The Anaheim Ducks: The most over rated team in the NHL?
WOW! The Hockey News and many other people are pegging the Anaheim Ducks as this years Stanley Cup Champions, and I gotta say, that’s a load of bull. The Anaheim Ducks are seriously the most attrociously over rated team in the NHL.I’m going to start at their ridiculously streaky goaltending. Are JS Giguere and Ilya Bryzgalov really two goaltenders who can be trusted? They’re only both still there because neither one is trustable. Total chokers. When Giguere has two consecutive seasons of winning 30 games, we’ll talk, but damn, the guy has got consistancy issues. Bryzgalov is the same. He got hot during the playoffs, and all of a sudden he’s a starting goaltender? Do people not remember that’s how they got landed with Giguere’s ridiculous contract?
The defense looks star studded doesn’t it? Pronger and Niedermayer make it look good. The Ducks better hope they can have one of them both on the hole game, because I wouldn’t trust Dipenta, Beauchemin, Moran, or O’Donnel. They are hoping that the best two defensemen in the game can save a defense corpse with four sixth defensemen.
Then the forwards, also, over rated. Teemu Selanne is a super star, but other then that, they have Andy MacDonald, an obvious fluke. In fact, not even a fluke, he was made by Teemu Selanne, pretty easy. Marchant and Pahlson both suck, and they’re going to have to hope for the young guys to have huge seasons for them to win the cup.
To sum it up, I don’t think they’ll win the Cup, I think they’ll likely contend, Brian Bruke will make sure of that. But as it is, I doubt they’ll win a Cup.

You could have “Red Light” Tellqvist in net for Anaheim and they’d still make it to the Finals. 2 words. Pronger & Neidermeyer. They’ll make the Redden and Chara pairing look like minor leaguers.

Beauchemin is very good, as is O’Donnel.
Don’t forget Dustin Penner, the guy has loads of potential.
Andy MacDonald is overrated.
Both Niedermayer and Pronger have proven they can log an insane amount of minutes. Those two are simply not human, as far as that is concerned, so your point of them carrying the other four is certainly not out of the question. I would almost bet that is exactly what will happen
I do think their offense if overrated, but the wildcard is Penner. If Penner explodes and is separated from Teemu, teams will be hard-pressed to figure out how to defend this team.
I agree that goaltending is the question mark with them. Ever since Giguere had to get rid of his “extra padding” he has not been so effective, and I doubt he will ever be. But the jury is out on Bryzgalov. He could be the answer, but that is to be seen. However, even with middle of the road goaltending, they have a very good outlook.
But you have to play the season and deal with injuries and chemistry and all the adverse aspects of playing to win the cup. If it was just decided on paper at the beginning of the season the Rangers would have passed the Habs in cups by now.

The Ducks are NOT overrated. Any hockey team that has Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer on its blueline is going to give any team in the league a hard time, regardless of who their forwards are. Anaheim, if it wants to, can have one of these guys on the ice for nearly every single minute of a game. Giguere and Bryzgalov are really going to benefit from having these two guys in front of him.
Beauchemin and O’Donnell are very trusty defensemen. Beauchemin, in particular, is pretty good. Moran is a very good shotblocker. Their defense is fine. Their forwards are fine. Andy McDonald is the real deal. Where you get the “obvious fluke” stuff from, is beyond me. Have you watched him play at all? I don’t see how anyone who has watched this guy play, can call him a fluke. Marchant and Pahlsson are both very good penalty killers. Just because they don’t score 40 goals a year, doesn’t mean they suck. The Ducks are definitely going to contend. And in today’s NHL, you never, ever count a team totally out before the season even begins.
Anaheim is a great team, both goalies ARE dependable, they have great defense, and they’re offense knows how to score, not to mention their amazing prospects. They probably have the best prospects in the game today.
And for that theory of Bryzgalov, what does that mean for Carolina? Cam Ward was awful in the regular season then great in the playoffs. Does that mean that he’ll also be awful? That would mean that Carolina would have an awful goaltending lineup. Why doesn’t anybody mention that?
The’ll need more than that. For ONCE leafy is right.

