I would agree with this for any other position but goal and Luongo’s NMC is another obstacle. It’s not like another position where you can scale back his minutes to ride out a slump. He has maybe three more good seasons IMO. I don’t like this particular gamble.

Who cares about the contract, it’s not like mlse doesn’t have the money to pay it and there are plenty of ways to get out of it without it counting against the salary cap, ie retirement, demotion to Marlies etc. which they won’t have to worry about for a couple years anyways.

Get the best goalie available and that looks like it’s going to be loungo

This shouldn’t need to be commented on but if Luongo didn’t work out you’d be stuck with a terrible contract for 10 years. With the attention we pay to bad contracts it would feel like a 30 year contract.

Worse having Luongo is obstacle to findingn an actual long term solution in net. I’d much rather over pay for Bernier, taking a short term gamble rather than a long term one.

I wouldn’t be opposed to picking up Dipietro. If he could stay healthy and even come close to returning to top form…

Even with the ridiculous contract and shakey playoff experience, Luongo has still been one of the best goalies in the league the last couple years. He is defintely on the decline but he will be more than just a salary dump. The Leafs will have to throw in a lower end prospect or draft pick as well as a player to offset some of the cap hit. So its going to be either Armstrong, Lomabrdi or Connolly (I think the only way we’re getting rid of Komisarek is sending him to the Marlies). I’m guessing the prospect will be a d-men since they have a backlog on defence.

so my offer would be Colby Armstrong or Matthew Lombardi
and Korbian Holzner for Roberto Luongo.

and Burke pulls off a miracle deal where we get Dipietro and the 4th overall for no top players, top prospects, or top picks. And don’t forget the Dipietro’s injury issues slowly vanish and we win the cup with him 8 times before he retires.
