Jagr Broadway Bound?

According to many sources, The Score, RDA.Ca, spectorshockey.net and thefourthperiod.com, the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers are in heavy discussions about a trade that includes Jaromir Jagr. While nothing yet is imminent, reports say the teams are in involved in trade talks. The Rangers coach/Gm/President Glen Sather said yesterday they made some calls regarding a trade yesterday, but mostly referring to defensemen. This gives reason to believe the Rangers are interested in possibly Sergei Gonchar or Brendon Witt.

More to come as things develop..

Till next time…

I say I hope this happens. Jagr, like the rest will be a bust in New York. Oh he’ll score, and get his points but the team will continue to lose high scoring games because Sather still thinks he is living in the 80’s with Kurri and Gretzky flying through neutral zones, and goalies who never went in the butterfly or even down on their pads unless they fell.

I strongly belive Sather’s time has passed as a GM and a coach. God bless him for trying to resurect that style, but it aint gonna happen.

This however could be a smoke screen to get a defensman. Sather really can’t be that stupid to get another skilled winger. Or could he???

  2. distance7 says:

They need to just GET THIS OVER WITH. Sather is about to get fired if something doesn’t happen almost immediately, and it’d be smarter to take Witt over Gonchar if they’re going after a defenseman too, they have enough guys that won’t play in their defensive zone.

  3. GretzNYR99 says:

    Well said, I agree.

  4. wheresthesoda says:

has anyone thought about getting witt and jagr in the same trade??

get rid of hlavac and carter…getting rid of 2 guys that have been in the doghouse all year and getting that superstar they dont have in bure.

it cant be that bad can it?

also..dont trade poti to them..he is still young and plenty of time to mature. he is trying folks.

but everyone is saying poti sucks he is an offensive defensman..well guess what, there are no more offensive defensman anymore, why?

bc of the devils and there boring ass system. every team is doing it, i really hate it.

honestly i want jagr..what the hell is sather waiting for, get jagr and keenan.

  5. GretzNYR99 says:

It’s not Sather, I’ve said this time and time again. It’s James Dolan who tells him to go out and get the big names. Good ol’ Jim is the owner of the Rangers and Cablevision, NY’s cable company and has a neverending pocket of money due to the fact that he can just raise cable prices for every year the Rangers and Knicks miss the playoffs.

Dolan is the equivalent of George Steinbrenner, except for the fact that he’s quiet about his intentions and opinions. When Dolan wasn’t hands on in the early 90’s and let Neil Smith run things, we made the playoffs and won the cup. Dolan eventually told Smith to make a number of outrageous trades and this team went downhill. Steinbrenner in the 80’s was a hands-on owner, took activity in everything and ran the show, and they lost. He’s a bad owner with a bad temper. He’s also being a hands-on owner now, hence why every single staff member wants out of NY, and why we haven’t won a World Series in 3 years. The first year, Arizona upset us, and then Steinbrenner got pushy after that and fucked over the whole team. Torre’s gone after this year, as well as Cashman, and Torre’s assistants and coaches… Stottlemyre, Mazzilli left this year to coach Baltimore, everyone else wants out. Dolan is doing the same thing to the Rangers, but has made the problem worse, not better. He thinks that Steinbrenner’s approach will win, and it won’t, not in Hockey.

  6. Sands says:

First of all to the guy’s above.. Sorry…. sather is staying in NY for a while….. dolan loves him… and since dolan is the only one above Sather… it won’t happen. Bringing Jagr in is a good idea… as much as you might not like it.

1.Lindros if you watched has been needing a Scoring winger since Bure went down and out. With the way Lindros is playing…. That line would be amazing…..

    2. The power play should get much better. Kovelav should feel good with Jagr in…. making him feel more safe to score….

When the Rangers score on the PP once they are 3 games over 500. When they score 2 PP goals they are 6 games over there loses….. I mean come on.

Witt is a big D man.. and getting him would be nice…. But if Gonchar actually hit’s Broadway as well…… the Rangers may just take the East by surprise…. And if they don’t…. Bye bye Sather…..

The truth of the matter is…. It’s not Sather…. it’s partly the Players…but truthfully … to me… When someone plays against the Rangers it’s like they are playing there last game…… It’s what has been built since they won….. no one is scared to come to the garden anymore to play against the Rangers … just scared to play on the team and suck.

That’s the truth of the matter.

  7. GretzNYR99 says:

    Jagr and Keenan don’t mix.

