As trade deadline nears, Maple Leafs are open for business

James Reimer is an interesting case. If he continues his stellar play — his .932 save percentage is second best in the league — he would be attractive to playoff-bound teams looking for some depth in net.

Others on the list — and we’re thinking players such as Shawn Matthias, Michael Grabner and Nick Spaling — could be packaged in the pursuit of a higher pick or higher-end prospect.

The problem with Matthias is, there was hope he would provide some offence, thus helping both the team and his trade value. Four goals in 46 games does not do that.

There is a perception that players such as Morgan Rielly, Nazem Kadri and Jake Gardiner are untouchable. Let’s remember this, before taking the notion to the bank, however: Shanahan and Lamoriello have no interest in sharing their plans with anyone and aren’t above making a shocking move or two.
