Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

A quiet deadline day for the Habs?

Canadiens blankdanbrave writes "It's looking more and more like this Thursday, March 9, the NHL's trade deadline, will be a lot quieter than it usually is. While many fringe teams are still deciding if they are buyers or sellers, it's pretty clear for Bob Gainey and his staff that the Canadiens are buyers. But does Gainey want to disrupt the chemistry of his team, who have gotten at least a point in each of their last 9 games going into tonight's dance with the Leafs? Does he have to offer what other teams will want in exchange for what the Habs need? Is it worth giving up some good prospects for an iffy playoff run?

Here is an assessment of some of the most frequently mentioned names that could potentially be headed to Montreal, in order of probability. The Canadiens need size, depth and experience on defence...
  • Sean Hill: An experienced, rugged, hard-hitting defenseman who was originally drafted by the Canadiens. Would likely fetch a mid-round draft pick and maybe a low-calibre roster player.
  • Denis Gauthier: Slightly younger, similar numbers to Hill. His age might enable Coyotes GM Mike Barnett to ask for slightly more.
  • Derek Morris: Even younger than Gauthier, Morris is slightly more offensive-minded, but do the Canadiens need another defenseman whose plus-minus is not where it should be?
  • Eric Weinrich: Old, so the Blues would have to ask for very little for this to happen. He's familiar to Montreal, though, and would be just what the Habs need on D if he came at the right price.
  • Brendan Witt: Perfect fit for the Habs, but he will be attracting a lot of attention on the market, and the Canadiens don't have the buying power to outbid other teams.
  • Chris Chelios: Former Habs captain who played with Carbonneau. Would be great for him to finish his career in Montreal, but if the Wings want more than Mathieu Dandenault in exchange, forget it.
  • Sergei Gonchar: Pretty big defensive liability, but his scoring numbers are high for a defenseman.
  • Bryan Berard: Awful +/-. That's all there is to say.
...and size and scoring up front:
  • Tyler Arnason: The likelihood Arnason gets traded is high, but does Chicago want to take a chance on Mike Ribeiro?
  • John LeClair: Old, but can still be a valuable asset for a playoff run. Really depends on what the Penguins ask for in return.
  • Mark Recchi: Same as LeClair, although he's rumoured to have been a disruption in the locker room this year. Do the Canadiens need more of that?
  • Matthew Barnaby: Would provide some grit and the occasional goal. Don't rule him out.
  • Mark Bell: Just what the Canadiens need - a big, scoring forward. Trading for Bell would mean giving up a top prospect such as Plekanec or Kostitsyn, but it might be worth it.
  • Todd Bertuzzi: Acquiring him would be more of a distraction than Recchi, Ribeiro, and Madonna's wardrobe malfunction combined. No way, Souray.
  • Keith Tkachuk: Won't waive his no-trade clause.
  • Brad Richards: Lightning GM met with his team to inform them Richards wouldn't be traded. Forget all those crazy Theodore-for-Richards rumours.
The Canadiens have also been rumoured to be interested in Rangers backup Kevin Weekes, but with Cristobal Huet and Yann Danis manning the nets, I wouldn't put much credence into a goalie rumour involving the Habs. Also, don't expect Michael Ryder to be included in any possible deals. If the Habs are to pull off a trade, the likes of Mike Ribeiro, Richard Zednik, Mathieu Dandenault, Sheldon Souray (unlikely) and maybe one of Tomas Plekanec, Alexander Perezhogin, or Andrei Kostitsyn would be sent the other way. Before all you posters go crazy and rip this list to shreds, just a disclaimer: this is a list of names that have popped up all over the place in Canadiens rumours. Most of them are highly unlikely, but Bob Gainey has been known to pull a wildcard from up his sleeve in the past (see: Alex Kovalev). Don't put it past him to make a significant deal, but, at the same time, don't expect too much."

