Carbo Says Habs Can Use Kaberle

Guy Carbonneau says the Canadiens need to make a deal, not at any price, but they need to acquire someone like Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle before the February 28th NHL trade deadline.

Carbonneau told “The Habs Show” on CJAD Sunday afternoon that, given the number of Habs defensemen who are hurt, they need more resources. Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges are both coming off knee surgeries while Hal Gill has missed the last two games with an upper-body injury.

Carbonneau believes the Canadiens are examining all their options but it doesn’t appear to the former Habs captain and head coach that the Habs have enough depth in Hamilton and he’d go after Kaberle.

Leafs general manager Brian Burke told “The Habs Show” on Saturday he’s had some talks with Habs G-M Pierre Gauthier and has no problem trading within his division, although he won’t trade a goalie or tough-guy to another team in the Northeast.

you're right. Schenn will be offered around 3-4 mill. and Macarthur will be offered around 2.5-3 mill. gunnarson will prob get 1 mill.

my take on the Versteeg trade is that it looks rushed like the Stempniak trade.

I think though, like how Carlo and Alex were very laissez faire with their work ethic and attitude, i have a feeling Versteeg was the same and that didn't sit with Wilson.

I think wilson really pushed for BB to move him sooner than later.

I dont think KV was happy with losing, but i think he was carrying a bit of the cup hangover. I dont feel he was the hardest worker and he couldnt find chemistry on any line, in any role.

I think Wilson was expecting more leadership from a recent cup winner but didnt get it. I dont think he liked the jovial and happy go lucky no care way it seemed KV acted and didn't want that no care attitude around. As usual with most players who just won, the hunger isn't there the next year. It comes back for the most part, but Wilson couldnt wait nor stand for that attitude.

I believe that was what prompted this quick deal the most. I think getting 2 picks back is solid, but not spectacular, nor did the return floor us like the beau deal which seemed like an overpayment on the Ducks part initially.

KV is a support guy, so we should be happy it landed a 1st.

People keep mentioning we only got 2 assets but gave up 3 for KV.

Keep in mind, Bill Sweatt was sent to Toronto. We didn't sign him though.

Essentially it was Stalberg and Paradis for KV, Sweatt for Didomenico. Its honestly not a major difference.

Seguin has been pretty underwhelming, I don't think the Kessel trade looks all that bad, at least not yet.

Not sure how that equates into "give Toronto what they want".

I agree with your assesment of the Versteeg/Wilson take. This tells me that for better or worse Wilson is our coach next year. I am not sure still how i feel about this trade. Burke says he is keeping the first, but looking to pedal the 3rd, time will tell.

  6. HABSSTAR says:

Do you think this is Burke deciding to rebuild through the draft now or just some general house cleaning and he'll try to use those picks he's collecting to land a player?

  7. toronto77 says:

    Hanson is completely garbage

  8. toronto77 says:

Horrible trade by Burke!!! Versteeg is a young player and an important part of the rebuild. We got a first rounder but if philly wins the cup it'll be a 30th overall, not that impressive as well as the third pick. Burke should have made a package deal that would have brought back JVR. Now that we got this let's say 20th-30th overall pick, now we have to wait another 3-5 years for this guy to develop when JVR even though is not playing that great now will probably be excellent in 1-2 seasons.

  9. dumbassdoorman says:

Ya, I think it is wishful thinking for us to hope there is something else. There isn't, KV's ice time went down as tghe season went on and rumour has it Wilson didn't like his happy go luck attitude. So this tells me we are stuck with Wilson.

Some are going to laugh at this comment and that's fine, but I think I could have lived with this trade had Carcillo came back with the the picks. Even if we would have had to throw Philly a 5th or even a 4th. Say what you want about him but he plays with a great edge and heart, something this team needs.

  11. lafleur10 says:

i believe this deal is a very good 1 for the leafs! i'd say they robbed the flyers, way philly gave up a 1st and 3rd pick for a 3rd liner! burke will now trade kaberle and get another 1st r.d pick then he'll have 2 of them which he'll use to trade down in the draft into the top 5 ……..eventhough his original pick the 1 boston owns will now for sure be a lottery pick likely a top 4!

  12. dumbassdoorman says:

LOL….that is some wishful thinking, I am a Leafs fan and even I don't see that having a chance at hapening.

  13. cam7777 says:

The assets we gave up to get Versteeg, are today, worth absolutely nothing.  Stalberg may not be in the NHL next season, or even by the end of this year.  DiDomenico is a complete dud (even though I love the kid), and Paradis is the definition of subpar.  So if you look at the trade that way, it's a home run.  That said, San Jose would not trade Thornton for a bag of pucks just because they acquired him for a bag of pucks.  Versteeg wasn't working in Toronto, but I feel Burke could have got more by being patient.

I think we'll have to wait and see if this deal was connected to anything before we fully evaluate it.

  14. cam7777 says:

There is talk on Twitter of Kaberle and his agent working out an extenion with the Bruins now, and Burke, Curran and Kaberle have requested secrecy from this point forward.  Sounds to me like if Kaberle is going anywhere, it will be with a new contract, and a hefty return coming to Toronto.  Could be bigger than just another late 1st.

  15. nordiques100 says:

again i really think its Wilson.

To better the team in his minds, especially a young one, he had to get KV outta there. I dont think at all he liked KV's leadership or lack thereof.

sure BB could have gotten more. Its like how Fletch was swift to move Carlo and Alex mere hours b4 BB's arrival.

I dont think this could have waited. The signs were telling. KV gave his worst efforts the last week or so. Wilson wanted him gone.

    Toronto's first maybe?

  18. reinjosh says:

I would have liked Carcillo as well. I do like having basically two early 2nds. The 2nd round has a lot of good players coming from it in the past couple years. YEs its not a mid or high first but its not exactly a high pick friendly draft. The Leafs could easily get two assets they feel were higher round material.

  19. canucks4thecup says:

I think its a good trade for both teams.  I laughed at all you leafs fans on here who were expecting sooo much more in return then what you got for Beauchemin…Burke will hopefully make a good draft choice, he clearly wants to get bigger as Versteeg didn't quite fit the bill….This deal clearly shows Burke made a mistake trading for Versteeg in the first…..Leafs fans should be happy Burke is admitting it by making this move

  20. Leafs_RegimeofBurke_ says:

Yet you somehow know about"this secret"!!!!!!

  22. DannyLeafs says:

I am not sure if this is a good/bad return situation, just very unexpected. When trading a roster player with some term left who is a 2/3rd liner a first and third are solid value if you were planning on moving the player anyway. However, Burke said several times that he wouldn't move Versteeg just for the sake of moving him, so the First and Third seems underwhelming when many of us expected that Versteeg wouldn't be moved unless we got something very valuable back.

  23. dumbassdoorman says:

I guess you failed to read the part where he said "a guy on twitter?"….chill out man

  24. lafleur10 says:

BRIAN BURKE has said that he has the 3rd pick from philly in play and offered in another deal! i'm beginning to think that the player he's targeting is scott gomez! burke did say that the player makes over 6 million dollars+ a year…….so please burke do us a favor and give us the 3rd we`ll take it for gomez, and then we can add brad richards.

  25. THENOTORIOUS says:

    remember who your talking with.

  26. HABSSTAR says:

Oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please… oh wait… nah, that won't happen.

  27. HABSSTAR says:

Sooooooooooo… another Montreal D-man out tonight.  What's that 4 of our top six d-men that won't be playing tonight?  Plus our best offensive player still out?

No body would have believed this if it was said at the start of the season.
