Allison and Lindros In…Maybe? Antropov Out…Maybe?

The Leafs deal with Jason Allison is closing in according to Sportsnet and the Fourth Period. It was also mentioned in today’s Toronto Star and Sun. It will be laden with incentives reportedly.

Find out more on Tomas Kaberle as HTR member dover reports.

The Big E may also be close to a deal with the Leafs. He too like Allison will get an incentive laden contract.

Those two would effectively take the place of Roberts and Nieuwendyk and Oneill was brought in to replace Nolan. Now the Leafs need a skilled guy to replaced Mogilny up front.

But while those two centres may end up in Toronto, big Nik Antropov may be on the way out. According to the Star he is receiving offers that are “three times” as much in Russia as what the Leafs are offering. Please for the sake of the team, take the Russian deal Nik and take Pony and Berg with you.

So who is left?

Kariya (but close to the Sharks maybe)

Zhamnov (to the Hawks…Again?)

Khabibulin member dover reports the following:

On Leafs Lunch on AM 640, it is said that Toronto is shopping Tomas Kaberle for a trade to free up cap room for future signings, and numerous teams are interested….

I hope LA picks up Satan, I don’t think Montreal can afford him, and I don’t want him in the same division as the Habs, much less with the Leafs.

unless lindros is gonna be effective as a winger, i dont see the point in bringin him in…

sundin and allison would centre the top 2 lines..

lindros shouldnt be on the 3rd line…

so unless he’s gonna play sundin or allison’s wing he’s pointlesss…

i would like to see them bring in satan to play on sundin’s wing…though i dont think they’d have enough money…they have like 8 mil to spend on like 7-8 players…

why would they trade kaberle?? they’d trade 2.3 million dollar contract to free up money? to sign who? at the rate free agent defenseman are going, 2.3 million would get like a marek malik-type player…id rather have kaberle

  4. G_Money says:

There is no way the Habs are still interested in Satan, they just got Kovalev, and they overpaid him severely.

  5. wingerxxx says:

Totally agreed. Trust me…Lindros is not a good natural winger. And he’s not a true third liner, just not good enough defensively. Plus, it would absolutely kill his point production. It will take all that Sundin and Allison have to make him produce as a winger. They’re better off going after someone less injury prone, and who is more adept at playing the wing.

  6. wingerxxx says:

Anson Carter? You sure about that? You’d be better off with Lindros on the right wing, and that’s not exactly saying much. Or even someone from the farm club.

  7. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Anson Carter had 1 bad year, and it was playing for LA, Washington, and New York…

  8. -Swizz- says:

although satan is not the same price range as lindros

id would rather them make an effort on him or roman hamrlik on D…

im not sure exactly what the market value of hamrlik is…but in my opinion, skill-wise he’s up there with adrian aucoin…mccabe/klee & kaberle/hamrlik would give them a set of 4dmen that could play 50minutes +

  9. -Swizz- says:

i would count out the habs after just signing kovy

does anyone know LA’s financial situation?

i know they just signed demitra

which could attract satan (they’re both slovakian right?)

  10. theleaflunch says:

Carter wouldn’t fit nearly as well as a lindros would.

  11. tml28 says:

    This is good news.

Everybody is forgetting about how good Antropov, Poni, and Berg played Last season. When they were paired with nieuwendyk everybody was raving about them, not everybody has forgot, Berg was solid last year and everybody was surprised, he will be better this season. They had Antro and poni on the 2nd line last year they both put up decent points and had great plus/minus with plus 14, there good players just give them a chance.

If they make these signings the team will be making a good improvement.

    Lets see:

And yes Lindros can play left wing he did with the Rangers.

Antropov was once paired with sundin and mogilny and they were awesome together, that was the year Antropov broke out.

With Sundin and Satan it would be similar

Not saying Leetch will resign but it would be great

Marchment may resign as he likes playing for the leafs and will come cheap, he is reliable, and is only like 35, he still is productable and Big.

