Could the Leafs swing a deal for Nabokov?

Ron Wilson could be reunited with Nabokov. But will #Isles trade a quality G within East again for a draft pick or iffy prospect?

LeafsNation, only in Toronto are people so impressed with mediocrity. But the smart hockey fans know the Leafs are not nearly as good as their record.

Now if the Leafs turn it around and start playing well, I will be the first to say so.

You can be in complete agreement all you want, it doesn't make you right or me wrong. I am not blinded by "W's" either, I am actually very realistic. Could Kulemin be playing better, sure, but by your reasoning, when Kessel was going in slumps last year he should've logged 3rd or 4th line minutes. looking at the glass as half full, doesn't make me or my opinion stupid.

  3. GO_LEAFS_GO_Noni says:

    what about lupul-colbourne-kessel

     and       grabovski-connolly-kulemin.

kulemin and grabovski are pretty solid defenders and can protect connolly if he needs protection, while connolly can provide the playmaker role. while colbourne+kessel+lupul would be a great line. Colbourne could clear way for kessel and lupul and also provide some extra firepower than bozak.

  4. dumbassdoorman says:

Connolly is better defensively then you think. he was a part of the PK in Buf, so don't sell him short.

  5. TheLeafNation91 says:

Touche, I'll give you Kulemin, but a player that is going to want a big pay increase at seasons end needs to produce. We cannot justify his play and say it is great by saying he's getting chances, its just babying a player that ahs underperformed.

When I mean that most of you guys are blind by W's, I'm referring to JoelLeafs, mojo, and blaze specifically, not exactly you. All I heard the last week has how good they are, their in a slump, etc. But how can you justify a teams play when they are only killing about half of their PK's and has give up the most GA of any team in the league? Also, being outperformed most nights? You cannot, but the W's are giving Leaf fans the illusion this team is good. When in reality, if this team does not improve their play in the near future, it looks like no playoffs once again. Were not making a statement…Were just giving a warning about the reality of the situation. The Leafs are waking on a fine line…But they can improve it but its up to them.

  6. reinjosh says:

Good for you and Leafy, you seem to be outnumbered here.

And do you really think he will get a significant pay increase if he continues like this? Unlikely as hell freezing over. He's still an RFA and we all know Burke gets what he wants with them. If anything this might be the very thing we need to solve having to pay Kulemin and Grabovski 10 or 11 million dollars.
Yes it's not good that he han't been scoring yet but it will come soon enough.
  7. reinjosh says:

No its not but at the end of the day, all that really matters is the win. This would be a completely different story if we weren't winning but we are. We can afford this right now.

And I did admit. They aren't playing up to the standard I want, outside of a few players. But like I said, they are winning. I'm not worried right now.

Woopdeedoo. I was right about Grabo as well (and seem to remember being the only one saying it) and was right about Phaneuf. That doesn't make you right about everything.

Grabo is a center for a reason. He does everything you want a center to do. Everything. The dude is awesome at it. There is simply no reason to move him over to the wing. Not to mention it would hurt us more than help.

I remember last year (before the Beauchemin trade) cam and mojo having a discussion on grabbing Lupul. Mojo was for it, Cam against (and I was with cam at the time). Looking back, mojo calling for Lupul was insanely smart. Look how good he's been.

But the biggest addition he has made hasn't been points wise (which is pretty good in itself). No the biggest addition he made was giving Kessel someone with top 6 talent to work with. In the 44 games Lupul has been a Leafs, Kessel has put up 25 goals and 52 points. That's a 46 goal and 96 point pace.
  11. reinjosh says:

Do you read comments on here fully? Because I'm damn sure that JoelLeafs, mojo and blaze expressed concerns about certain things and aren't being blinded by the W's. But carry on.

  12. senators_choke says:

I don't mean to be condescending, but apparently you have a lot to learn about this game.

  13. senators_choke says:

LeafsNation, don't waste your time. Most of the Leaf fans have left this site long ago. Ever wonder why?

  14. toronto77 says:

Bozak is destined to be traded, I still think I would prefer MacArthur on that line rather than Conolly.

  15. mojo19 says:

We badly outplayed Florida and took the 5-1 loss because they scored every time they were in our end. We were outplayed by St.Louis but got a solid game from Scrivens and grabbed the win. And, to be fair, we looked great for stretches in that game.

I don't know what you guys expect exactly? This is not a tremendous team on paper, this is a team that should be in a dog fight for a playoff spot at the end of the year and were grabbing points early on. So enjoy it. Of course we're gonna lose some games, even lose some badly. We're a work in progress, that comes with the territory, but we're way better than we've been for the last couple years, and we're headed in the right direction. If you don't like, then jump ship, there's 29 other teams, we won't miss you guys.
  16. mojo19 says:

Nikolai Kulemin had 1 goal at this time last year, he finished with 30. He's a notorious slow starter. So is Iginla, so are a lot of players. Use a little discretion guys.

