Beer Edition: It's #11 All Over in Manhattan, Media Plays GM, New CBA Issues, Pe

Welcome to Challenging Mikster Beer Edition. Some good beer talk is needed on HockeyTradeRumors.com.

It’s Mark Messier night in the Big Apple….. but are Rangers fans really glad to see #11 hanging from the ceiling in the world’s most famous arena?

The media once again thinks it can play general manager….. that’s a no-no for me.

The Penguins soap opera continues. Before getting into the listed topics, I want to make a clarification on my previous CM article.

No way that I meant that article to be about politics, but some people managed to take it as politics. All I did was raise a series of questions. I felt that there was no need for members to post lengthy comments about politics since there was no talk of politics involved, but of an issue.

You could send me a PM if you want to talk politics, and I will be okay with that. In fact, I’d like to thank HTR.com member 92-93 who shared some interesting opinions via PM about issues.

If you’d like to read some world news that I have commented on, you could visit http://mikstersworld.blogspot.com/. It’s very outdated, but I will begin updating it this weekend and any comments you could e-mail me or send me a PM.

Anyway, let’s talk about… BEER!

I got to read an interesting article regarding the decline of beer sales in the USA. That’s odd, because Americans tend to prefer beer over any others. However, the young generation is exploring more into the world of liquors. Wine is getting more popular as Americans have taken furhter interest in Italian, Chilean, Spanish, and Australian wines…. and pushed the French wine further aside. The vodka industry has gained a lot of interest too. So in the end, beer is getting quite a hit here.

But why is that? One person in that article said part of the reason is advertisement. And I agree with that. Beer was advertised with the partying…and same old partying everytime with the hot chicks and so on. People got tired of it, frankly so did I. I enjoy beer…I love tasting beer from different parts of the world. I actually choose what kind of beer I should drink depending what I am eating.

Beer deserves to be appreciated, not misused.

The good news is that craft beer has grown. It still is a small part of the market share, but people are starting to look into these microbrewers.

I am not a fan of commercial beer. So Coors, Budweiser, Miller…….not my options. I used to like Molson, prefer Labbat sometimes, but I rather go with the microbrewers.

Of course, my favorite beer comes from Belgium. I believe they are the best in the world. My favorite label has a bad name to it, but it tops my list. It’s called Lucifer. A one liter bottle with a cork in it. It has rich taste and very smooth.

Other Belgian beers that are good are Duvel, Val-Dieu, Mareszdous, and Hoegarden. All are white style Belgian beers. Of course there is Stella Artois, but that is more of a commercial beer.

Belgian whites have become very popular in the USA as well. Rogue brewery makes Belgian whites. There is one from Rogue that comes in a nice ceramic bottle, but I did not like the taste of it much. Allagash Brewering from Portland Maine is very good.

Away from Belgian styles, I like one called Steel Reserve, but only one of its beer product is good. The Steel Reserve 211 in a 4 tall can pack. It’s simple lager beer, goes down smoothly and it is quite heavy on the alcohol, 8%. This one is from Texas.

Another good American beer is Shipyard Brewery. They actually have a good selection of different styles. A common kind is the Export, but the better one is Old Thumper. I really liked the Old Thumper, it has a hog on the label…. really good beer.

Then, of course, there is Guinness Draught. I prefer the bottle over the tall can, of course…. and the best beer comes in bottles, and the best way to drink the real taste of any beer is to pour it in a tall glass. Sure drinking from the bottle is handy, but all the real taste in the bottle is sitting at the bottom. If anything, gently tip the bottle upside down before opening it so it all mixes up again. Anyway, the Guinness Draught comes with the magic widget inside. Still not the same when straightly poured from a bar, but it’s still gooooood.

An English beer I really enjoy, which is similar to Guinness’s consistency, is called Boddington. It’s an ale that also uses the widget and it is quite beautiful to watch when poured in a glass. It’s not strong in alcohol, which I like because you get to enjoy more.

So… this is the CM Beer Edition. Though I would talk about my favorite Italian beer, I won’t reveal it until the Olympics begin. Below, however, is the list of my favorite beers.

Lucifer
Singha
Hoegarden
Allagash
Grolsch
Tuborg
Duvel
Val Dieu
Boddington
Steel Reserve 211
Spaten

And cheers to all!

