Eddie O to be Named New Penguins Head Coach

Penguins to name Ed Olczyk head coach

Wednesday, June 11, 2003

By Dejan Kovacevic, Post-Gazette Sports Writer

The Penguins will name Ed Olczyk their new head coach in a news conference at noon today at Mellon Arena.

Olczyk, 36, has been a broadcaster with the Penguins’ network for three years after a 16-season NHL career with the Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings. He has no coaching experience.

This is a direct link from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. I am in total shock.

It never dawned on me that Patrick had narrowed the list down and figured out that Olczyk had been even mentioned as a top candidate.

I think the Penguins are on the verge of desperation with money, since Olczyk must have come in cheap.

However, Pens fans should have some faith in Eddie. He has no coaching experience, which is the only thing that would worry me, but he has the right attitude, he is young…he tought by good coaches, who knows? Maybe this will turn out good.

Another bad move in a recent spate of errors out of Pittsburg. What is Craig Patrick on these days?

The best choice for coach, and many will laugh:

    Brian Trottier.

Too me, he was the best available coach for what the Pens have: young, inexperienced and without direction. He has a Cup with the Pens and would have the added incentive of making up for last year.

After Eddie gets canned is Craig Simpson next?

    Bad move.

That franchise just needs to move. It obviously can’t survive in Pittsburgh. Fresh start, seriously.

WOW, this comes as a shocker, i thought for sure the next coach would have been Ted Nolan, Larry Robinson, Brent Pederson or others. I don’t want to rush to judgement on Edzo as i have faith in him and his hockey knowledge. He has seen most of the players in the organization. I hope that they bring in some new blood for his assistant coaches. Edzo might not have been my first choice but i will support him as he will be the one to bring the cup back to the burgh. GO PENS!!! Does this help bring Mario back??

This is no stranger than Granato coaching the Avs (although personally, I thought we got the wrong Granato).

  6. Kashin says:

On Monday he was on the radio in New Jeresy before he called the devils game. THey asked him if he would ever be considering coaching if they asked him in Pittsburgh. He said no one has ever asked that to him before. He said if he would he would want to start out in a minors club. Typical response. not shocked at all.

At the rate the Pens are going they are going to need Eddie-O to put on the pads again. He can be like Player-Coach Reg Dunlop. Now if they could just get a quality guy like Phil Borque or Troy Loney to come back and coach they would be all set…….muuuuhahahahahaha.

SCTP – On my command unleash hell

    Ogilthorpe – make me puke!

SCTP – “Remember that night? I went up to your room, and you had those bra and panties on?”

  9. BlueJacketshockey says:

Its official Ted Nolan will never coach in the NHL again.

  10. guinsfan4life says:

Edzo said he hasn’t talked to Mario since Friday and they didn’t discuss him coming back.

I actually think this means Mario is going to retire. I have thought that since his last game. There was a story going around that because Mario said to reporters “see you in September” a week ago after his golf tournament that he dropped a hint he was coming back.

  11. guinsfan4life says:

Edzo said at the press conference that he kept his interest very close to his belt. Only family members, close friends and the penguins organization.

  12. guinsfan4life says:

Trottier had a hard time communicating with players in NY, which is one of the problems Kehoe had and why he was fired.

The pens may have all you suggest, they need a coach who will communicate with them and a coach that knows each player’s weaknesses and how they can improve. Edzo has a heads up on that cause he has watched the team closely in the past years. That way, he can communicate personally with each young player.

  13. MantaRay says:

I disagree again. Trottier got fired because the Country Club knew he had no clout.

Trottier would be a great teacher for the Pens and I think he is better for experience from last year.

Ok I’ll admit that I’m skeptical but there are reasons why I think that Eddie O will make a good coach

    1. the team is very young, and Olczyk will be able to relate easier to the team and vice versa

    2. he really is a great teacher. after watching him for two years as the pens color man I’ve come to realize that not only does he know hockey, i mean really know hockey, but he is a great communicator and will be able to express his ideas to the players.

    3. He has be around the team for a couple years now and he has a strong knowledge of the players and their strenghts and weaknesses.

Plus I was in the press pit with him at the end of the seaon and heard him talking about the team and some of his ideas with a guy from the post gazette and the local news channel and you know what, i liked what i heard. Give him a chance before you condemn him, although i dont think he will get the team into the playoffs, especially if mario retires, i think he is a step in the right direction when it comes to taking all these kids with “potential” and turning them into a hockey team

    just some thoughts
