to no surprise, Mike Reilly chose the Wild to sign.

His dad is one of the minority owners there and he is from the state.

He should be able to jump in right away. He did not look out of place at the Worlds this past May, playing against old pros. Suter should be a good mentor for him.

In a very interesting deal, the Sens traded Legwand and Lehner to the Sabres for the 21st pick. The Sens now have 2 1sts.

The Sabres still have 2 2nds and the 1st pick in the 3rd, and an army of young talent already. So, addressing their goaltending was an absolute must.

There’s been some rumors of the Sens maybe trying to use their 2 picks to move up. They have options. I wonder though to move up to get who?

Are they looking at a power forward like a Lawson Crouse? Or, one of the high end defenceman?

Not much Leaf news yet. Lots of anticipation, but nothing so far. Been actually pretty quiet on the rumor front for a few hours now. I am not sure if that is a good thing or not. I can only hope it is.

Here’s to hoping we get big Leaf news today.

  2. nordiques100 says:

wow. From all accounts, Dougie Hamilton a Flame. just wow.

I would have never thought Seguin and Hamilton would be traded before Kessel.

  3. leafy says:

Lucic to Los Angeles for today’s 13th overall pick, prospect Colin Miller, and G Martin Jones. Boston retains half of Lucic’s $6 mil salary.

So even while eating half of Lucic’s salary, the most Boston can get is the 13th pick.

I remember a few of you guys were saying that Kessel for a top 5 pick in this year’s draft is a mistake (even WITHOUT retaining any of Kessel’s salary). Do you care to rethink that one?

  4. leafy says:

Put another way, the Lucic trade shows that for the Leafs to make a Kessel trade for a high first pick work, they’d have to retain a significant amount of salary.

    • Mapleleaves says:

Paying for a player you don’t have for 8 years is a lot different the 1 season. I’d be happy to take a cap dump from the other team for a few seasons.

    • TmLeafan says:

The Lucic deal and a potential Kessel deal are in totally different ballparks. Lucic is one year away from being a UFA so basically a rental. Kessel is a top 5 scorer locked in for the next 7 seasons. If the Leafs retain any salary they are absolutely retarded.

  5. leafy says:

I’m happy with Mitch Marner. A bit nervous we passed on Hanifin, but nobody has a crystal ball.

Some are worried about his size, but this is only the beginning of what will be a prolonged rebuild. Plenty of high picks coming up.

  6. leafy says:

What do people think of Boston’s moves? Looks to me like they panicked.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Sweeny is a terrible hire, Neely promoting his entourage

      • LN91 says:

Boston has rebuild, they are old and starting to get slow footed with age.

I respect Sweeney and Boston’s mentality to bite the the bullet and realize they need to kind of rebuild. Funny how a perennial Stanley Cup threat could be more progressive then the Leafs.

        • leafs_wallace93 says:

Off the board with three picks in a row? It’s one thing to retool through a good draft year but passing on Connor and Barzel?

Hardly concerned about the big bad Bruins.

          • Gambo says:

hahaha I was worried when they had 3 in a row, but it seems like they completely blew it. With Lucic gone and Chara hugely declining, yeah I’m not concerned at all about them anymore.

            • leafs_wallace93 says:

And Chiarelli is f’ing up the Oil, good times.

            • Steven_Leafs0 says:

I can’t believe they punted those picks so bad. I mean Zboril was good but to leave Barzal and picking a projected low 1st and early 2nd was a screw up. They could have traded down got those two guys AND got more picks. Huge fail considering the potential.

I think they should have taken Barzal, Zboril, and Chabot. Two defence to replace the lost Hamilton and eventually Chara and take the best forward on the board. If they didn’t want those guys then trade down. Yikes.

              • TmLeafan says:

Ya Oilers got Griffin Reinhart and he is nothing special they got him for pretty much the same price as Dougie Hamilton.

