your talking about transfer fees, which can be several million £, salaries in soccer are still less then major league baseball, and for the most part, the NFL, also if your talking about economics, consider the revenues of those leagues in comparison to the NHL, the broadcasting rights for the EPL alone just sold for 2.2 billion £'s, so if you look at it from a financial standpoint, hockey players still make disproportionate salaries when weighed against league revenue

Wellwood only played 48 games. Yes he had a better ppg than Gomez, but he only played just over half the season. The chances are very slim that if Wellwood had have stayed healthy the whole season, he would have kept that pace up, especially considering his size and the injuries to other Leafs. Gomez has proven he can keep up that 70+ point pace over a full season on a number of occasions. With him, you know what you're getting. With Wellwood, you've got a projected pace of 4 more points than Gomez (if they both played a full season), and that's it. Wellwood would not have hit 80 points this year. He was playing above his head and had a very good ppg when he got injured, but there is no way it would have kept up. I like Wellwood, and I do believe he will become an 80-85 point player in the NHL, but it wouldn't have been this year and it very likely won't be next year. Right now, Gomez is the better player, there is no doubt about it whatsoever.
Totally agree, owners/gms seem to be forgetting the lockout that they caused by offering ridiculous contracts that they couldn't afford. I guess they don't really care, somehow the fans were convinced it was the players' fault for asking for too much money...as if they owners care more about hockey. Where are those reduced ticket prices that everybody thought was inevitable?

Anyway, Im not an Oilers fan, but that was a damn ballsy move to let Smyth walk and it made sense when you think of the big picture. Unfortunately, there will always be somebody to offer more money.

GM's should follow Kevin Lowe's example (Ryan Smyth contract). Offer what is fair, and if the player gets greedy - let them walk.

If all the teams did this, money would not be as large of a factor for UFA's. They would have to be convinced by the teams chance of winning, icetime, existing players, franchise operations, and overall city appeal.
The team offering the above criteria most desirable by the player would win.

IMO all it takes is a couple of stupid GM's to overpay a few players, and the whole marketplace is ruined.
