Good trade for both teams. But wow Ottawa wikll be dangerous next year. A healthy Karlsson, a healthy Spezza, a healthy Michalek, a healthy Cowen, a healthy Anderson and now Bobby Ryan? Not to mention all their young players that should be even better next year. Who knows how good Turris will be.
Parros signing with Montreal is huge. Probably one of the best signing of the day.
I’m fine with the Bozak signing, 4.2m is a very fair cap hit for him. He was a big part of our penalty kill last year that ranked 3rd best in the league. He also brings a comfort level to the coach. If Kadri isn’t getting it going on the 1st line, we know Bozak can go there and the line will succeed, even if he doesn’t put up huge numbers, Kessel still will. I’d rather give Bozak 4.2m rather than Filppula 5m.
The Clarkson signing will help the team out a ton, for now. But 7 years is far too long. Not as bad as the Clowe signing, what are the Devils thinking? Investing 5 years with a guy who can barely skate and only had 3 goals?
I also like what Edmonton did today, brought in Gordon and Ference. They should have a good shot at making the playoffs now.
they need a major up grade in goal before the oilers can even think playoffs ,they are better today, but until they address there goaltending they won’t even come close to the playoffs.
Is Dubnyk that bad? His numbers look pretty good. .920 is a good save percentage. Seems like no Oilers fans believe he is good enough though. I don’t watch many Oilers games, so all I know about him are his stats.
he’s terrible and is so inconsisitant if he was that good the oilers wouldn’t be looking for his replacement(an upgrade0 and like i said gambo until the address that they will be shitty
I also didn’t watch much Oilers this year, I think Dubnyk is okay. He looked pretty good last year at the world championships for Canada. I think he’s like a Crawford, just a decent goalie who gets the job done, not a stud.
perfect comparison, Dubnyk is similar to Crawford. Good goalie, just need a good team in front of him.
Heck with a weak defensive team even goalies like Price or Luongo can miss the playoffs.
While I’m sure Edmonton would have loved to grab Bernier or Schneider they still have a decent goalie on their team.
The Leafs really only need 1 more 3rd line winger. Colborne is ready to play in the NHL, but there isn’t really a spot for him on the Leafs. Is he trade bait?
No…Not for a third-line winger? You nuts.
Toronto is better off looking within.
I think McClement should play on Bolland and Kulemin’s line as the shut down unit. This is the exact type of line Carlyle could use.
I think Colborne is the extra forward, as of right now he’s centring McLaren and Orr. Although, training camp sorts all this out.
Colbourne could be a guy they would package to get an upgrade on D. Top 6 seem set as they will go with Kadri to see if he can continue his development and be a real star scoring center.
Depending on the guy they go for I could see the Leafs moving any of Gunnarsson, Franson, Colbourne or Kulemin. For the right guy I think Rielly would be tradeable as well, I just don’t think there will be a D-man available that the leafs would pay that price for.
I wonder if NYR would consider moving one of their top tier defensive guys for a guy with more offensive punch? I mean I like Franson alot, but if we could put something with him and turn him into McDonagh or Staal, I would do that deal all day.
Everyone blew their load. The remaining UFA’s are not gonna get the big bucks.
We should be talking Hainsey and Gilbert. I hope we are. We know Nonis had interest in Scuderi, so he could be looking at these guys as secondary options.

Love it. Bernier got $5.8, so pretty damn close.
That is exactly what I hope happens. Good work killer, you and me, simpatico.
Eklund put G Steve Bernier…
Were going to have a fun team next year with G Steve Bernier and C Tyler Bozek..
Are they upgrades on the original?
Steve Bernier plays net now? Sweet. It’s like the 19-teens again when players could play both out and net.
Nonis re:defence “I don’t think our top 7 is where it needs to be, but looking around the league I think it holds up.”
We could be looking at adding a veteran into the mix… http://nhlkvasni.blogspot.ca/
Pretty fair and truthful comment from Nonis. Solid group that could use some improvement.