Any team that makes the playoffs can get hot and challenge for the stanley cup. The 16th seed today is alot stronger than the 16th seed back in 1989. I do not think that Montreal will make a big trade. Just bring in a good citizen like Mark Recchi. I think Mark Recchi is the perfect player to be traded. His contract does not need to be picked up by his new team next year. He is a leader on and off the ice. He is a winner. I think he could put the right team over the edge. Montreal has a good of a chance at the Stanley Cup as any other team. Ottawa, Philly, Tampa, All had their troubles this year. Now I am just rambling but watch out for Buffalo.....

Are you kidding here ???

Weinrich ain't going to happend , too old , they got rid of him because of it.

Witt: too expensive, would cost Ryder and Habs dont want him to go.

Chelios: dont think so, he got out of Mtl kinda the same way as Roy.

Gonchar: Why would we want him, we already have Markov and he's too expensive.

Recchi: too old.

Bertuzzi: forget it he ain't going anywhere

Tkachuk: same thing ain,t going anywhere

Brad Richards: Staying put in Tampa

but for the others you mention could be a possibility Bell yes but Arnarson the price was too high before Christmas , imagine now .

Berard's horrible plus/minus is really a reflection of playing in a subpar defensive system in Columbus, as well as being paired with Duvie Westcott...not the most reliable guy in his own end. Berard would fit in very well with a team that doesn't have to rely on him to be the top defenseman on the club. He is still an elite offensive defenseman. The question is, does Montreal really need that.

I don't think the Rangers will part with Weekes. They need him as an experienced backup to Lundqvist for their own playoff run. Acquiring LeClair would be a waste of resources. Very doubtful Chelios will be traded. The Wings are good to go. Gauthier might have similar numbers to Hill, but is a very different defenseman. He's a backend cruncher, not someone that can eat up a lot of minutes. But guys like him are very valuable in the playoffs...and the Coyotes know that. Montreal, being in a dogfight for a playoff spot, definitely should not trade younger players or picks for guys that just going to be rentals...but if it's a lower round draft pick, they should do it. Weinrich would be a help to any team. Very smart defenseman. They would be foolish to pick up Gonchar with that huge contract he has. Montreal already has a big shot on the power play in Souray...that's almost all Gonchar brings to the table nowadays. If it were me, I'd play it safe out of all those guys and try for Weinrich or Gauthier.

Good resume of what's been going around in the last weeks.

Anyone of Gauthier, Morris or Mara could be on the move and they could all help the Habs.

Could Zednik alone be enough to land one of those free agents?

The problem I have with Gauthier is this : If Gainey liked him, why didn't he land him last summer ?

Although I haven't seen him play a lot, I heard the guy is quite physical but it seems he coughs up the puck a lot in his own end, which at this point the Habs have to steer clear from as much as possible.

I need some perspective here. From 1972-1992 the Habs finished first or second in their division all but twice. Since then they have never finished better than third place in their division.

This team has been mediocre in the regular season for far too long. The idea that this team is deserving of some kind of rent a player so that they can win a few playoff games is laughable. This team needs to acheive some meaningful regular season goals before pinning everyone's hopes on a streaky goalie.

It's time to admit that the organization from top to bottom, management and players are unable to produce above average results. Forget about trading for some over the (sean) hill defenseman. This team needs to spray weed killer on the infestation that is the entire Habs organization.

The team has no coherent strategy, players do not know their roles, line combinations change far too frequently, few rookies are given the ice time they need to develop. More to the point, a team can't win by having an overabundance of average underachievers, it takes a core group of talented and dedicated overacheivers to raise the entire team's level of play. As I've said before, Montreal is a team of third line players.

My suggestion - kill this season. It's a joke anyway, until Carbo takes over next year. The team can sneak into the playoffs even if they dump all the deadwood. Heck, they lost their MVP player and started doing better.

The goal for the balance of the season should be to develop a consistent scoring line that can remain intact for two-three years.

You are an absolute idiot if you believe for one minute that the Detroit Red Wings are considering trading Chris Chelios. There have NEVER been any rumours of Chelios going anywhere - and especially not to Montreal.

He is a large part of the reason for the Detroit Red Wings' success. Don't think so? Just check out how many minutes he still averages per game.

