I’d give a slight nod to Carolina on this one.

Tanabe still has lots of promise, but his play this year took a huge downturn. Markov’s a better all-around defender, and should help the Canes regain their form of last year.

Pretty fair deal. I think Tanabe will come back at some point in his career, and Danny Markov is very injury prone, so….i think the Yotes got the better end of the deal by getting younger.

Even though I try I still can’t think of why the leafs ever traded this guy away. The Cans won on this one. Markov is a good young d man that will help any team he plays on.

  4. mikster says:

They traded two former 1st rounder and the other guy has high potentials to be a 1st, 2nd d-man.

    That for Markov? Horrible.

If the Canes play like they did last year they will have the best shot at Ovechkin. And the best shot at being beat by a team comprised of Dave Coulier, Gordie Howe, Marcel Dionne, and some other 60 something NHLers.

Tanabee couldn’t even crack the line-up in Carolina!!! He was a wasted draft pick by the Canes. He is too small and too weak in his own end. He only played in the Finals a few years ago because some defensemen got hurt. This kid is a bust.

Paul Coffey talked Gretzky into this deal because he is friends with Tanabee. This goes along with the Amonte signing (at the behest of Barrett).. a move in the wrong direction.

Markov is a keeper and is still developing. Add the steal from Colorado of Vrbata and the Canes have some fine young talent to build on.

Great trade for Rutherford; Gretzky should fire his friends in management.

How do you know? Tanabe had a very solid rookie year, been injured and is only 22. He may come back as a good defenseman since Coffey develops defensemen. And, they got Carolina’s top defenseman prospect.

For a d-man that is good, but gets injured so many times? In the long run, Coyotes won this deal.

  8. Freeze says:

Yeah, he’s on Janet’s crack, which is not such a bad place to be.

  9. acebailey says:

Those 2 1st rounders are both a bust though. Tannabe is a wuss and his little wrist will be hurt again before you know it, and if that other guy was worth anything he would have cracked the NHL by now.

I know it has been a while since I have been on this site, but I was saying last year that Tanabe had fallen out of favor with the Front office in Raleigh and would be moved… there you go. Carolina is deep at the blue line, that is one of the few good things you can say about them from last year. They trimmed some fat, got rid of some dead weight, and with a healthy Brindy and Cole… we can hope for a better year this year. Carolina got, essentually, the top pick, and still have Irbe to trade in a goalie hungry market. On Irbe, ok… he sucked this year, but he is one of those psychotic goalies that has somthing to prove, and when he gets to his next team, he will play like a bastard to prove the Canes wrong for not giving him the #1 job and then letting him go. The Canes have a killer goalie in their system, Rob Zepp, and they don’t need any more netminders right now, although I don’t know if Desroches, or how ever you spell it, is ready for back up Weekes.

I say Irbe to Boston for Thomas and a late pick.

As always you try to make things up to pretend you know what your talking about:

Tanabe has NEVER had a solid year. For you information, his “solid rookie year” he was sent down to the minors because he couldn’t compete with bigger players in his end. He only played 31 games. He is a career -53 on a team that emphasis defense.

    Coffey develops defensemen???

Is that a new Miksterism? Since when???

Name me one defensemen he has developed?

As usual you don’t know what your talking about.

I really wish Andre Savard could have worked out a deal for Danny. I saw some rumours involving him late last year, and thought he’d be a great fit on the Habs blueline, as he can move the puck, plays well in his own end, and isn’t afraid to throw the body around.

But Carolina shouldn’t make a jersey for him just yet. There was a report that Markov is currently in Russia working on a deal to play back home next season. If he doesn’t want to play in Carolina, then Rutherford has given up two quality players for basically nothing.

Knyazev was only drafted two years ago. Give him a chance to improve. Not everybody can, or should, play in the league at 19.