The 2nd line will work well together Lindros is big, and so is allison, Oneill will stick up for both.

The 3rd line will be an outstanding checking line, and the 4th line will clean up the Garbage.

And Belfour is Belfour, and Tellqvist is ready, he is good.

    That is all

  12. theleaflunch says:

not sure of their money situation, but i think you’re right, if satan wants to play for the leafs, habs or kings. then he doesn’t have much choice.

    the kings should take him

  13. wingerxxx says:

Actually he’s been pretty off the for a bad year and a half, including a number of games before he went to New York. I’ve watched him in every game that he played in NY. He’s clearly lost his mental edge, plus he is absolutely awful defensively. Trust me…you don’t want him on your team unless you are totally desperate for 20 goals a year. I don’t think the Leafs offensive is quite at that stage yet. There are better options out there.

  14. 92-93 says:

ok, i know JFJ has done some pretty stupid moves but bringing Allison AND Lindros in is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. we don’t need Lindros, we have enough Centers already (Sundin, Antropov, Allison, Steen, Wellwood, Stajan) – even if Antropov is on his way out. as for Lindros playing on a wing? it doesn’t make sense – has he ever played on a wing before? why would the leafs risk things with this guy?

as for antropov on his way out – i am happy about this but too bad they couldn’t make a trade for him instead of letting him go to Russia. at least there’s a little ($1 million) cap space freed up there. Kaberle leaving? why? if they can land Rafalski they would have an awesome and relatively young defensive core of McCabe-Klee and Kaberle-Rafalski with Colliacovo, Pilar, and (coughs) Berg as the 7th D-guy.

I doubt if JFJ is stupid enough to sign Lindros and let go of Kaberle (what would they get in return – any suggestions?).

  15. Marky2Fresh says:

Kaberle for Jay Bouwmeester whos being rumoured as on the block? *strokes chin*

Yeah anyways I’ll keep dreaming. I dont care about Kaberle as long as they just don’t salary dump him for a pick or something stupid.

  16. Aetherial says:

If those contracts are only for a year with a club option, then he can *get by* this year.

Let’s face it, the Leafs are NOT under any stretch of imagination going to win the cup. They are playing out the string with this core and will likely suck for a few years to come.

They may be sellers at the trade deadline also. I would be surprised if they are challenging for a playoff spot.

  17. Marky2Fresh says:

I think Kilger on his worst day is still better than Poni because at least he does not do stupid things that lead to turn overs.

  18. 92-93 says:

for those who defend the play of Berg and Antropov, well, actually, I don’t really need to comment there because their play speaks for itself.

Keeping Marchment is a dumb idea along with signing Lindros. however, if i were to chose between Berg and Marchment (dry heaves), i suppose i would choose Marchment (berg makes $1.1 million dollars!!!).

  19. habs_punk says:

I wouldn’t say they overpaid him severely, it was on the high end for sure. But if he regains the chemistry with Koivu and Zednik, Kovy could be a bargain at that price.

  20. ndnhockeyfreak says:

STARS NEEDA GET kariya AND selanne……rafalski and mayb berard…COME ON….WE SUCK RITE NOW!!!

  21. JeffBurnz09 says:

Just don’t play Allison and Lindros on the same line…they’ll skate into eachother and both be out for a year or two.

Signing Lindros to the Leafs make sense, since he’ll take less money, and both have been hard for eachother for years now…and Allison is a good signing if he’s still the same player he used to be, and can stay healthy. But I don’t know if I’d want my two big free agent signings to be guys that have such question marks around them the way those two do. Bringing in one of them, as kind of a gamble type situation is fine, but bringing in both might be a risk.

  22. JeffBurnz09 says:

If they re-sign Modano, that’s all I need. They can be terrible for the next 5 years for all I care, as long as Modano retires in Dallas.

I wouldn’t mind Berard though, he’s a good player. I don’t think they’ll get Rafalski though. I hate Kariya, but I’d take him over Arnott.