The only way I’d be a fan of this trade is if Witt and/or Kolzig comes into the deal with Jagr. I don’t care if we have to sweeten the pot, but we need to address goaltending and defensive problems.

    Calling Mike Richter…

  8. laserman says:

I also agree, but they also need to give Markannen another shot. Face it, Dunham has been brutal as of late and he is no longer a goalie that I would try to make the playoffs with…

  9. GretzNYR99 says:

I agree, but Markkanen is not a starter, we’ve given him 2 clear cut chances to prove himself, and has failed both times. With the season on the line, we can’t risk it, we gotta upgrade in net.

  10. distance7 says:

I wish they’d give Markannen a 3 game stretch where he starts, that seemed to be when Dunham played his best is when he had to prove he was the better goalie if you hadn’t noticed. Dunham has the talent to lead any team, it’s just all in his head.

  11. distance7 says:

If you want Kolzig what about throwing Dan Blackburn in the deal? People don’t seem to be as high on him as they were before, I knew he was injured to start the season but I never kept up with it much. What’s going on with him?

  12. GretzNYR99 says:

    1. Agreed.

    2. Maybe, it’s not surefire. Kovalev couldn’t handle NY the first time around, and I believe that he still can’t handle it, or else he’d be in the high teens in goal scoring, or in the 20’s.

    3. You say that Sather’s staying a while, then it’s bye-bye Sather? Which one is it? I believe it’s bye-bye Sather.

    4. It’s the players and the owner. The players are out of place because Dolan is a know-nothing idiot just like George Steinbrenner. Read my reply above on Dolan, you’ll see what I’m saying, and maybe if other people catch on, they’ll have “Sell the team, Dolan!” chants.

    5. I agree on the not scared to come to the garden and play thing. People WANT to play there now. Dany Heatley, Jarome Iginla, etc… geez.

  13. rojoke says:

If I were George McPhee, and the Rangers wanted both Jagr and Gonchar/Witt, I’d settle for nothing less than Jamie Lundmark, Garth Murray and another player. Given the youth that McPhee gave up to get Jagr, now he’s got to get some of that back in dealing Jagr. And it looks like it’s gonna be at the expense of Slats and the Rangers.

And from what I saw on The Score, it sounded like the trade was done. Then they came back and said that they were in discussions. Maybe somebody in the media, and/or the teams involved, has an itchy trigger finger. Remember the Comrie-to-the-Ducks deal?

  14. rojoke says:

Richter will play again right after Patrick Roy announces he’s coming back to play for the Habs again. He’s just physically unable to perform anymore.

And if you look at recent history, Jagr and any coach don’t mix. Bruce Cassidy, Ron Wilson, Kevin Constantine. He ragged on all of them, and he lasted longer than they did.

  15. GretzNYR99 says:

Good points, I like what you’ve had to say here.

I agree, to get Witt and Kolzig, which I do think Slats is pushing for, he’ll have to throw in Lundmark and Murray. Lundmark will never get his chances in NY, and I feel bad for him, I’d like to see him traded so he can make something of himself. I think Lundmark, Murray, Poti, Kovalev (salary eaten), Hlavac, Malakhov (salary eaten), and Dunham should go for Jagr, Witt, Gonchar, and Kolzig. Its probably unrealistic, but who knows.

  16. GretzNYR99 says:

I know Richter won’t play, it was a cry for help though… hehe.

Difference here between them and Sather… Sather is a big time future HOF coach and GM, and is the coach and GM of the Rangers. Jagr won’t pull his shit with him.

  17. GretzNYR99 says:

I agree, it is all in his head, but Markkanen has had that 3 game stretch, he had more than a 3 game stretch when Dunham was injured, and then a few games later after Dunham came back and couldn’t play, Markkanen was played another 4 times in a row and went 2-2.

  18. defenestrate says:

    Not again!

  19. GretzNYR99 says:

It was only a matter of time.

  20. defenestrate says:

If you get Jagr, can we have Fulton Reed and Kenny Wu?

  21. Beckfan5 says:

Um, isnt Sather already in the hall?

  22. RangerSteve says:

Okay let’s look at this past eh 3 months or so in NY…

    1-Fassel is fired

2-Layden is fired, Thomas comes in makes trades to turn the Knicks around, and fires Chainey to bring in Lenny Wilkins..

