Alexei Kovalev. Do you want him?

Wanted: Someone to take this guy off of our hands.
Alex Kovalev’s recent remarks slamming the Canadiens should leave the team with no choice but to get rid of him prior to next season, but it won’t be easy. The only trade options would be dealing with another team’s overpaid underachievers, buying him out which would see most of his contract count against the cap over the next four years, demotion to the minors in hopes that he wouldn’t report and thus be suspended without pay, or demoting him and hoping someone claims him off recall waivers.”

Kovalev only shines if he’s on a line with someone of equal or greater skill, which he could find again in Pittsburgh. And if he is a failure, then at least he’s gone in two years back to free agency, just as Malkin and Staal’s new contracts kick into effect. Kovalev has been a good playoff performer, 84 pts in 100 games. That’s good experience that can’t be easily bought. Remember how well Selanne played once he returned to Anaheim? I’d trade a 3rd round draft pick (the one we got for Dominic Moore) and a low prospect for him. Gainey would be hard pressed to find a better offer.

“Trade? The only possible deals the Canadiens could make would require them to throw in a real asset or two – something Gainey would be reluctant to do – or would involve trading Montreal’s problem for someone else’s problem.

Pavel Kubina anyone? How about Adrian Aucoin? Can you say Alexei Yashin or Brian McCabe?”

gainey signed bonk to a three year contract – including the lockout year.  he overpaid for how he used bonk.  $3million for a third line center is high.
i understand the penalties with perezhogin, but i agree with your point that you have to give him a chance.  this may be simplistic but it's better to have 12 forwards who are all +11 than a bunch of forwards who are -20, even if the +11 guy takes a few bad penalties.

Lets just say for example that there is a team that was very far under the salary cap… Would you be willing to trade Kovalev (or Samsonov) and a #1 draft pick (for example) to the Rangers for a Dale Purinton type player?  So, would you give up a #1 pick to rid your team of a high salary type player without receiving anything in return?

i'd trade kubine for theo in a secong. sure theo stinks, but wait a year and he's gone, Kubina is a 4 year curse

habs should package with Samsonov, Bonk, Aebischer and a pick and get a decent second line center maybe Bill Guerin or Antoine Vermette?

I've had enough of that Eastern European style of lazy hockey.  The great russian players loaf around the ice and then turn it up for short bursts and do amazing things.  I'll take a less talented guy thats going to give me 100% the entire game any day.  Hell even Jagr looks lazy on the ice at times.  Jagr, Gonchar, Malkin, Kovalev… they're all great players, but there's portions of every game where they're subpar players too.  It just gets really annoying…

Aebisher is UFA next season, he will not be traded someone will pick him up, Bob wont give him a contract next year I am sure.

And honestly I wouldnt trade both Bonk and Samsonov for Vermette whom is just as good as Bonk but has alot of heart I must say.

As far as Guerin goes… I wouldnt touch him at all, Guerin, Tkachuk and the likes have big salaries for minimal production in the past few years. Don't want another Kovalev on our roster please!

    Malkin – Jagr – Kovalev
That's actually a pretty good line!

Anyway, I'd want to keep Kovalev as a Habs fan unless we don't get a big name this off-season.  Kovalev just doesn't seem to play well with young guys so I'd trade him and let our youngsters (Kostitsyn, Grabovsky, Chipchura, Milroy, etc) get some ice-time.

i don't think taking/or giving kovalev away is the answer let's face it when he show's up he's the best player on this team by a mile!!no question about it!! i think if we sign briere and put briere on a line that looks like this: briere, ryder, higgins, 1st line 2nd line koivu, kovalev, lattendresse 3rd line:plekanec ,lapierre, johnson,4th line: grabovsky, murray, milroy ireally believe these lines would be balanced and deadly!! we don't need a pilon like mcCabe especiaaly if and when we resign souray!!(souray)is twice the defenceman anyway

  9. habsgod says:

mcCabe is a bum!! i wouldn't give you larry robinson in retirement for him!!kubina is a stiff !!! we already got 2-3 of those on our defence dandeneault , boullion and streit. but if the leafs want to hire gord stellick for old time sake to make one more trade!! that would be great for us!!(habs fans) because the deal would be mark streit for tomas kaberle!! what a rape!!!!! that would be for gainey and company!!!!!
