Luc Bourdon killed in motorcycle crash

tragic news for the Vancouver Canucks organization and it’s fans today as they learned that their top prospect defensemen, Luc Bourdon, has been killed in a motorcycle accident.

He was 21 and was expected to crack the lineup next season.

all our thoughts goes to Bourdon’s friends and family.

Shootout Points Change Playoff Scenarios

Since the shootout has come into the NHL, the number of three point games has greatly increased. Instead of the occasional overtime win or overtime loss, mixed in with a lot of ties, we now always have a winner, meaning every overtime game is worth three points. I am not a fan of the shootouts. I don’t think it makes sense to have something in the regular season that you don’t in the postseason. And yes, the same would hold true for ties, but ties are not an entirely new aspect to the game like a shootout is.

Playoffs Predictions

Here are my predictions for who will round out which order to go to the playoffs, and the playoff predictions itself. I tried to use as much insight as possible, and accompanied a rating of each teams three departments (Offence, Defence, and Goaltending) based on this years perfomance and the latest performance. I also invented the GSP (Grade System Points) to make a prediction at who will win the Cup. Please refer to the Legend if need clarification. My own predictions follow.
Regular Season Standings:

Possible trades as the ping pong ball drops

As the days continue, and the Los Angeles Kings continue to lose, it is fair for one to beleive that they will land the first overall pick.

If you watch TSN enough, and see all the constant reminders, Steven Stamkos is the shoe in to go number one. So if Los Angeles selects him, they have a future team leader which is great for the a young and blossoming team, but they are also faced with a major problem, five centres who all have the possibility of being on the teams top line.

Deals that fell through

According to newspaper La Presse (citing the Toronto Sun), Mats Sundin refused to agree on a deal that would’ve sent him to Montreal at the Trade Deadline.

Still according to the Montreal newspaper, Bob Gainey was offering forward Chris Higgins along with 3 draft choices (1st, 2nd, 3rd) in next year’s draft.

The Love Guru Trailer!

Here’s the link for the new trailer for Mike Myers new movie “The Love Guru” (featuring the Toronto Maple Leafs): http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/02/28/mike-myers-the-love-guru-trailer-has-arrived/

The movie hasn’t been getting very good reviews, but to be honest, I’m still gunna catch it in theatres opening day. It stars Myers, Verne Troyer, Jessica Alba, and Justin Timberlake. Myers plays a “Love Guru” who is hired by the Leafs to get their star player to get back with his wife before the Stanley Cup finals.

Any thoughts about the movie?

Mattias Ohlund and Martin Havlat both done for the season

The Best Goalie No One Talks About

I will give credit where credit is due, Roberto Luongo and Martin Brodeur still rule supreme in the crease kingdom. However the situation gets a little murky after those two. There is some mention of Henrik Lundqvist, Mikka Kiprusoff and Evgeny Nabokov, but the best goalie nobody talks about is…. Marty Turco

Pronger stomp ruled to be clean

Chris Pronger’s skate stomp to the ankle of Ryan Kesler was ruled to be a non-suspendable offence by the NHL today.

Really this article should be called:

“League: Stomping okay when done by Anaheim”

HOSSA's a PEN?!? (SEEMS TO BE FOR REAL NOW!)

TSN reports that Marian Hossa + Pascal Dupuis are traded to the Penguins for Erik Christensen, Colby Armstrong, and Angelo Esposito, and a 1st rounder.

hat tip to Sportsnet who had that scoop 15 minutes before anyone else.

d-man trade?

According to Andy Strickland, Bryce Salvador would be headed to New Jersey for Vitaly Vishnevski….

not confirmed yet.
more to come

BRAD RICHARDS headed to DALLAS?!?

According to Bob Perno who was on the air at CKAC radio, Brad Richards has been traded to Dallas and the trade should be announced around 1pm today.

rumored deal would be for Mike Smith, Jeff Halpern and Mark Fristic

more to come.

Comrie back on the Island

According to TSN, Mike Comrie has signed a 1year, 4M$ contract to remain an Islander.

Hossa getting closer to Montreal?!?

According to Mathias Brunet of Montreal newspaper La Presse (who is usually VERY reliable), the Habs organization have ordered red & white Canadiens equipment for star player Marian Hossa.

Quick rumors: Sundin to waive NTC, Detroit to make huge splash

Plus trade talk involving Ottawa, Colorado, Anaheim, NJ, Chicago, NYI

Mats Sundin may be thinking twice about his refusal to waive his no trade clause with the Maple Leafs, and the Detroit Red Wings might be the team that gives him incentive to do so.
