Joni Pitkanen agrees with the Oil.

According to TSN, Joni Pitkanen has agreed to a 1 year deal worth
$2.4 million. I was expecting a longer term for the contract, but signed pretty cheap and only received a $400,000 raise from last year.

Personally, I think that is price is quite reasonable, especially considering the Oilers really needed an offensive defenseman. But trading Lupul and Jason Smith for someone who could potentially walk away next year could potentially come back to bite them in the A$$.

Not a bad idea if you ask me. A one year deal could make Pitkanen expendable at the deadline if the Oil are out of the playoffs. No one really knows if he's going to bounce back from his subpar season last year. The Oil have a strong offensive defenseman in Souray, so keeping both makes limited sense if Pitkanen flops.

And if I'm not mistaken Pitkanen will still be an RFA after this upcoming season as this will only be his 4th NHL season.

Ok, somebody please explain how Pitkanen has a subpar season. He finished 3rd on his team in points and 1st in assists. Yes his plus minus was bad, but a total of 14 flyers were -11 or worse last year. Umberger was -32, kapanen -21, so why does Pitkanen get the shaft. He scored more points then young defencemen such as Carle, Boumeester, Weber and Bieska. Hes probably the best offensive player on the oilers now, dam trade this guy to the wings id love it

It's subpar in comparison to the previous season where he played less games and had more points. When he plays 19 more games, and scores less goals and points it's seen as a subpar season for a young kid who should have excelled in the new NHL.

He is NOT a ufa next season. The Oilers have his rights for 3 years (incl this one.)

  5. PeterTheGreat21 says:

yea for an offensive defenseman who got to play regularly with forsberg and gagner and get #1 pp time and only score 4 goals? thats bad. He refuses to shoot on the powerplay…

Oh okay, I had no idea.  Thanks for the info!! But this is one thing I have no idea about.  Why is it 3 more years?

  7. FallenApostle says:

He won't meet the requirments to be of UFA status.

  8. thegoalie1976 says:

Because he is still young. You have to be like 27 or something now, or have played in the NHL for may years (7 I think)

the Oilers should pursue Patrick Marleau:

Shawn Horcroff, Matt Greene, Alexei Mikhnov, Oilers' 2nd round pick of 2008 and the Oilers' 3rd round pick of 2009 to San Jose Sharks for Patrick Marleau.

I think this is PART of the reason the Flyers traded him.  He wouldn't committ to a long term deal at reasonable money and they were worried about other clubs tendering him to offer sheets and losing him for nothing.