Kulemin has 2 goals and 4 assists so far this year. This would be a bad thing if he weren't getting lots of chances and being really involved. But he is, so logic dictates that its only a matter of time before it starts to come around. When he stops getting chances, that's when its time to get worried.
Stick with me LeafNation91, there's still so much more I have to teach you.
  17. mojo19 says:

And yes, Josh, not TheLeafNation91 was the one guy on this site really standing up for Grabovski while he was struggling. Nice try, trying to steal his thunder. SMH

Anyway's LeafNation and Leafy are the two guys on this site who never played the game of hockey so I don't know why we're debating with them anyways. They're giving their interpretations of the game from the perspective of ppl who never played. Their opinions are not all that valid.
Of course the team isn't playing that well. Nor should we be expected to. We are however, playing well enough to hang in and grab some points in the standings. Look at teams like last years Rangers, or the '09 Blues etc. Grab some points early on and hold onto a playoff spot! We're not winning the cup this year anyways, but some playoff excitement would be awesome for the fans (the true fans), and would be valuable experience for our young players.
  18. mojo19 says:

Ya buddy. Lupul is a pimp. I had him listed as a trade target  on my blog at the beginning of last year, and then brought it up again a couple weeks before the trade happened, which was weird. And ya, Cam hated the idea, but looks like a sweet trade so far. (knocking on wood)

  19. TheLeafNation91 says:

Says a guy who is all-time favourite Leaf was Kaberle.

  20. TheLeafNation91 says:

I did, but I cannot now , its kind of an epiphany. You'll experience it soon.

  21. TheLeafNation91 says:

'Lookin' good baby! I guess the realists think we're great again? haha. Seriously though, solid effort tonight.' This is just this thread from mojo.

this is versus St. Louis. Toronto was dominated that whole game, gave up a PP, gave up a 2-0 lead.

How is that a solid effort? Were we watching the same game?

  22. leafmeister says:

Its true, playing badly is discouraging, but you also have to allow for the possibility that this is just a slump that the team, as good teams are able to do, is surviving it based on either goaltending, or if thats bad, scoring.

But I agree, the team needs serious improvement if they are going to keep up this pace.

  23. reinjosh says:

Yeah that's what I was talking about. I didn't like the idea either. I thought it was a waste to bring in a guy that really wasn't a powerforward and had struggled with injuries. Boy was I wrong. Good call.

  24. reinjosh says:

Yeah that's what I was talking about. I didn't like the idea either. I thought it was a waste to bring in a guy that really wasn't a powerforward and had struggled with injuries. Boy was I wrong. Good call.

  25. reinjosh says:

So one comment, makes all three of them delusional. if you read early comments they had concerns of their own.

Difference is we won. We're not absolving them from responsibility of things but we're giving them a minor break since they won. Completely different.
  26. reinjosh says:
I never said this team was amazing. I never said we're cup challenging. All I said is that we're winning right now and really it makes me less worried about things than if we weren't.
If you want to disagree go ahead. I have no issue with that. I see the issues you see. I'm not ignoring them. All I'm saying is that as long as we're winning, they aren't the end of days your making them out to be.
  27. reinjosh says:

While I like that stat because it backs the two of us up, I will mention one little small thing. Kulemin wasn't playing on this line yet (if I remember correctly), so only 1 goal was a little bit more acceptable.

Regardless I see no reason to be all that concerned. As you said it's not like the chances aren't coming. He is still getting them. It will come. And even if he only hits 20 goals this year, it works out for us. It's cheaper in the long run then.
  28. TheLeafNation91 says:

As long as their occuring, the likelyhood of losing will happen.

Tonights against Ottawa is a big test, lose, and then they lost four points already to a bottom feeder.

  29. reinjosh says:

Oh of course. I don't think any of us are disagreeing with that. We're just not as concerned about it right now since we're currently winning.

I wouldn't really call Ottawa a bottom feeder right now. They aren't good but almost being .500 isn't bad at all.
  30. TheLeafNation91 says:

But they will and most likey will be a bottom feeder team.

Losing points from these will hurt them in April.

I will predict an Ottawa win…All beacuse of their PP.

  31. reinjosh says:

But they aren't right now. Looking at what they will be or what they were is irrational. They aren't a bottom feeder right now and they weren't when they beat us last time this season. That itself infers they aren't playing the game of a bottom feeder. If you can't understand that simple of logic, I don't know what to say.

  32. mojo19 says:

My all time favourite Leaf is Mats Sundin. But ya, Kabba, Antropov. Unlike you, I'm a Leafs fan, so I cheer for our players. That's just the way it goes.

Anyway's, you can't have it both ways. You base your opinion of the team based on the way they have played, and not on the results. But you base your opinion of Kulemin based on results and not the way he plays. Hypocrite.
And just like you said some ppl can be blinded by the W's to not see when the team plays poorly, you are blinded by the L's to not see when they play well (i.e., badly outplaying Florida). Once again, hypocritical.
  33. mojo19 says:

And for the record, Kaberle is 5th on the Leafs in career assists, all time. I'm older than you, I grew up watching this guy when he was great and before you were able to formulate opinions. Plays a huge factor.
