He was just starting to blossom as a star defenseman at age 23, then suddenly….No thanks to that friggin Marion Hossa.

I agree with the above comment, he was becoming more well rounded with Toronto.  Considering his eyesight, it's a minor miracle that he can play at all.  One thing that no one really talks about, is that he is the rare athlete who actually manned up to the fact that he used a performance enhancing drug, and took responsibility for it.  No half empty denials or anything like that.  I still wish he had never taken them, but I admire the fact that he took responsibility for what was going into his body.

Berard is still one of the better offensive defensemen in the league.  He was really in the wrong place at the wrong time with Columbus.  If he can be put in a situation where he doesn't have to play 25 minutes a night, and doesn't have to play against top lines, he could really do well.  He could be a very good 3-4 defenseman.  And Berard is not a slacker, that wasn't his issue in Columbus.  It's that he is just not a great defensive defenseman, which got him in trouble with Coach Hitch in Columbus.  Ted Nolan knows how to get the most out of his players, and Berard could be a fit.  He's a competitor, and hopefully he'll get his career back on track either with the Islanders or another team.