It’s Mark Messier night in the Big Apple and the celebration began yesterday with a conference… a very emotional one at that. Today MSG Network ran a series of games, I believe all of the games in the Stanley Cup Finals back in 1994. Last game to watch is Messier’s last game back in March of 2004 where he scored a beautiful backhand against the Buffalo Sabres. Later on, MSG Network continues the coverage and anyone that has the Center Ice Package can watch MSG Network from I think 6 pm or 6,30 pm and then on with the game.

I know Messier has gone quite downhill ever since he left the Rangers and went on to join the Vancouver Canucks, but so many of us have witnessed this legendary player make history. When will we ever see a captain tell the newspapers that his team will win Game 6 and he ends up scoring a hat trick? When? I remember that moment, and every time I get to watch it over and over again it really touches the passion that I have for the Rangers. Mark Messier is a legendary player, he was idolized by so many young players who started to play mean, aggressive, but with skill.

He proved himself in all levels in the NHL. When the Great One left the great Edmonton Oilers, Mark Messier still managed to lead his team to another Cup victory. He broke records, he made history happen when leading a team that has not won a Cup in 54 years to victory. That was a team made up of classy players.

Though he disappointed many Rangers fans in the past few years, many Rangers fans get to smile when looking at a picture of Mark Messier holding Jason Blake’s jersey, the collar part, so tight that he was almost strangling the guy and Blake could not even move. Talk about massive strength.

He’s won the Cups, his points sit at #2 behind the Great Wayne Gretzky.

I admired Messier, and I still do. But it brings me great shame and sadness that some Rangers fans, and that’s too many, think that Mark Messier does not deserve to have his jersey retired as a New York Ranger. It’s all bitterness about the past few years and how some Rangers fans think that it’s really an “exclusive” club for old time Rangers to retire their jerseys. It’s really sad…. such a nice way to thank the guy for ending a 54 year drought that would have been…..66 years had he not been part of that team.

He made it happen though. And they call out Brad Park deserved it, Vic Hadfield who held the Rangers goal scoring record until Adam Graves broke it; and Vic even wore #11. What they fail to realize is that none of those players, no matter how great they were, never won a Stanley Cup, and yet they could have had Emile the Cat not done the Esposito trade.

I hope those Rangers fans got to watch the games shown today, and I hope they get to watch the moment when Messier held the Cup with such glory…. such glory that shall never leave any Rangers fan’s heart.

Mark Messier is a legendary player… and to have watched him play ever since 1994 has been an honor for me, as a die hard hockey fan, but even as a Ranger fan.

Thanks Mark Messier for the good years, and the bad years were tough…., but what stays in the heart are the glorious years.

So let’s head to the hockey media. You know, it’s bad enough that I came to hate the Toronto media back in the off-season where they basically said that the Leafs would sign any good players. Especially the radio…. good God, so horrible.

Once again, the media trys to think like a general manager. If Bruce Garrioch believe that all his trades would work for the Sens, then he would not be a journalist. The Matt Barnaby rumor? HELLO BRUCE ALNUTTY, Barnaby said, back in 2004, that he did not want to play for the Senators. Why would he now? Why would Muckler want someone like that in the first place?

The Quebec media seems to be pushing Bob Gainey to make a trade. It’s scary, the media is acting like the FBI….where they follow and stalk Gainey and his staff. But, I can’t complain too much. After all, it is the media’s job to discover information. But still….. Gainey will make a deal, we all know that. He may need time… he may need to watch more players…. the media should ease down on the speculation. Every move Gainey makes it’s suspicious.

“Hey hey hey! Jacques!…. Looook at Monsieur Gainey`! He….he… bought a box of cigars!”

“Oh oui oui oui Jean…..thees must mean thadt he will meet with….uuuuh….. Glen Sa`ther…. oui?”

Just kidding y’all French-Canadians. All in good fun. But seriously, the time will come and there is no reason to push push push and speculate (hey, exactly what pregnant women do!) what will happen. That is also a way to mislead Canadiens fans. If Gainey makes a trade that isn’t such a big deal…. then talk about a big fuss for nothing, eh?

Media must take this a few levels down. By the way, I give credit to Larry Brooks because he really wanted Petr Sykora to become a Ranger a while back and in the end, he got his wish!