3-Soon to be…Sather makes his last minute pleas to get this done while Dolan magically gets involved and brings Keenan in to take over for all 3 of Sather’s positions. Sounds stupid, but this is the NY Circus we’re talking about. I’m embarassed about this team, it’s the first time I honestly can say that in 19 years of my life/being a Ranger fan.

  23. RichterFan says:

I tatally agree, As both a yankee and rangers fan I know all about the presence of the owners. I’ve been trying to post an article about Dolan for awhile now. Dolan is an asshole who needs to step aside. He has to remember that it all starts and ends with him.

  24. RichterFan says:

I think all of the ranger fans are too

  25. Beckfan5 says:

I love the we part. Its like your coaching staff made the decision to give him those two starts. And by the way, what is two starts? Dunham has had the whole season so far to prove that he cant be the #1, and youve give Markkennen a lousy 2?

  26. GretzNYR99 says:

Thank you, someone who sees it the way I do, we’re few and far between, man.

  27. GretzNYR99 says:

Ok, so now I have to be literal in everything I say. SATHER AND THE STAFF gave him 2 CHANCES not starts, but Chances.

    1. When Dunham was injured the first time around.

    2. After the back-and back with Toronto, Dunham stayed out 4 more games and Markkanen played all 4 of them, couldn’t do it then either.

Keep your blind faith in Markkanen as a starter, he’s not. Great backup though.

  28. GretzNYR99 says:

Sure, Dean Porter and Charlie Conway too.

  29. GretzNYR99 says:

Can’t have one bash brother and not the other.

  30. GretzNYR99 says:

Yeah, I’m rather embarrassed to see Jagr come here… we have to resort to this to try and make the playoffs, and probably fail doing so…

  31. Beckfan5 says:

I wouldnt compare Dolan to Stienbrenner. Dolan knows shit about hockey and has admit that in the past while Stienbrenner has build several World Champions over the past 25 years.

  32. Beckfan5 says:

I just hate if when fans speak like their apart of the team. One of my friends dose that and I hate it. It sounds stupid. “We need to go out and get so and so this off season, were gonna win it all, ect. ect. blah blah blah.” But you never hear a fan say, ” we suck this year “, its always they suck.

Sorry bro, just a pet peve of mine, big time.

  33. TC_4 says:

Everyone is going to hate me for saying this……if Jagr goes to NY, and is teamed with Lindros…..LOOK OUT!!! Now, this deal makes sense if Brendan Witt is thrown in. Nedved(dump some salary back) and Tyutin. Nedved for Jagr is salary dumping, and Tyutin is one of the best defensive prospects in the game.

  34. Bishop7979 says:

I think that if this happens, and to me its a big if, it will include at least 4 named players, and perhaps one prospect.

The rangers need a defensman if they even want to pretend that they can make the playoffs. They need Witt, not Gonchar.

The Rangers already have Leech, Poti and Bouchard, they dont need anouther offensive minded blue liner. Besides the only two people I really feel are safe in the washington organization are Gonchar and Bondra. They are the face of the team, have been for a number of years. Trading them, during a losing season, is PR suicide for the team.

    So what do I see?

Caps, Witt, Jagr, Pick or kip miller.

NYR Kovie, Carter, and one of Tjutin, Moore, or Murray

I know that people will say that the rangers would be over paying in the deal, but. . .

if the caps are getting rid of Jagr, they are going to want a scoring winger back. Lang is the NHL leading scorer, he played his best games with Kovalev on his wing.

also, the rangers already have too many wingers as is. if carter is getting 3rd/4th line minutes (one of the reasons he is struggling, i mean he was getting 1st line minutes in edm.) then they dont have room for both kovalev and jagr.

plus kovalev is a UFA at seasons end,and after what looks like a possible sub 20 goal season theres no guarrentee that he’ll be back.

as for why carter would be involved. well as its been said (numerous times) carter is, and probably always will be, in the doghouse in new york. he’s a spare part, he doesnt really seem wanted. he’s a throw in that also helps ease the burden of adding jagr and witts contract.

why one of the young guys. for the future, Kovalev is a UFA at years end, carter i think is in an option year (correct me if I’m wrong) at least they would have one strong prospect that could develop into something a year or so down the road when Kovalev and Carter are gone.

finally i’ll answer the kip miller question. . . why?

well basically he is Paxil for Jagr.

