It's Official – Burke is Headed back to Philadelphia

According to TSN.ca and the team’s official website, the Sean Burke trade to the Flyers has indeed happened.

The old hand in the nets out west, Burke returns to Philadelphia along with young wingers Branko Radivojevic and Ben Eager in exchange for Mike Comrie.
In addition, the Flyers have announce the retirement of current backstop Jeff Hackett.

The way this all turned out I really don’t have a problem with. There is no superfluous goaltender, and the return for Comrie (who turned out to be a square peg anyway) is acceptable.

The imminent return of Claude Lapointe meant no room or playing time for Comrie, who didn’t really fit in with the style of play or coaching staff.

I will take Burke over Hackett, I’m just glad they didn’t overpay for him. The two kids they got as well more than make up for the loss of Comrie, who was acquired for defensive prospect Jeff Woywitka and draft picks.

Robert Esche will retain his number one status once he returns from his knee injury.

Only through the use of hallucinogenics can anyone view this trade as a “good trade” for the Coyotes.

The Flyers essentially got rid of a weak forward; a spare part, who was going to be scratched in favor of a third line defensive forward.

This defies the rules of supply & demand

Burke was in demand. Several teams had made inquires about Burke in the past few weeks (including both the Flyers & Rangers).

Why? Because he is the best goalie available right now (better than Kolzig, Turek and all the others mentioned).

True he has not been in the playoffs for a long time, but he has been voted team MVP almost everywhere he has gone.

Its also not his fault that he also hasn’t been on a playoff caliber team since being banished by New Jersey (not including his temp stay in Philly).

    Not in demand: Comrie

No one wanted Comrie when he was available a few months ago. His agent pushed, and pushed rumors to drum up interest until Philly stole him away. But, Philly discovered the hard way that Comrie is too small and too frail to play in the bigger, tougher, more demanding Eastern conference.

Philly SHOULD have been the one throwing in more players for Burke. Instead, Mike Barrett gave up the farm for a spare part.

This was a steal for Bobby Clarke and has put his team closer to the finals than he was last week.

While the Yotes have too finish the season with Boucher coming down to earth (0-3-1-1, 3.93GAA and .861 svp%). and will probably miss the playoffs now.

The Flyers are alot better with Burke and Esche,

Branko Radivojevic and potentially Ben Eager in exchange for Mike Comrie (or woywitka).

This was a steal and the Yotes management should be investigated for such a stupid move.

The Flyers will probably win the East because of this move.

Well if they want a goalie… I am still sticking to my guns and saying Comrie to the Ducks for Giggy. and until the trade deadline… I will keep with it.

  3. flyersfan10897 says:

you cant say they traded comrie, woywitka, and a first rounder. they were originally traded for each other. one of them will cancel out.

  4. flyersfan10897 says:

I agree. I didnt think Woywitka was playing to potential. Come on, he couldnt beat out Jim Vandermeer or Dennis Seidenberg? His numbers with the phantoms were not that great. he is doing a little better at his new AHL club, but still doesnt seem like what he was supposed to be.

  5. flyersfan10897 says:

Well if they were looking for a goalie, which they obviously were, Burke was the best on the market. Kolzig wasnt even the answer to being a backup, and Cujo probably isnt going anywhere now that Haseks out for the season. Im glad to see we got so much for just comrie. i wouldve been pissed if they threw in seidenberg. him and pitkanen are the only two defensemen in the system that actually shoot.

  6. flyersfan10897 says:

well, we stole roenick, and gave up langkow for a first rounder (jeff carter). we stole amonte for a player that was immediately sent to pittsburgh for jan hrdina. and now we get all this?

    All Time

    From Philadelphia

Mikael Renberg, Daymond Langkow, Brian Boucher, Paul Ranheim, Guillame Lefebvre, Mike Comrie, 2nd round pick, two 3rd round picks

    From Phoenix

Rick Tocchet, Michal Handzus, Robert Esche, Tony Amonte, Sean Burke, Branko Radivojevic, 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, and a conditional pick.

    sounds fair to me.

dont forget stefan ruzicka. hes the OHLs leading rookie scorer in his first season on the smaller ice. He played in the WJC for the czech team. i think hes a pretty good prospect that turned out to be better than originally thought.

  8. flyersfan10897 says:

You partly answered your own question. You said hes not the answer to winning the cup, then call him the backup. Now, correct me if im wrong, but usually the goalie sitting on the bench during the playoffs isnt the one that gets the W or the L. Esche and Burke played together, in a reverse situation, and are supposedly the best of friends. i was skeptical of giving up Comrie and Seidenberg for just burke and radivojevic, but with the way it happened, it just made the team stronger.

Burke is injury prone? so one season where a goalie has a lingering injury makes him a career injury prone player? before last season, burke has played in many 40 game, 50 game, and a few 60 game seasons.

Why do you talk like you are a GM? You’re more like a VD

  14. RESCHE42 says:

I don’t believe that Comrie was too small to play in the East. Want a reason Why? Martin St. Louis in Tampa. He is 5 years older than Comrie and a full inch shorter. Comrie has the potential to be just as good if not better in the next five years. He can skate, maybe not as fast as St. Louis but pretty damn close. St. Louis in 01-02 had 35 pts and then in 02-03 had 70 points. Comrie was on pace for about 35-37 pts if he were to play a full season and that is in hitch’s defense first system which will stifle any scorer. You can’t tell me he’s too small to play in the east, and I don’t think you can claim he is a spare part, because how many people made those claims against St. Louis only to be proved wrong. Comrie is a fast skater with good hands, and a welcomed addition to any team, in my opinion Coyotes made out like bandits, especially since Burke has maybe one or two years left tops.

I am not questioning Bob Clark’s Character. I think he is a good GM and I am a HUGE fan. I just thought he gave up too much in trading Comrie, though I must say I really don’t know much about these two prospects. Hopefully they turn out to be good. Though now that I think about it maybe it isn’t as bad as a trade as I initially thought. I am not big on Burke at all. I think they would be better off with the young Fin goaltender, though for the Flyer’s sake I hope I am wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time…

  17. Flyers_01 says:

Could you repeat that? You weren’t very clear on how you feel.

  18. MantaRay says:

Comrie IS too small and NOT tough enough for the East. St. Louis has a lot of heart that is the biggest difference between he and Comrie.

Burke may have one or two years left but he has a better chance of winning the Cup in those two years. This was a steal for Philly.

In the words of Stan Fishler: “The Flyers got Burke for nothing. Comrie is a waste”.

  19. GretzNYR99 says:

Phoenix has better, and more hockey knowledgable ownership in the form of a man that shattered every offensive record the NHL ever knew of.

I’m not saying the Rangers have an excuse, but had Sather had a more hockey knowledgable owner to have to look up to, he’d be making genius deals like he did in Edmonton, and we’d already be a contender if we started over like he would have, had not Neil Smith created a huge mess, and Dolan (Rangers owner) got so involved like George Steinbrenner with the Yankees.

Bottom line is… something’s gotta give.

  20. GretzNYR99 says:

Great, now he’s resorted to coming on yet another screen name trying to frame me.

  21. MantaRay says:

As a Devil fan: this deal sucked for us, because it made the Flyers alot stronger and they gave up nothing to do it.

Stan Fishler on the trade: It was a steal for the Flyers who gave up on Comrie who is a “waste”.

It was the Flyers who should have given up two or three players just for Burke, instead Clarke got a great goalie, an Young All-Star and a strong prospect for a 4th line player who can’t play defense.

    This was a STEAL