All the sudden the Toronto media wants to see yet ANOTHER roster change made because McCabe is out. Well… it’s called an injury. Yes, a key player indeed… but so do many other teams deal with key injuries and they hang in there. Why would the Toronto media say that the Leafs MUST get a defenseman? Talk about zero confidence in the team, and why does Ferguson JR. have to make himself look like a jack ass and hit the panic button? Give the Leafs time, they can still win without McCabe and Carlo Colaiacovo is doing a heck of a job… I love how this guy hits… very active on the ice, that’s great.

You know…. this movie will come out….The March of the Penguins 2. The voice of the documentary will be from Demeres…and as he should be reading off a transcript… you pretty much will get to hear a bunch of mumbling words that sounds like French. Then you’ll see Mario Lemieux in a penguin costume…. I swear… this is all true…… I am nodding with my head… this is all true…. and the little penguin that keeps diving on the ice is the Sid Kid…… and…… everytime he is attacked he just goes and hides….between Mario’s….legs…. ……..

………….. yeah…….

And then they find a nice igloo up in Winnipeg where they both lock themselves in. Annnnnnnnnd, so the story goes, and I heard this on CBC as a small midget wearing a furry bikini was reporting about it, I’m telling ya…. it’s all true…… and so….. they find this igloo… where both Mario and the Sid Kid go in…. and….they go in this igloo because they miss home, their other igloo made of steel… and they are upset that people and fans criticize them. And so… they declare that they will never come out of the igloo’s closet….

This is when…..John Travolta, who…became a Canadian citizen, comes in and says “Mm..mmeh, Mhario….S..s…Sid…. it’s Jhean Trevulta….you gotta come oot of the iglooo oh muh God!”.

Meanwhile….. Michel Therrien lived a lenghty period of time in the ghettos of Pittsburgh, a full three days, and …. alright… how the bleeping hell am I making this up?

Anyway, so speaking of Michel Therrien who was supposed to be R Kelly in my little story (those who watch South Park will understand), he totally slams his team by saying that they should get paid 50% of their salaries.

What do you think of that?

I think, and yes that question was asked by myself to answer by……my….myself…., yeah…, and so I think he came out way too harsh on the team. He is the new coach, doesn’t necessarily know all the players, but those words were harsh.

But you know what? I support it. Harsh is good…hey, the truth hurts right? And I think that team should get paid half of its salary for how they play. This is what I had to go through with the New York Rangers. A bunch of vets that play if they feel like it, while making big bucks. This is what I exactly told Bruins and Penguins fans, that signing all of these guys will be a mistake. And so…a mistake it was.

This adds more problems to the Pens though. I can see the younger players responding well to that, but the older vets….. they may be demorilzied by it… they could become headcases in the locker room…. just a big mess. But, I stand by what Therrien said… this is a new coach and he made a statement. This guy is ambitious….and he won’t take such crap. He is setting a standard for Pengins Hockey, that this is now how it’s played. It’s a good message to GM Patrick that he made some bad aquisitions…and will be forced to make changes.

So, this is where it ends. I know it’s a long read, but enjoy it…. take your time with it. Look into the beers I listed that you do not know of.

Anyway, thanks to all and cheers!

Vice Administrator

…..and…. breaking news! Milbury has also joined Mario and Sid and he too says he will never come out of the igloo.

I don’t see whats wrong with the media. I know you don’t like how they throw names around without getting any sources out there or naming a source, but all journalism has sadly come to this. The thing that I find most hilarious is that these guys get paid big $$$ to do EXACTLY what all of us here at HTR do-that being talking hockey and comign up with hypothetical situations where a team might go in order to win the Cup.

To say Mess doesn’t deserve to have his number retired as a Ranger is flat out ridiculous. My question is, what has the guy not done to not have a night like this? Eat your heart out, Bernie Nicholas!!

And another thing about the whole beer rant…I’m use to drinkin Steel Reserve-40 style baby. Them and OE(god how awful), but thats how you gotta get done in the hood sometimes lol.

  2. robinson19 says:

Beer sales are probably down in the states because there’s not alot of selection among the commercial beers. At lest that’s how it seemed to me when I was down there for a while a year ago. Compared with here (Montreal) where any corner store sells pretty much any beer form anywhere in the world.

