovsky for the season. It is also noted that many people feel that Ales Hemsky would benefit from a highly talented player on his wing.

HTR would like to mention that Jagr would have to clear waivers before reporting the Oilers if an agreement was to be reached because he played the season in Europe. The likelihood of Jagr clearing waivers is very low at this point of the season as he would be considered to be a prime pickup for many teams leading into the playoffs.

I heard a rumor that the Islanders might pick him up off waivers if edmonton signs him and then try to trade him back to edmonton, however my understanding of the rules was that if you make a waiver claim and try to trade that player in the same season that he would have to be made available as a waiver pick up to any teams underneath them in waiver priority first.

Is there much point to this? Unless Tambellini can figure out a way to intimidate every team into passing him by you are just wasting your time. Wait until next year, then bring him in. If he really wants to be back in the NHL and with the Oil he will wait.

Why would he play there? Jagr to Edmonton is the NHL equivalent to lipstick on a pig.

  4. Radio says:

Pointless since he'd have to clear waivers. Whoever originated this rumor doesn't know the NHL very well.

  5. mojo19 says:

Well he is one of my all time favourite players so I hope he does come back to the NHL either this year or next

  6. mojo19 says:

lol, the thing that takes keywords at the top of the page reads:

    Russia         Free Agents

    Lipstick on a Pig

    Jaromir Jagr        Pig

    Hockey Rumours     Lipstick

Actually I meant Jagr (elite player) is the lipstick on Oiler's misguided notion that they're a competitive LNH team (pig). Sort of like Sundin was on the Leafs last season.  Though I think I perfer your misreading over my intention.

  8. mojo19 says:

hahaha, no no, I knew exactly what you meant, I just thought it was funny when I opened up this article, there were a list of random words at the top of the page before the article and thats what they were. Then when I read your comment I saw where they came from.

    Good times

Mark Spector reported as a guest on Hockey Central at Noon that this rumour was started by a blogger and has no validity. Just some guy who decided to write up this story, it is according to Spector, completely false.