I do think the Ducks are the most overated team, and never think in a million years they will win the cup. They don’t have any offence. Teemu is getting up there. Last year was a bounce back year, but HE IS IN DECLINE. The Oilers torched Bryzgalov last year in the playoffs. He was average. The Flames made him look good because they had equally crappy offence.
All they have are two superstar d-man, everyone else is unproven or in decline. Thats not how you build a team.
People can rag on their offense all they want, but any good coach will tell you that “DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS”….. I think that with the pair of defensemen that they do have, they have as good of a shot as anybody at winning a questionable Western Conference.
With, or even without Teemu, they have a shot. Their defense, at it’s best, is strong enough. Imagine two Lidstrom’s in Detroit. If they cloned him, Detroit’s chances would literally double as well. Even in a new NHL, defense is still THAT important.
Does anyone know what the Oilers offensive lineup will look like? Sorry it’s unrelated, but I can’t exactly make a topic about this and I need to know (Specifically at RW). They are pretty deep with 4 solid RWers, and I’m just curious if anyone knows what their lines will look like. Thanks.
I agree completely. I don’t even see them making the playoffs, little own making a run at the cup. Sure they have probably 2 of the best 5 or 6 d-men in the league, but give me a break.
I wont say your wrong about a great team, but that doesnt mean I agree. It is too hard to rpedict in the new NHL. St. Louis or Colombus could make it to the finals and I would not be all that surprised. But what I will argue with is the dependable goaltending. Thats a joke. Giguerre played good for the playoffs one year, became head goalie, then sucks. Bryzgalov plays good for the playofs, head goalie? pattern?

I fyour knew anything about hockey you would see that the ducks are going to be unreal. defense aside, the ducks are going to light the lamp. andy macdonald is no fluke. watch for him to post even bigger numbers. on that note cheechoo is oerrated too right? because thornton made him. so then i guess the sharks have a terrible offense as well. Not only is the huge penner gonna be a thorn is the side of every other team, but chistov is back and has hands just as good as anybody in the league. dont forget the sophomores perry and getzlaf. they are gonna be a great tandem together. true giguere and bryzgalov arent the best in the NHL, but they wont need to be great. And beacuhemin is unreal. he is gonna be paired with scotty and they already work well together. and shane o brien is gonna make the team this year and is gonna suprise the entire league. every team is jealous of the ducks system. they are so deep in every position it is almost unfair. yah. so think that over and if you want to take anything back let me know.

I’m already planning a trip next May to southern California as either the Ducks or the Sharks will be in the Western Final.
They have alot more than that, Getzlaf, Perry, McDonald( and no he is not an “obvious fluke”), Beuchamin, Giguere, Bryzgalof, Penner, etc. etc.
This team will challenge for the Western Con. title, but will fall just short to Calgary and maybe Nashville, but if Burke can keep this team together for 2 or 3 more years then they have a legitimate shot at the Cup.

Why do you keep bashing the ducks? Ummm…is it because the leafs’ hopes of making the playoffs are impossible to none—I’d say yes.
Is that why the kings whupped the ducks ass in both of the games this preseason? Granted, preseason doesn’t mean squat, I guess we’ll see on friday night.

Well I haven’t heard ANYONE talking about how good this team is…
They are a young team aside from basically 3 key players in Selanne, Pronger and Neidermayer…
They have R. Neidermayer and Marchant as 3rd liners…
They also have a ton of young players who all have some good potential…
I won’t say they will win the cup, or even make the playoffs, but for a young team, they are pretty damn good, and will win a lot more games than say Pittsburgh or Washington.
There is something to be said for a rebuilding team that can still win and has a very real chance to make the playoffs…

I know Phaneuf is good, but he doesn’t match up to Pronger and Neidermeyer combined. Those two can get you far.

they might need some better scoring, and with goalies, both are good, if one is isn’t doing the job, they can switch… Kinda like in Montreal with Huet and Aibisher…

Still overrated? I don't think so. The Ducks still have to work on some facets of their game, but I believe they're in it for the long run to the cup. Everyone on this team is contributing and outsider Pronger solidified his place with his playing and when he slammed Ekman and the Penguins. This team with the young guys are exicting to watch and they're big and fast. Biggest concern is goal tending, but Guiguere is looking better. Just stay out of the shootouts!