  7. leafs_wallace93 says:

Phil & Dion are becoming the Kaberle watch 2.0 not in the mood to wait four years for Joe Colbourn + Percy.

Get the deal done already and move on as a franchise.

  8. doorman says:

While I like Marner and his skill set, I think the Leafs made a mistake passing on Hannifin and Provorov. I think Marner and Strome will both be good players, but I think you always take the stud dman over the winger.

I do however find myself less then impressed with the draft from a fans point of view so far. I like picking up extra picks, but the talk of getting it right and hitting that home run at 24 leaves saying WTF???? Granted none of us know what they tried to do, it just seems that with all the talk a disappointment.

  9. leemon says:

Am I the only one that realizes the 2nd (34th)round pick is our own original pick from the bernier deal? and totally agree Doorman for all the hype leading up to the draft, It was an epic fail. right now we’re watch teams make deals that are using cap space. While TML management sits on their collective hands to make a big deal. Exactly hove much money did Colorado have to retain in the Orielly deal? That’s what I thought. A guy who will make 7+ million a year was moved just like that. But lets be patient in a year where a draft where it was the deepest in years and a and a UFA class that’s this bad, Now was the time to make a deal. but now we have to wait till next year cause that’s the way its looking, to pick up picks and prospects in a not as deep draft. And tell me again how only getting 2 more picks is “getting more picks for hunter to work with” by trading away our 1st is a good idea. just so we can say we needed a 2nd sheesh. we were supposed to be a team to watch with the possible deals now im watching all these other teams making deal while we become “patient” in moving the core group. lol Sorry guys turned into a bit of a rant lol that is all

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Lol, dropping 10 spots and D’Amigo got us our best goaltender in a decade and a third?

    • Steven_Leafs0 says:

Yeah I wouldn’t have minded dropping if Konecny wasn’t still on the board. And I really wish Kylington made it one more spot. So close to getting a huge steal at 61.

      • LN91 says:

I do not think the Leafs would have drafted him.

Mark Hunter put alot of work in this draft, and from 20-90 it looks like the crap was a draft shoot, so the Leafs got more picks.

Really happy with the draft, I guess they are following the model of skill/speed/character now, and focus on size later. Which is opposite to the Burke thinking.

  10. TmLeafan says:

So apparently the Pens offered their 2016 1st, Pouliot, Kunitz and Scuderi for Kessel but Leafs turned it down. I think its the right move. Switch Pouliot for Maata and think thats a good deal. Then can trade Kunitz for picks.

    • Steven_Leafs0 says:

Can you give the link where this was reported? I’m totally ok with NHL15-ing a deal similar to this with the pens. Bahahaha.

      • TmLeafan says:

saw it on Twitter came from Rob Rossi I think his name is he is a writer for the Pens.

  11. doorman says:

I think there is a deal still there to be made. Truth be told I wouldn’t have cried at that return for Kessel.

    • TmLeafan says:

me neither because Kunitz probably gets you a first and a prospect at the deadline too. But gives you an idea about what the Leafs are expecting in return, he is not going on the cheap thats for sure.

      • doorman says:

For sure and I do like that they aren’t trading him for the sake of it. He is our only good chip, The others get mid picks so the return is more of a question mark.

As fr Dion he isn’t going anywhere right now, Babcock wants to coach him it seems. He will be better in an actual system, imo

  12. Steven_Leafs0 says:

Ok I’m going to ask it here because apparently anyone who asked EA online was ignored.

I took the most recent online rosters in NHL15 and made the trades that happened since the April 22 update. I created the better players (Eichel and Hanifin) and left them in FA. I started a BeaGM mode and it crashes at the load up screen everytime. If I use the regular online rosters it works but here it won’t.

Anyone have a solution? I’m extremely annoyed. Also note I have the digital copy of the game.

  13. leafs_wallace93 says:

    Is Pouliet even any good?