If you are going to make up rumours hoping that they will come true, at least ground them in some kind of reality.

If I'm Bob Gainey, here are my priorities...

First of all, I'm trying to get an offensive defenseman who can help Andrei Markov offensively. Right now, he's pretty much the only defenseman in Montreal who can provide some offense, and he needs backup, preferably on the right side. It could cost a lot since there's a lot of teams looking for that kind of defenseman right now, especially a right-handed one. But here's a few possibilities;

  • Sergei Zubov - Dallas Stars
I don't know what his status his in Dallas, but Zubov is one of the best right-handed offensive defenseman in the league. However, I'm not sure I'm ready to sacrifice a lot for him...he's good, but he's also 35-years old. Still, 54 points in 59 games, and a +20 rating...that's enough to be mentioned.

  • Marek Zidlicky - Nashville Predators
Once again, I have no idea if he's available or not right now. But Zidlicky's numbers are what the Canadiens need; 41 points in 57 games, and a +5 rating. 12 goals...10 of them on the Power Play.

  • Derek Morris - Phoenix Coyotes
Probably the most available of them. Morris is a proven defenseman who can provide some offense, but also play solid defense. He used to be one of my favorite defenseman when he was in Calgary. Had to deal with injuries this season tough...

  • Dan Boyle - Tampa Bay Lightning
It would be pretty surprising to see the Lightning trading Dan Boyle, a key ingredient in Tampa Bay, especially to a conference rival, but he's just the type of defenseman the Canadiens need. 40 points in 61 games, and a -5 rating.

  • Pavel Kubina - Tampa Bay Lightning
Again, almost impossible...At only 28-years old, it's pretty doubtful that the Lightning would be ready to trade the 6'4 right-handed defenseman to the Montreal Canadiens, or anywhere else for that matter. But wouldn't he be a great fit with Andrei Markov ?
  • With Andrei Markov and Sheldon Souray in the lineup, I think the Canadiens should look on the right side first for an offensive defenseman. However, I think the names of Jordan Leopold and Denis Gauthier are worth mentioning. The first one because he's young, and can produce offensively with decent ice time, and the other one...well...because he would quickly become a fan favorite. And of course, if they become sellers before the trade deadline, you have to take a look at Jay Bouwmeester of the Florida Panthers.

    If we can get that offensive defenseman, then priority number one becomes a big offensive forward, again, preferably right-handed. It would be even better to get two; a winger and a center. I know Gainey and Carbonneau are high on Plekanec, and see him as the future second center, but I'd rather keep him on the third line for now. This would probably mean the end for Mike Ribeiro. Interesting players for the Canadiens, in my opinion, are;

  • Jason Arnott - Dallas Stars
He'll be an unrestricted free agent after the season, so maybe the Canadiens should wait then. I doubt the Stars would trade him before anyway. But at 6'4, 200 pds...I think chances are Bob Gainey's gonna look his way this summer.

  • Viktor Kozlov - New Jersey Devils
The last time the Canadiens played the Devils, I noticed he was playing on the fourth line. If that's still the case, maybe the Devils wouldn't mind getting rid of him. However, the Devils are playing in the same conference as the Habs, which would make this trade almost impossible. But Kozlov is, at least on paper, what the Canadiens need. He can play both, center or wing, and he's 6'5, 235 pds. He's right-handed, and eventough he only scored 12 goals and 25 points in 60 games this season, I think he could be a great fit with Kovalev and Koivu.

  • Oleg Kvasha - New York Islanders
Depending on what the Isles would ask in return, Kvasha could be a relatively cheap solution u

any chance Gainey pulls a Kovalev type trade on Samsonov?

wouldn't cost too much because of his history of injuries (just like when we got kovi)... but would be a good playoff rental...
plus we could sign him cheap this summer if he enjoys playing with Kovi.

of course he's far from being the big guy everyone's dreaming about, but he can sure put the puck in the net...

    Samsonov-Ribeiro-Kovalev anyone?