  3. Scruffy05 says:

I’m a Canadian beer fan… personally I love my lagers. If you want a world traveller’s lager, I recommend Harps from Ireland. Quite Hoppy.

I match beer to food too but I have to say, I can’t stand Cream Ale’s and I count Guinness as a meal in a can. Not saying it is bad I just usually save it until I’m already 3 sheets to the wind.

Recipes! These recipes work very well with Canadian (Has anybody else noticed Molson Canadian has tasted kinda…. salty lately?)

Steak: Nothing goes better with beer. My favorite hockey meal… Take the best steak you feel like buying and marinate in a can of beer for a couple hours (works well with Pepsi as well, but it makes the steak sweeter)…. anywho, marinate the steak for a couple hours, I usually marinate it through the Leafs game on HNIC, waiting for my Canucks game to come on second…. Take out, put a hefty amount of Montreal steak spice and peppercorns and cook medium rare. That is my entire dinner. A steak and a can or two of beer per period. -Insert Toolman grunt-

Beer BBQ Chicken… most people have probably heard of this but open a can of beer and stand up on the BBQ. Take a whole chicken and place over the can of beer. Cook until ready. The beer bubbles and steams and marinates the chicken from the inside out and ensures it is moist and juicy.

The chicken isn’t so much of a caveman meal though… I get Belle to make other stuff and have friends over for it (she’s a tiny little Vietnamese…. her and I ain’t finishing a whole chicken between us)…

EEEhhhh mikster!!!!! Great Article! I agree with all points that u made. The montreal media is really getting into the head of Therrien and the fans…even on this site night after night u see another montreal trade rumour. its gotta stop like just let him make the trade..let him do his job. Secondly, Im getting quite fed up with Crosby (and u can bash me all u like its my opinion). He thinks he can waltz in here accuse and insult all the veterans on the team(except for Mario of course) and saying its theuir fault for the losses. FYI Crosby their counting on u too!!! The “Next One” is getting to his head and he starts mouthing off on the ice to stars like Kovalchuk and Zherdev. Crosby, Kovalchuk is top in the league and Zherdev is playing better then u!!!Stop crying..and play the game. Latly, Therrien is doing a great job as coach..hes not standing for any crap…whata guy!!Theyll have a good shot next year with… however i did like Olczyk as well. Again, great article!!!!!

  5. Scruffy05 says:

actually… I spend a lot of time on buissiness in the states and I believe that the reason beer sales down there are so low is because American beer has this nasty tendancy of tasting like piss… don’t get me wrong, but I had trouble finding beer that didn’t taste like somebody secreted it… and I’m a beer conniseur. There was Canadian and European beers available, but they tended to have in big yellow “IMPORTED” on them, were in limited supply and were dumb expensive. American beer was cheap… I dunno, brewers subsidy? It was also barely worth what I paid for it. If Americans allow for a much bigger influx of REAL Canadian beer then people will start gravitating towards it again. If people start moving towards it, then natural patriotism will make them try and help theirs more… and maybe American breweries will get there head out of their asses and find out what beer should be.

  6. Gretzkin says:

    Ahh Delicious Topic Mikster.

Here in Canada, the people think that they have a stragle hold on beer, and often refer to the American counter parts as “Piss Water”.

The truth is, Canada’s Beer Market is obviously dominated by the major players, Molson & Labatts. The products that they put out could also be referred to as “Piss Water”. Canadian, Blue, Export, etc…

But in the past 10 years, or so, the Micro Brews have made a huge jump into the Market. There are some delicious beers being brewed up here in the Great White North.

Out west, in Calgary, there is a company called “Big Rock”.

They make a Traditional Ale (named Traditional ale, referred to as “Trad”, by the cool guys). Trad is DELICIOUS. Somewhat af a thicker ale, but not too thick.

And for the ladies, their Wheat Ale, named “Grasshopper” is also quite nice (just add lemon).

Here in Ontario there is a town called Creemore, where they brew a Beer called “Creemore Springs”. This is a beer brewed with no preservatives, so does not keep for too long. But when does a good beer need to keep for too long?

Anyhow, according to some. Creemore Springs is one of the only beers in North America that follows the rules of the Belgian Beer Act. Most of the”Piss Water” Beers in North America are not technically “Beer” (to the Nitpicky).