  14. Gambo says:

Phil Kessel is going to train with Gary Roberts this summer. I can’t believe i’m saying this, but maybe keep him this year and trade him next summer after he has the best season of his career.

I mean, we all know his skill level. We all know about his awful off season training. If he had normal off season training he would show improvements, but training with the best in the business in Gary Roberts? This could be huge.

Not at all against trading Phil as soon as possible, but this is something to consider.

  15. Gambo says:

I reaaally want the Leafs to somehow grab Leon Draisaitl from the Oilers. It would be tough to do without giving up one of Rielly, Nylander, or Marner. But imagine a line of:

    Nylander-Draisaitl-Marner

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Kadri and Phaneuf with 2 million retained?

      • Steven_Leafs0 says:

No retaining contracts more than 3 years long. The way I look at it to have a cap hit in years 4-7 will cost us a solid draft pick to convince a team to eat 50% salary on a rental to ensure we are fully competitive.

If we retain salary we better get a huge pick for compensation. Take back the bad contract to fill out the roster and prepare to eat half that salary at the deadline to get a pick out of him.

        • Gambo says:

I generally agree in that they shouldn’t retain any salary from either Dion or Phil, but i’d retain 2 million from Dion for a return like Draisaitl. Potential big #1 center? Easy call for me.

          • Steven_Leafs0 says:

If the return is far exceeding his value like Draisaitl then sure. Thing is though I would rather include a 2nd rounder and take back a bad contract then eat his salary.

But yeah for that kind of return we have the potential to hit another JVR for Schenn kind of home run.

  16. Steven_Leafs0 says:

Jones flipped from Boston to SJ for 2016 1st and college prospect.

Can’t believe how much they got for Lucic (2015 & 2016 1st and 2 prospects) and how little for Hamilton (2015 1st & two 2nds) who signed for 6 years at $5.75M per.

  17. LN91 says:

    Bye Kessel #rebuildtime

    • Gambo says:

Underwhelming. Funny how everyone thought Toronto would get the world for him and a top 10 pick wasnt good enough.

      • LN91 says:

Gambo, these people on here are nuts.

You were never going to rebuild your entire squad with the Kessel deal, it was foolish to think you were going to get what you gave up.

Now, the Leafs have two solid (non blue-chip) prospects that Babcock could work with. Spaling (I was fond of in Nashville as a character player) who will most likely dealt at the deadline.

A 1st/3rd round draft pick…Which really is the focal point of the Kessel deal. If Mark Hunter/Kyle Dubas continue as a draft wizard, then this will really determine the trade.

        • Gambo says:

It’s not a bad deal, I think Pittsburgh came out on top though. Kapanen should be a top 6 forward, hopefully Harrington can become a shutdown defenseman, hopefully Hunter drafts well, and yeah Spaling should bring in a 3rd or 4th round pick. Toronto got value back which is what really matters, could be a complete failure of a trade, but only time will tell.

Worst part is they gave up on the future Milan Lucic – Tyler Biggs haha.

          • LN91 says:

Oh for sure, Kessel will go to Pittsburgh and probably score 40-50 goals next year. Might be a Stanley Cup Threat.

However, he was never going to be that here and never was going to. He’s the 4th best player in Pittsburgh, right where he belongs, while he was #1 in Toronto.

  18. doorman says:

I am not sad with the return actually. Would I have preferred Pouliot? Yes, however Harrington is a quality leadership kind of guy this team needs. Kappanen will be a decent top 6 imo. How high the first is and what they can do with it is the true measure of how this pans out. Los hoping it their own second they got not ours

    • Gambo says:

The first is conditional and lottery protected. If the Pens miss the playoffs this year it becomes a 2017 first. If they miss the playoffs in 2017 it becomes a second. They’ll make the playoffs though so it shouldnt be a problem.

      • LN91 says:

Yeah, especially in the weak East, not concerned about that.

So, Toronto should have 3 picks in the top #35.