“Jagr goes runnin for the shelter of a Jagrs little helper. ” I hope to never parody a Stones’ song again on this site, but its late and these things happen.

anyways Jagr always drags Kip the towel boy Miller around where ever he plays. Miller is like a parasite the lives off of jagrs waste products. The only reason the caps signed him for the grand rapid griffins was to make jagr happy, if jagr goes so does miller.

And I’m sorry but you dont put lindros and Jagr together. they wont mesh at all. you put the miller/jagr symbiote with nedved (he and jagr played together for a season in pittsburgh and messed nicely. Nedved had like 98 points jagr had like 120 i believe.)

anyways attack if you wish jackels but thats my opinion.

  35. GretzNYR99 says:

Steinbrenner isn’t that knowledgable about baseball, he’s just a hardass who goes out and gets the biggest names available, and in Baseball it works because you contribute to the team individually, unlike hockey.

  36. jacosta says:

It’s interesting to get a new yorkers opinion. I hate Steinbrenner for doing what he has done to baseball but its true that they run these teams for their ego. they should just open their wallet and let the GM’s runthe show

  37. Byzz33 says:

    Okay now…

One american radio station speculates the arrival of Jagr and NY and everybody is jumping on it. Exactly 2 minutes after the news, another radio station says that Sather denies AGAIN this trade.

If NY they wanted him, he would already been traded. Rangers are looking for d-men, and not especially Gonchar. Let’s use our creativity on other subjects, because after 817,923 comments and rumors about the Rangers this year, nothing has happened yet.

  38. nskerr says:

Let me get this straight, the Rangers are without Poti, DeVries and Kasparitis and they still want Jagr? Maybe the fans with the “FIRE SATHER” chant the other night were right.

  39. Sands says:

Kovelav and Carter are not both going for jagr and witt…. sorry buddy.. thats not happening. If anything Kovalev has thebest chance staying if a deal for jagr happens. They want to team them up on the PP again…. that would be half the point of this deal.

  40. lordstanley94 says:

There are two HIGE points I would like to bring up. First… is Jagr damaged goods? He always seems to be hurt, or sick. And the second and more important point, how will we pay him? Sure Cablevision has BIG BUCKS, but what happens next year when there is a salary cap at 40 or 50 million, and we now have Jagr who has something like 5 years at 55 million left on his contract. Is this guys WOTH 25% of your total salary? HELL NO!

  41. GretzNYR99 says:

    Good points.

The health is an issue, but right now, the Rangers need a finisher. I hate to go to this, but it’s a last resort. I don’t think we’ll be screwed by the salary cap, if anything, Jagr being on the team would make us call up younger players due to the fact that we have little cap room with him. So it actually might be a blessing in disguise.

  42. GretzNYR99 says:

I agree for the most part, I don’t think that Washington will get that small of a return, but hey… Sather works his magic and shafts teams that he trades with, Edmonton being the only exception.

  43. GretzNYR99 says:

I’d rather throw Kovalev to them in the deal so that we have one primadonna instead of the both of them.

  44. GretzNYR99 says:

Tell me, what are these forums for?

  45. mikster says:

This gives reason to believe the Rangers are interested in possibly Sergei Gonchar or Brendon Witt.

You missed that part. I’d take Witt any day.

  46. Byzz33 says:

I understand your view, but I prefer a discussion about something a little more official then this. Don’t you think that it’s been too many rumors about Jagr? Sather is not dumb; he’ll work to something that will help his hockey club.

  47. GretzNYR99 says:

I agree, but you’re complaining about, why not just push it aside and not comment then? Your point of view makes sense, but your actions don’t, and they contradict each other. Just don’t let it get to you, could be an even worse and more ridiculous and far out Leafs rumor like Joe Thornton to the Leafs for Antropov, Trevor Kidd, Tellqvist, a bag of pucks, and a bottle of Maple Syrup.

  48. GretzNYR99 says:

It’s alright, I’m just used to speaking that way.

In a way, we are apart of the team. We’re their financial outlet. We come to fill up the seats, buy the memorabilia, and watch them on tv. We’re the ones who keep the faith and keep the fanbase going, keyword there being fanbase. Without a fanbase, a team is just a failing team… ex: Pittsburgh and the southeastern teams. We’re not directly apart of the team, but there’s a link there… I don’t know what to call it…. sentimentally? My mind is blank right now trying to think.

  49. NYR-Rangers says:

I think Jagr is on his way to New York. It’s either he gets there or the Rangers will trade for a defencman. I think they should get Jagr though.

I say get rid of Lindros for him or give them draft picks.