Also, I’d love to give HUGE props to a local Toronto Ale, called “Steam Whistle”. Brewed at the “Roundhouse”, which is about a 7 iron’s distance from the Air Canada Center.

I don’t know what it is about this Ale, but it is incredibly pure.

You can drink 9 or 10 of them on a work night, and not have any trace of a hangover. It’s fantastic.

They don’t advertise, but have expanded to Ottawa, and I’ve heard rumors that they will be taking it out to Calgary sometime soon.

Next time you are in Canada, do not pass on Steam Whistle.

My girlfriend hates it, so we’re stuck with Corona in the House, supplemented with the Guinness, or Kilkenny Cans.

    I also love Smithwicks…

    Slainte!!!!

    …………………

March of the Penguins 2: Classic! Comedic Gold, my friend.

    …………………

No problem with the Moose going into the rafters.

    I think he deserves it.

Some Teams have some weird rules about retiring Jerseys.

You can’t really wear any single digits in Boston.

In Toronto, you have to Die when you are on the Team to get your Jersey retired. Otherwise, they only Honour them.

Oh, and DEAR “THE MEDIA”, Just Report the News, don’t create it!.

    Nice Article!

  7. Scruffy05 says:

Big Rock is good, but I am a huge fan of the Eatern beers… What maritimers drink while they convince tourists to drink screech. Alexander Kieths is right up amongst my favorites and Moosehead, not only tastes good, but for some reason SERIOUSLY f***s you up…

  8. parrotheadta says:

Yeah, the main American beers suck. The only ones I’ve had worth buying are the Micholob specialty beers like Amber Bock and Heif Weissen. But the main beers are swill. There are a variety of good microbrews but you usually have to pay more for those. I don’t drink beer as often brecause the price for decent beer is too. It’s especially bad when I go to the Blues (insert you own punch line here) game and pay as much for a 20 oz cup of Amber Bock as I can buy a 6 pack in the store.

  9. parrotheadta says:

Hey, Mikster. Have you tried Chimay? It a strong ale brewed by Trappist monks in Belgium. Very smooth.

  10. Scruffy05 says:

Y’know… you’d probably drink a lot less beer and hance find it cheaper if you followed a different team…. like Kahzakstan….

  11. parrotheadta says:

The worst thing is I have a friend who’s a Blackhawks fan. A few years ago when they wer soooo bad I teased her to no end. Now, the Blues are even worse. They can’t draft. Those that they identify as can’t miss do. Those that are going to be great barely stay in the league. They will probably trade Weight for more of these can’t miss prospects or drsft choices that are no better than you big name American beers. Or they will get draft picks and piss them away as well. At least I no longer expect them to win which makes it easier when they stink up the joint. I’m hoping the drafting gets better with the guy who used to be in Ottawa on board but it will yake a few years to know.

  12. pensfanalltheway6687 says:

Ok I have two questions for you. Since when is Zherdev a star in this league? Don’t get me wrong he has phenominal talent, but he hasn’t displyed it to a level that he could be considered a star. Also, I saw Ilya taunting Crosby, not the other way around. And, Crosby is right for saying that it is the vets fault that they are losing. Hell, they have put it on his shoulders. I thought the whole point is for the vets to help develop Crosby. Instead they just sit back and expect the youngsters to do all the work like they are just there to supervise or something. Although I must say Ilya Kovalchuk is an excellent goal scorer. But, in my opinion, he should have gotten an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for taunting Crosby. And because I am on the subject of officialing, did anyone watch the Pens/Oilers gave on the 10th? That call on Michel Oulette was crapy. I sware the refs screw the Pens like every game that it is close with not a lot of time left.

P.S. Look at Crosby’s stats, NUMBER ONE ON HIS TEAM! That will tell you that theh vets aren’t stepping it up when an eighteen (or nineteen) year old kid is the leading scorer of a team that has players such as Recchi, Leclair, Palffy, and Gonchar.

  13. 92-93 says:

thanks for the mention in the article …

and i just like to say that its way easier to talk about politics over BEER then it is online. in my opinion, there needs to be more talk about politics and beer in every domain of life.

the leafs do need some depth but not just because McCabe is out of action. JFJ would be smart to take his time and look for a good trade and if it doesn’t work – then wait until the offseason. remember, according to many non-leaf fans, this season is a ‘write-off’ for the Maple Leafs right?