Wow what a day working away so got all the days events at once.
Skipping the rest of the news (Alfredsson? You going broke Melnyk?) and jumping to the Leafs.
Both contracts are bitter sweet. Obviously less than ideal contracts but we did get our guy.
The term on Clarkson scares me more than the money. Either way a great addition to the top 6/9.
As for Bozak. The more I think about the more I’m on board. Depends on the Bozak we see next year. He did bulk up a bit last year and wasn’t as flaky as in the past. The compete level better not drop with his first big payday.
Grabo I am actually dissapointed to see go. Most seem happy but I’m lukewarm. His comments regarding Carlyle might suggest it was the right time to move on. Or maybe it’s a passionate guy pissed off that he was forced out of Toronto where he wanted to play.
With Grabo gone, Kadri too inexperienced Bozak would need to be replaced. I don’t hate Bozak I’m fine with him staying. Prefer a year or two less term but overall seeing the crazy deals today seems reasonable.
The biggest thing is his contract is still reasonable as a second line center. 4.2 for an effective second line center that plays PK and wins face offs is ok. Let’s hope for some good production.
So is this what it looks like as of now?
Lupul(A) – Bozak – Kessel
JVR – Kadri – Clarkson(A)
Kulemin – Bolland – D’Amigo/Ashton
McClement – Colborne – Orr/McLaren
McClement will still get solid minutes up and down the lineup maybe a full time wing on the third line.
I don’t mind dressing both heavies but not for 82 games. Rotating the big boys and giving some time to the most deserving youngsters would be ideal.
Gunnarson – Phaneuf
Gardiner – Franson
Fraser – Liles
Brennan – Blacker
Liles seems like the odd man out at this point. Not really into crunching all the numbers but how tight are we? Does Liles need to be cap dumped this season?
I’d rather see him actually play next year for Toronto if they can afford he’s still effective and better than replacement level players.
Decent D that could show some nice internal growth. Another top 4 would take it to the next level, but I’m content.
I think that team would squeeze in under the cap no problem. You filled in the holes with Marlies. Then we could always add as the season goes on.
However, the San Jose Sharks have only 11 forwards signed, they’ll need at least 2 more. They have a full 8 D under contract, and only Niemi in goal, so they need a goalie. They’re currently over the cap.
I wonder if we could work out a deal to bring in Brent Burns or Dan Boyle, and dump Liles in a separate move, and squeeze it under the cap. Looking at Minnesota dumping Setogucchi for a 2nd to get under the cap, you figure the Sharks and Flyers will be in similar situations. There has to be an opportunity there to grab some talent for less than a regular trade market value.
Yea I think you might be right on SJ, I also mentioned Burns a couple of days ago and considering their cap situation and they can’t seem to find a regular spot for him on D, I think its possible.
Big, RH shot and skates very well. Mistake prone though is the problem.
I think they might take Liles back if we made it worth their while. It might have to be Liles, 2014 1st for Burns to get it done.
I think we need to remember that once we re-sign our RFAs we will likely be near the cap.
I don’t think we can take on $2M in salary without moving someone else with Liles (not both to SJ though obviously).
I agree, but adding Burns would possible negate re-signing and RFA and moving him instead, like Gunnar for example.
Gunner could move in a separate deal as well. He’d fetch a 2nd and decent prospect, or something. Some of the return for Gunner could be added with Liles in the Burns deal.
In this hypothetical our D could be:
Phaneuf – Burns
Gardiner – Franson
Fraser – Blacker
Brennan – Holzer
Good looking top 4, and cheap, young, diverse mix for the bottom 4.
For sure. As long as he had the deals in place and new he was getting Burns, you could move Gunnar. Another guy I think he might target(not sure if I like it) is Wideman, due to Calgary and it needing change. He is RH, good speed and can log lots of minutes with Dion.
Wideman is routinely good for like half a point a game or better every year. Very consistent offensive dman.
Of course he comes with that big contract, which is kind of a negative, but on the plus side it would probably lower his trade value.
