Chara Gets a New Deal is reporting that the Ottawa Senators have re-signed their star defenseman Zdeno Chara to a 2 year 9.5 million dollar deal, thus avoiding arbitration.Chara is scheduled to make 4.6 million dollars next year and 4.9 million during the 2005/2006 season. The 6’9 defenseman was the runner up for the Norris trophy last year, and he leads the NHL in combined plus/minus (+92) for the last 3 seasons. Considering what was given to players such as Sergei Gonchar and Bryan McCabe, this deal is more than fair. Most people would take the Big Z over both of those players.

With their top 3 defenseman already under contract, the Senators will now turn their attention to re-signing Martin Havlat. During an interview with the Team 1200, John Muckler stated that he does not foresee any problems in getting a new contract in place for Havlat.

As a Toronto fan I HATE the Senators and their constant whining…

I have to say though that this signing is a STEAL!

Chara is at least one of the top 5 defenseman, and honestly, I think he may be the BEST overall defenseman in the league right now.

Just saw that about 20 seconds ago on,you beat me to the punch hehe.Another great signing by the sens now maybe

they can sign 1 or 2 free agents to help out.Havlat is another signing they need to do first however.

Chara, Redden, Phillips, Devries, with Hasek in goal. I think the William Jennings will come to Ottawa this year (if there is a season). That is an excellent d-corps with a solid goalie (if he is healthy).

Now if they can only beat the leafs then life is good in Ottawa.

Right on!!! Another year of watching that big horse toss people around.

This guy is the best defensemen in the league, hands down, too bad he’s a sen.

As far as Havlat, who cares. He’s got a price tag on his head now. Hope someone takes him out at the knees.

Chara is an absolute stud. I still kick myself for trading him last year in my fantsy league. He scores. She socres on the PP. He fights and can play D in his own zone. I mean you just can’t teach 6 foot 9. He is worth EVERY penny he is getting.

Havalt on the other hand is a SHIT BAG who will get his comeupance (is that a word?) in Philly no matter what team he is on. His hit on Recchi and the league’s PANSY ASS way of dealing with it is the making of a LONG TERM WAR. I can see Donald Brashear smearing Havlat’s face all over the boards.

If i was OTT I would look at Karyia instead of Havalt. Karyia is simply better and a class player on a team that has CUP potential next year. Hasek is the X factor but their D looks good. Spezza needs to show his worth and they are ready to ROCK in the east.

    Anti Havlat commenters,get a life.Sure Havlat did a

cheap shot on Recchi so what, everybody in the league is taking cheap shots these days:Marchment,

Varada,Lemieux,Bertuzzi etc.It is up to the league

to put its pants and really crackdown on a player

    with a significant reprimend,not a goon to start a

mini riot and have the chance to get more injuries.

Dont forget that 2 wrongs dont make a right.

  7. TheCoach says:

Kariya over Havlat? Really? Havlat is only 22 and is already scoring one point per game.

Also, you guys really have to get over the Havlat incident. You’re all making it out to be the worst thing that’s ever happened, when Havlat didn’t even connect and Recchi never missed a shift. There have been far more severe incidents. Don’t you remember Lindros elbowing Dackell in the face a few years back? That was worse and Sens fans didn’t make a big deal out of it.

    Excellent signing.

Chara owns you and your soul.

  9. Havlat_hasit says:

Are you a godamn moron or what? Havlat is much better than Sykora for a number of different reasons. He’s more talented, younger and cheaper. This guy will undoubtedly be a superstar.

His hit on Recchi was minor and I dont recall Recchi missing a shift.

I can see Chara turning Brashear into mush.

You like the Flyers dont understand the fighters code. Thats why the two teams had over 100 penalty minutes in one game.
