Hartley to coach Atlanta

(Jan. 11th) As first reported by TFP on Thursday, Bob Hartley will be the Atlanta Thrashers new head coach. Hartley is expected to be behind the bench possibly for the team’s next game Monday in Philadelphia, but no later than a home game Wednesday against Montreal.

that’s an extreme uplift for Atlanta.

A winning coach with a losing team, this should be interesting.

  2. MossRocks says:

Hartley should have waited for a good job. The good news is that Hartley has a good track record and his level of success in the next couple of weeks should tell the Prez to start looking for a new GM to replace the FAS baby, Waddell. With a real GM, Atlanta could gain some respectability.

If what coaches say is true and they really like challenges, then Hartley did get a good job. I’ve seen that you are very leary of how the Thrashers run their organization. Well, no one is perfect or even close to it. We’ve gotta take what we can get here in Atlanta and be able to enjoy it. Otherwise, why in the hell do we continue to post here?

I could criticize this team until kingdom come, but I prefer to enjoy them and extol all of the positives that I can.

  4. MossRocks says:

Fair enough. Hartley is a good coach and we should be happy. Waddell still needs to go. If Hartley can’t get respectable hockey out of this team, the blame has to lie on Waddell.

So if its reported by TFP.com, that means it won’t happen.

How many times has the Fourth Period reported something as “finalized” or “pending a signature”…when in fact the deal NEVER happens.

Remember Tony Amonte has agreed to a deal with the New York Rangers.

That Petr Nedved has been traded.

Or what about Martin Lapointe/Kyle Mclaren for Martin Skoula/Alex Tanguay deal as “immenent.”

I swear, if I see a rumor reported as “done deal” or “pending” on TFP.com…that rumor is as good as bogus. That site is like 2 for 341 in the “definite deal” department. TFP.com should never be cited as a credible source for a trade rumor.

  6. habs_88_4life says:

Morris for Nedved and Kloucek never went through either

  7. Leaf_Expert says:

    I agree totally with you….

    Except Miks probably doesn’t

  8. habs_88_4life says:

If I was Hartley I would’ve waited for a better skilled team to fire thier coach or pursue a different job in a different organization. But if he wanted a challenge, he’s got one now……

  9. mikster says:

    Just one.

TFP reported that Amonte VERBALLY agreed to a Rangers contract, but in order for that to happen, the Rangers would have had to trade Nedved.

TFP was NOT THE ONLY ONE TO report that. ABC and other sources also followed it up and everyone was on the right track if the Rangers did actually trade Nedved. They could NOT trade Nedved so nothing happened.

    That was ONE story.

As for the Lapointe and Tanguay thing, TFP was not the first one to report that.

What you don’t mentioned, which makes you look quite foolish, is that TFP first reported about Guerin, Holik, Chelios, Joseph, they were first to report about Sutter coaching the Flames.

So, way to make yourself look like a total jack ass.

No trade rumors are really credible, since 95% of trade rumors never actually happen.

  10. Devilspector says:

i can see that. Heartley is good with young players and will help out atlantas defence problems.Expect Kovalchuck and heatley to be even better under heartey.

  11. Johnny_Canuck says:

This should be interesting… I wonder what Hartley can do for this team… I mean, being the Coach of a team who has recently won the cup does not necessarily mean he made them that way, there are lotsa guys who have come up to the league with excellent credentials who have flopped (ex: Tom Renney), now… you get a guy like Hartley coming to the NHL to coach the Avs who had recently won a cup and everyone thinks he’s an amazing coach to get such a great team to win… “Oh my goodness” some people are saying “how could he stoop so low as to coach a losing team”. My opinion is that Hartley is about to prove whether he really is a great coach or not…

  12. Tradedude says:

    hartley not heatley, lol.

  13. Tradedude says:

He’ll be fired by Valentine’s Day.

Don’t ask why, Waddell has a thing with making one’s holiday’s miserable and firing a worthy coach.

Just look what happened to Fraser not to long ago.

  14. cwhockey says:

While this could indeed become true, don’t think it is right at this moment. Atlanta’s GM said he is still considering two candidates. Now, he could be blowing smoke about that but it seems unlikely. Thrashers TV announcers talked with him and one or two others involved, and the very distinct impression is that Hartley isn’t the coach, yet.

He may well be named coach, but this report is somewhat premature. Guess we will know in a few days.

  15. Overtime says:

Excellent move!! The most important move that Don Waddell has made as GM thus far. Finally, Atlanta has a coach who knows how to teach team defense. You will see Atlanta’s goals against take a nose dive in the next year. Also, watch for Atlanta to make a pitch for Martin Lapointe of Boston – someone Hartley coached in juniors and was very high on.

This is a huge challenge for Hartley, but I think he will do well. He’s a good teacher with the young guys and he will have high draft picks to work with from past years and from the 2003 draft as well. Suddenly, Atlanta’s future looks much brighter.

I was sure that I heard them say on ‘The Score’ that “SLAM! Sports is reporting…” when mentioning the Sutter signing.

  17. aaron says:

I don’t know whether to laugh or…wait, yes I do! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! Have fun w/ the smucks in Atlanta, Bobby!!! Good luck trying to get Uwe Krupp to play defense. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it!