  14. kicksave856 says:

i’m somehow onto gin and tonics now, but my beer of choice is/was boddingtons. i was wondering if it was going to get mentioned.

  15. kicksave856 says:

i understand your points on Crosby, but as a casual bystander, and a fan of another team with no rooting interest, let me tell you, Crosby is a bit of a whiny little baby. i wanted to like him. i didn’t really know anything about his personality, and i’d only seen him play a small handfull of times before he turned pro. obviously, i knew his numbers. everyone knew his numbers. so all the hype came and then the draft came, and i really was looking forward to this new star. i wanted to like him. i really did. then i saw him get on the ice and whine and complain, and yap at established players in this league – and i have to admit that he’s made me despise him. i HATE the kid. he’s turned a guy who just likes hockey and wanted to root for him into a person who despises his attitude and would now rather see him fail. he’s like a talented Barnaby. unless you are a die-hard penguins fan, he just forces you to hate him.

anyway, that’s just how i feel.

  16. wingerxxx says:

Since tonight was a pretty warm night here in Maryland (shocking since it’s January), the hubby and I broke out a few bottles of Ayinger Bräu-Weisse. It’s a great Bavarian light beer. If you can find it at your liquor store, GET IT. If only to save it for the summer, because it’s great for grilling out. In college, my girls and I used to drink Natty Ice when we’d watch our sports on TV. What crap. I can’t handle the main market stuff anymore. I’d much rather pay a few bucks extra for something good, then get a nasty tasting beer for a couple bucks less.

I heard that the tix for tonight’s Rangers game are going through the roof. It’s a great game by the way tonight….:) It’s understandable seeing as how the messiah’s jersey is being retired tonight. The very first hockey game that I ever watched was the day after he predicted a win in the playoffs all those years ago. It’s the reason why he became my favorite player, and the Rangers have been and always will be my team. I’m recording tonight’s ceremony and game tonight, and both are looking to be worth it!

I love Labatt blue. I think its sad that when i go to my local bar, the bartender knows what i want. A mini pitcher of labatts and a Kamakazi shot. I did grow a taste for MGD while i was at my Buddys. They didnt carry Labatts. The popular thing there was Old Style beer. Talk about some shit there. The younger generation is all about liquor. me I only drink beer vodka, and captain. But lots of my friends are like rum and coke and shit like that.

    Anywaysmy two cents on beer

BTW Red Wings slaugtes the Flyers 6-3. wow!

  19. wingerxxx says:

    haha thanks gretz.

  20. Gretzkin says:

Agreed, my girlfriend is an East Coaster. I just went there over Christmas, for the first time. Beautiful.

I’m certain the you are from the Vancouver area, and I believe that B.C. is the nicest looking province, but there is such a thing of beauty about the East Coast. In an England sort of way. Anyways…

I’ve been drinking the Kieths for a whlie at home as well. They come in 8 packs, so you just get that much more.

Moosehead is nice, and yes, certainly f’s you up for your value.

Also, I drank the Screech and Kissed the Cod 5 years ago. I’ve got the Officia Certificate to prove it, so thank god I didn’t have to go through that again.

    Screech is disgusting!

The good thing about every province in Canada rather than ours (BC/Ontario), are that they are not dictated by Liquor Stores and “The BEER STORE”.

Is BC still stuck with that?

Ontarians, and BCers don’t get enought credit for having to strategically buy beer (and other liquors). You can’t get offsales, or buy it in any Variety Store.

    And you’ve got until 11:00pm.

    Very boring…

  21. leafs_r_a_joke says:

Best beer in the world right now has to be Steelback Bluethunder or maybe Lucky Honey Lager too tight to call.

  22. Gretzkin says:

Are those the ones from Hamilton, or, at least the Steelback?

    Worst Ads I’ve Ever Seen!

  23. TheRussianEvolution says:

I haven’t heard a single Rangers fan say they thought Messier didn’t deserve to have his number retired…

Maybe beer sales are down because it is a bitter awful beverage. I for one prefer root beer.

  24. Scruffy05 says:

Kelowna actually. Twice as beautiful of Vancouver, half the smog.

I have seen pictures of the maritimes and Belle and I are considering a vacation if work will give me a moments peace… The whole area looks gorgeous.

Dammit… now I want an official certificate.

Also, we are no longer totally stradled by the liquor stores, a small law was passed allowing beer and wine stores sell a limited amount of hard liquor… still nothing beats a good lager.

  25. Scruffy05 says:

    *points accusatorily* Root Beer?? HEATHEN!!!!!

then i guess we need more Molson Canadian ads in Quebec… national pride hasn’t been doing well here lately 🙁

Actually, a root bear float during the summer can be like heaven in a glass mug. Great treat to watch hockey in the winter with, by the way.

  34. Scruffy05 says:

Hey? You gonna blame me for being young, dumb and desperate!?!? I’ll have you know that…. oh, ok, you’re right:P

  35. gohabs73 says:

haha! yeah i usually go to the same bar for a few months until most bartenders recognize me and know what i want before i order… then i stop going there and find another place… 🙂

  36. Scruffy05 says:

You have the Jean the Baptiste bonfires…. light a fire, get drunk and blame all problems on Ottawa… you know, I think a holiday like that would REALLY catch on over here on the west coast:P

  37. Scruffy05 says:

What country/province? If you say Quebec you realize that the legal drinking age there is merely a suggestion…

  38. Scruffy05 says:

Don’t get me wrong, I love root beer. Belle likes the floats but I’m more of a purist:) It’s the only damn reason I EVER eat at A&W

  39. gohabs73 says:

wow people! where the hell do you live to have such a hard time getting a hold of normal alcohol?!

  40. gohabs73 says:

don’t you people from other provinces celebrate some sort of Provincial Day and get drunk around a fire too?? that’s kind of sad!

  41. Scruffy05 says:

    it’s called young/poor colleg kids and highschool…

now I’m looking at getting bar installed at my place (read: begging for permission)

  42. Scruffy05 says:

nah…. we have a BC day but there is no pomp and ceremony…. we just don’t go to work…

  43. 24_cups_and_counting says:

Steamwhistle? That is the most disgusting crap ever tasted! I’d rater drink my own urine!

  44. gohabs73 says:

actually i’m in college right now… and my budget allows beer before NyQuil, aftershave and deodorant sticks! oh… wait! upon further review, deodorant sticks come right before beer… 😉

  45. Marky2Fresh says:

If I was the PM, I’d change the drinking age to 50 and make 5,00 dollar fines for anyone caught drinking under that age, really just to piss people off.

  46. Scruffy05 says:

    and that’s why you’re not the PM…

    Hi,

I read your a belgian beer fan. Well I’m from Belgium and you’re spelling it all wrong!!!

It’s Maredsous and Hoegaarden. The first is a trappist beer (means it is brewed by monks in an abby) and the last is a white beer (it misses one process before becoming a normal beer).

BTW I’m a huge Stars fan and I play hockey in Belgium (a sport which is pretty underrated here, soccer is nr.1 together with cycling).

When I was in Africa (a long time ago), my friends there called Guiness «medication». They pretended that after a few beers(like 9-10), all you had to do was drink a Guiness and you were «cured» . A guy tried to show me and he was quickly cured , all the bad stuff was ejected from his stomach! Now about the Quebec Media…man how I can hate them!! They wanna run the team, especially the old hacks like Rejean Tremblay, Bertrand Raymond ,(criss un vieux sénile avec des souliers patofs, un gilet saumon pis une teinture peu subtile!) Sorry for the french part I could not put it into english words. They dont realize how much of a negative impact they are to the team. The thing is that they decide when they want a trade, keep pushing for a trade in the media and it just sends this message to the other teams in the league: the people want a trade right now in montreal so you can try to screw them, they are desperate!!!! The best trades dont result from desperation(Patrick Roy, anyone??). Plus, those stupid journalists mix politics and sports , they want a french captain, a french coach, a french gm etc… I even saw an interview between Yvon Pednault and Bob gainey at the begining of the season and the three first questions he asked were concerning the fact that the hamilton bulldogs coach wasn’t french ???!!!! WTF , who cares, its a freaking new season after a lockout , I want to know what the team will look like and not if the AHL coach speaks spanish or french or german!!!!! Its not a rant towards french people as you can easily tell, I am french myself but when I read the sports page its because I wanna learn about…sports…duh! If I wanna read about politics, I’ll read the politic section! Man How I can hate them….
