Canucks Acquire LaBarbera from Kings

As per TSN:
“The Vancouver Canucks added some goaltending insurance Tuesday, acquiring Jason LaBarbera from the Los Angeles Kings for a seventh-round pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft.”

Jason is expected to take one Curtis Sanford’s job (holding the team together until Luongo returns) after Sanford sustained a groin injury Tuesday.

Jason “was deemed expendable with the improved play of Jonathan Quick, who recorded a pair of shutouts for Los Angeles last week.”

Many would have expected Jason to go for much more, considering he was being used as a starting goaltender by the Kings.

LaBarbera has struggled this season. Still, a pretty good move by Vancouver by adding some goaltending experience until Luongo gets back, while only giving up a 7th rounder.

He's struggled a bit this year, but he hasn't been too bad, and for a 7th round pick it's a great trade for the Canucks.

I wonder what they'll do with the guy when Sanford, and Luongo come back though. They could get him on the roster as the 3rd goalie, but I doubt it. The only team that really does that is Edmonton (I know they did for a while this season anyways). They could assign him to Manitoba, but Schneider was playing aweome in the AHL, and really besides two bad games in the NHL (against two good offenses in San Jose, and Colorado too) he's been pretty solid, so I highly doubt he's going to be spliting games with Schneider.

Could anyone see Sanford being traded if LaBarbera play well? Maybe someone will take him for a 4th, or 3rd rounder with his very solid play this season, just for an insurance backup for a team like Carolina, or Colorado. He might even be able to win over a starting job on either of those borderline playoff teams, so it would be worth it for a couple teams to get him.

Great addition by the Canucks considering they only gave up a 7th rounder… This gives them some solid depth between the pipes.

I got some ideas for 2009:

New rules to increase fighting. An unsportsmanlike penalty for avoiding a fight

    A lesbian hockey league

    An all-star game for enforcers

At least 1 hockey game per year played in Greenland and Antarctica

I gotta say that any questions surrounding Dave Nonis' ability to be a good GM has been squashed – he's done what I think is a fantastic job with the Canucks.

I always liked LaBarbera as a backup – and who knows what is going to happen when Lou and the Sandman come back – but this move makes me think that one of the two goalies are seriously injured a lot worse then what we know about.

Either way an absolute steal for the Canucks I think then again what do I know I'm no Dandope.

  6. Bure96 says:

Dave Nonnis isn't GM anymore, it's Mike Gillis now.

Dave Nonis got fired like 3 months ago.

  8. leafy says:

The idea of a lesbian hockey league could be a winner.  Men would probably follow that league more than the NHL.  Haha!

  9. GoLeafs13 says:

yes but if they're married it would b hard to keep it secret from the wife.

  10. FlamingHomer says:

I can only assume he was going to be waived so a 7th rounder was better than potentially, nothing, and Vancouver didn't want to take a chance he would still be there when their option to take him came up.

Jesus I knew when I wrote that down it was Gillis…I guess I am a dope!
