Agreed that all are over paid except Kaberle. Please excuse any minor errors as it its friday night and i just got in, drunk. I like Kronvall a lot, White I think is amazing. And as far as Kubina compared to McKee and Mitchell, is the price really that different?hardly, and the leafs gota more skilled guy. Mitchell is a way more overpaid player than Kubina. Although I agree McKee is a wicked hockey player. I'd still rather have Kubina over McKee because hes the more skilled player and Kubina is overlooked for his defensive ability. More comments to come when I sober up.

yeah i've agreed to disagree with a lot of people about Gill in the past couple of weeks. I think with the top 3 that the leafs have (all except Kaberle are overpaid but i digress) - Kubina-McCabe-Kaberle - there is room for one of the young D-guys to pick up big time minutes beside Kubina (my choices are white or Colicacovo). one of these guys are bound to fufill that role. White should be getting that chance now and i dont think he is doing that bad.

for the third tier spots on D, i think guys like Kronvall, Bell and to a lesser extent Woz and Harrison are ready for those spots now. so you have an overpaid top-3 at 15 million and a near-league-minimum (about 1.5-2.5 million), younger bottom-3 on D. the top 3 are entering their prime the bottom 3 are learning their craft and the D should cost about 17-18 million. that sounds good to me.

do i think Mitchell or McKee would make a better and cheaper fit than Kubina - no question. but what is done is done. I think the leafs are stuck with Gill for awhile and that has to be accepted. all i can hope for is that he keeps Belak out of the D-corps, remains on the 3rd tier and is paired up with someone who is speedier which was all being done before the injuries. is that worth 2.1 million of cap space or half of that? no.

my main focus for this year is the kids - the Williams, Suglobovs, Steens, Stajans, Coliacovos, Whites, etc. the other focus is keeping an eye on who should be elminated from the leafs roster via trade or just letting them go and right now that list includes Gill, Telly or Aubin, Antropov (simply as a tradeable asset), Belak and maybe O'Neill. Combined - that's nearly 6 million of cap space that can be shipped out. finally, the third focus for me this year is the possibility of a wholesale change by this year's trade deadline (trading Sundin, Tucker, Kubina, Peca, etc.), which i dont think is necessary but you never know by the deadline.

Mind you, with Wozniewski its like you said about just needing some seasoning, and the same could probably be true about Harrison.

there is absolutely nothing personal in my feelings towards Gill. its purely a hockey opinion. if you dont like it fine. if you think its indicative of me not being a smart hockey fan - thats fine too.

for the price and skill, Dempsey is way better than Gill. So is Kronvall and a lot of the leaf kids. the only difference is that they need some seasoning in the NHL whereas Gill already has that. but just like Berg, Khavanov and others, they have worn out their welcome for me. Give the kids a chance and keep the cap space open. especially in the cap era, its no longer the case of blindly cheering for kids getting called up because they are underdogs ..... they are also CHEAP underdogs and effective ones at that. the fact that you can admit to the 2.1 million but then qualify that with 'but you have to for free agents' does NOT make the signing any more reasonable. Even Kubina i can grudgingly admit that 5 million is too much but somewhat necessary. But Gill - no way!

He breaks up so many plays though, he's a rock back there. I already liked the guy, but now I'm think hes amazing after watching the New Jersey game. Although his penalty was unneccessary, I do like the fact that he is an intimidating presence back there, and he's a wall whenever there are 3 on 2's coming against the leafs. I hope a seemingly smart hockey fan such as yourself can put your personal feelings aside and acknowledge the good things he does back there, because they by far outweigh his lack of speed. I just can't believe you liked Nathan Dempsey so much, when he was one of the worst defensman on odd man rushes the leafs ever had. He was over rated because leaf fans love to cheer for the under dog, and we loved when he got a call up. Just like everyone used to love when Ponikarovsky used to get the odd call up, but when he became a regular everyone realized he wasn't that special. Hal Gill never gets caught out of position and occasionally gets beat wide. Is he overpaid, is he really worth 2.1? No he's not, but you have to overpay for free agents. Judging what other guys are getting I would have certainly paid between 1.5 and 2 million for his services.

Gill has been great through 4 games, nobody beats him, he never gets caught, he breaks up plays all the time. Just a great overall, solid, defensive defensman. And about Jay Harrison, I'll give him another chance because I did like him last year. Nordiques is probably right that he was just rusty with being off for so long. But 92-93, please don't try and tell me that he's better than Hal Gill because you're slowly going from one of the peoples whos opinion I respect the most on this site to just another crazy fan.