  23. G_Money says:

I always thought that Sundin would be more suited to playing the wing, so Lindros could C a line with SUndin on the wing, and Allison would play with Oneill on the second line.

  24. -Swizz- says:

hmm well sundin did start off in quebec as a RW i believe..

i dont think he’s played wing in a long time though…if he could play wing then maybe it wouldnt be too bad to bring in lindros…

sundin is good on the faceoffs tho…but i suppose he can take the faceoff and then move to the wing..

  25. nordiques100 says:

he may be more effective on thewing. he could then break loose down the wing, swing around the net and fire a backhander. he has the size and speed to get around defencemen on the outside.

but lindros may be better on the wing now so he isnt playing up the middle and being prone to open ice hits

  26. Leafs88 says:

I like how JFJ is playing this… I like it a lot…. If we get those two, trade Kaberle for a high draft pick, we can go out and maybe take a serious run at Rafalski, whom I really like… Also, Satan or Palfy should be persued by the Leafs, but I doub any of them will come!

  27. gmg316 says:

Has anyone herad rumors about Kariya going to Boston and Brian Berard going back to Boston?

  28. bujanx says:

  29. Giant_571 says:

I like the idea of Allison in blue & white… not so much Lindros but if the leafs can get him cheap then it’s ok…

Why has everyone forgotten about Schneider the guy had a really good time in TO when he played in the 90’s and still has connections to the city.

  30. Resmo112 says:

This is fun, everyone is signing everyone unfortunately there aren’t even wings rumors. except the stupid leetch rumor which won’t happen, even TORONTO has rumors now, but toronto always has rumors.

  31. wingerxxx says:

They tried playing Lindros on right wing in New York. I watched him in nearly every game that he was on RW…he’s just not the same player. Lindros has to play at center to be effective…but by doing that he’s more prone to getting hurt. I like Lindros, but it’s a lose-lose situation with him, in the long run.

  32. raine_kalisz says:

Palffy already signed with the Kings.

  33. raine_kalisz says:

Why does everyone always dump on Poni? I really like him. He played well last year.

  34. CBA says:

    Whoa…just calm down…

  35. 92-93 says:

speaking as a Leafs fan, this is a really uncertain time right now. but i must say that for the first time in many years, i feel really good about this organization. that feeling of course is tempered by the fact that the only reason why JFJ is being responsible with who he signs is because he HAS to under a capped NHL.

but it’s time to say goodbye to certain players, hello to others, and, for once, the leafs are THINKING ABOUT THE FUTURE and what might happen next year. what a novel idea!

  36. 92-93 says:

    Ed Belfour ($5.6 million)

    Corey Schwab ($750,000)

Goodbye: Mikael Tellqvist via trade for picks($450,000)

Bryan McCabe ($3.5 million) Ken Klee ($1.9 million)

Tomas Kaberle ($2.28 million) Rafalski ($2 million)

    Pilar ($450,000), Carlo Colliacovo ($859,000)

    Marchment ($450,000) as the 7th D-guy

Goodbye: Aki Berg via trade for picks ($1.1 million)

    Left Wing:

    Ponikarovsky ($450,000), Tucker ($1.6 million), Samuelsson ($500,000), Kilger ($475,000), Wilm ($450,000)

Center: Sundin (making $6.8 million, but accounting for $6.3 million under the salary cap), Allison ($1.5 million), Stajan ($805,000), Steen OR Wellwood ($450,000), Druken ($450,000)

    Right Wing:

    O’Neill ($1.5 million), Palffy ($4 million), Domi ($1 million), Perrott ($450,000)

Goodbye: Belak via trade for a draft pick ($798,000), Antropov (to Russia – $1 million)

Total for this 23-man roster: $37.7 million – close to the cap, I know, but what choice do they have? they don’t have enough good players in the AHL to bring up since they are just beginning to rebuild their farm system.

  37. Leafs88 says:
