value-wise I don't think the deals are that bad, I don't know if Bouwmeester can fetch a low 1st at all unless the contract coming back is really bad though.

As for the deals themselves I doubt the Pens will take on yet another 7M cap hit on one contract like that, especially for that price. Maybe they would do Martin+52nd overall pick for Bouwmeester but with that cost Calgary would probably turn it down.

The Columbus deal isn't that bad but I don't think they will give up Brassard to take on Bouwmeester's contract unless Calgary is willing to send one of Karlsson, Irving or Ramo. Maybe something like Bouwmeester, Irving for Brassard, Methot, 45th overall pick would do it.

Tough call really, I could be very off on this but that is my take.

I've been reading some of your comments. Here's my take on Jay-Bo:

I think he's a really good defenceman, but definitely over payed at $6.68 million. Still, I think they could get something back for him.

Either

A) a decent draft pick (late first or a 2nd) + workman-like defenseman with some salary in the $3-5 million range, ideally on an expiring contract.

Example: To Pittsburgh for their 1st rounder and Zbynek Michalek (2 yrs $4 mil cap hit remaining). Calgary gets to add a prospect with the pick, and shave off close to $3 million in salary each of the next two seasons. Michalek, meanwhile faces similar criticisms in Pitty, and hasn't lived up to his contract. Could be a move that works for both sides.

B) Two players back and a late pick, ideally on expiring contracts who can all contribute. One of whom should have some kind of upside and potential.

Example:To Columbus for Derrick Brassard (2 years $3.2 mil) + Mark Methot (2 years $3 million) + 4th round pick.

Interesting. That might get it done if the Flames have decided that Backlund's progress may be stalled. I think this could be the year that defines Backlund's career. Hopefully a new coach will allow some creativity on the team.

Trade him! It's the best move. Trade an asset right before it starts to depreciate.

Kipper is a quick way to get some new assets to build around and gives the team some cap to work with (although it isn't a necessary need). Plus it finally changes the team's direction.

Bouwmeester is overpaid but he's not the player many make him out to be. He's a minute muncher and still a top line player, just not one that plays like the Weber's or Doughty's of the world. He's a low end top pairing guy but still a guy that can be depended on to play a solid role. He'd be incredibly hard to replace.

He may not be worth a top prospect, a first rounder and a roster player, but he's worth something of quality. Trading him has to make sense and trading him for a dump or a lowly pick doesn't make sense. I'm cool keeping him at this point.

nice starting point, but Stastny's value is waaaay higher than Bouwmeester. If I were COL and I wanted Bouwmeester, I would ask for Backlund+ to be added to the Stastny deal.

I do like the idea of Calgary going after Stastny, could be exactly what they need to make the playoffs.

Here's a suggestion for a trade:

Colorado needs help on defense and Calgary need to get younger on forwards plus a good playmaker for Iginla so:

To Calgary:Paul Stasny
To Colorado:Jay Bouwmeester

Roughly the same salary and around the same age so makes sense to me.

I like Ramo. I saw an interview where he explained the reason he went to the KHL was to play more games. He basically said for his development as a goalie he felt he needed to play 50+ games rather than 15 as a back up in the NHL. His KHL stats are strong and most scouting reports indicate he's better equipped for the NHL than before.

Irving not starting had more to do with the streak Danny was on than his play. For his games in the NHL only the Boston game stands out as a game he looked over his head and that had as much to do with the teams play. There were times that Irving looked great as well, that game against Vancouver was a fantastic goaltending display by a rookie.

Calling the two sieves is a bit strong. Unknowns or question marks, sure but I actually like what the Flames have assembled behind Kipper. Irving Ramo, Ortio and Brossoit form a solid potential for the future, they might not be ready yet but its not a bad group to have for the future. Goaltending is such a time intensive position to develop properly.
