Interestingly, Phaneuf compares quite favourably to Chara, Weber, Lidstrom.

Uses advanced stats and other stuff to shows how each player on each of the 30 teams is used. http://www.anguscertified.com/201112-player-usage-charts-fantasy-hockey-implications/ A guy from DobberHockey has some pretty good observations (not specific to a single team). For the Leafs, what’s interesting is Phaneuf. When compared to big names like Weber, Chara, Lidstrom, Seabrook, he fairs very similarily. He face higher quality of competition that Weber, and is on par with Chara, Lidstrom, Seabrook. He gets about the same offensive zone starts as Chara, Seabrook and Weber but a little more than Lidstrom. When the Phaneuf is on the ice, the Leafs take more shots than they face, on a very similar level to that of Weber/Chara/Lidstrom as well. Sort of paints a picture that while Phaneuf receives a lot of crap from people, he’s very comparable in the competition he plays, zone starts, and shots on net differential. It’s an interesting document. Take a look (definitely read the explanation for it too).

it is a risk, if they give up the 2014 20th overall pick then they made the right decision for sure. The only way this move is a terrible one is if they miss the playoffs 2 years in a row.

They can’t do it that way, if they can they will just wait until 2014 and trade their pick to the Stanley Cup champs for a huge package involving the 30th overall pick. Or they could trade their 2015 1st+ for the 30th overall pick.

If Parise walks and Marty retires they could have to forfeit a lottery pick which would be awesome. I love when other team’s GMs make poor decisions.

Nope disagree. They will end up giving up a higher pick gaurateed now because of this decision if they’re lucky it will only be about 10 spots higher. It’s a gamble for sure that no one seem coming.

However I don’t doubt Lou for a second. He refused to explain why he did but he has his reasons. Maybe it’s a goalie he’s very high on to replace Broduer? Maybe this is part of his plan to retain Parise by showing him he’s serious about winning now.

It’s all relative. The player they pick this year will also hit free agency earlier.

And yeah, if they make the playoffs the next two years they are also very unlikely to go as far as the finals.

I think the smartest thing would be to try and trade for a 1st in one of the next years then give up their’s allowing them to still get a decent pick in each year.
