i guess their depth isn't terrible,,, but no real strong defensive "sure things"….. their best bet at a top 2 is klefbom… but even him isn't a real blue chipper for a top 2 guy… gardiner is …. granted its extremely hard to find the top 2 d-man … more so than a top line forward…..and im not sold on murray being that guy as well….oh well

problem is Edmonton does have a lot of defensive depth. They just have no real NHL ready defensemen. while I'm all for trading down to get Murray, I don't see the point doing it to get Murray plus a defensive prospect.

yeah Grigs is difficult to pass up…. but then you look at the defensive depth… and its weak.. its a tough situation for them….. i'm just being realistic and hoping we (habs) stay in the fourth overall selection at the least right now… theres a small possibility of sliding into last in the conference and getting the 3rd pick… i'm just real excited for forsberg

The Wisniewski deal I posted is definitely missing something. Maybe add Johansen to the deal and Edmonton would do it. Not sure if Columbus would at that point though. Screw it, this is getting difficult Edmonton should just keep the damn pick. lol.

and I honestly doubt Edmonton would trade the 2nd overall pick down. While Tinordi is a solid prospect, I see no real advantage for Edmonton to trade away Grigorenko for him and Murray. I get the feeling Edmonton would only trade down for a massive overpayment.

Oh well, fun to talk about.

that trade for wiz wouldn't really be in their best interest.... I'm thinking a trade down a couple spots would be the best course of action....

In my perfect world.... Habs fall to the 3rd overall pick no lower than 4th...
Edmonton holds at second overall.... Habs trade up from 3rd or 4th...

To EDM: Jarred Tinordi, 3rd/4th overall (Murray/Forsberg)

To MTL: 2nd overall (Grigorenko)

Hell I would even be FINE with something like this...

Weber, Diaz, Tinordi, 3rd/4th overall...for..... 2nd overall

Tinordi is a strong prospect, projected to be a top pairing shut down defense.... most likely top 4 though..... weber is a decent defenseman who is extremely versatile and has a great shot from the point....and diaz brings some more good young depth with him.... Edmonton get three real good defense prospects.. two of which are NHL ready and looking to mature further into their roles... Tinordi has alot of upside to him.. and the 3rd or 4th pick can bring another blue chipper to edmontons deepening pool of youngsters.... i think that despite not giving up a huge prospect in the deal Edmonton only moving a spot or two down in the draft while ac*****ulating depth is more enticing then bringing in say a Wiznieski...

yeah agreed… quincey can fill in for any D-man in the top 4 who may be having a rough few games… and second PP unit?… maybe first… either way its good ice time…. 1st 2nd… doesn't matter who ever is clicking that night gets the majority PP time… lidstrom has maybe one more year left… so slot him in!

I dont think Tambellini would do that, he likes his draft afterall...

But really I dont think Horcoff handcuffs the team that badly. Hemsky is gone next year, Smyth's horrible contract off the books, theres 8-10 million alone depending on Smyth re-signing. And they already have 4 million in space this year. I dono I just dont see them needing to shed his salary...certainly not at the expense of the 2nd overall.

Lastly Wiez is overrated/overpaid if you ask me..bad idea trading for him :< Not to mention his constant need to suspend himself lol.

I know, they already have 10 picks since they still have the rest of their mid/low round picks (except for the 7th they flipped to SJS with Moore). Can you imagine a dozen+ picks?

Hard to miss when you have 10+ picks...especially when one of them is a top 5.

Edmonton does have a lot of prospect defensemen in the system though. While it is possible none of them are ready for the NHL next year, if I had to choose between Grigorenko and Murray I would pick Grigorenko. Unless the return for trading down from 2nd to 3rd overall pick insane, I would be willing to let Murray go.

An interesting option could be to trade the 2nd overall away for a top 2 defense. I doubt Myers or Weber would be available although they would be my target. Straight up trade any day, I would even through in Peckham or something. Another possibility would be to trade Columbus the pick for Wisniewski.

Maybe something like:

To Edmonton:

Wisniewski
31st overall pick

To Columbus:

2nd overall pick
Horcoff

Edmonton dumps Horcoff's contract, picks up a no.1 D, and a decent pick for a potential franchise player, Columbus gets the Yakupov/Grigorenko combo. Columbus might have to give up more but you get the idea.

He may not play top 4 right away in Detroit but they can give him top 4 minutes anytime they need to. He will also slip into the top 4 if Lidstrom retires. Definitely worth the 1st round pick (25th-30th overall at this pace) they paid for him.
