I disagree. I think Carter has that ability. He is still VERY young and most players don't develop as fast as a guy like Richards. I think in 2-3 years you will see a MUCH improved Carter! I wouldn't trade him. He has TONS of talent and great skating ability and once he learns to use his size more he will be that much better. He is what 22? It would be a mistake.

The wide-spread notion that Maple Leafs' defenceman Tomas Kaberle loses his no-trade protection this summer is inaccurate. There is a clause in Kaberle's contract that provides the Leafs a window of opportunity to trade him after a season in which the team does not make the playoffs, but it doesn't take effect until there is one year remaining in Kaberle's deal. Or, after the 2009-10 season. As such, Kaberle is in the clear for the next three NHL trade deadlines -- including the 2008 version -- and he can remain with the Leafs at his behest.

Just so all leaf fans know...

If the leafs fail to miss the playoffs once again, there is a time frame during the summer in which Kaberle's NTC becomes void for a short time... so he can override trades now... but later on he won't be able to for a short time...

That pretty much describes Alex Steen as well. Comparing Richards to Carter (both from the '03 draft), Richards is well ahead in development, no doubt about it.

Kabrele said he won't waive his NTC, and I doubt Detroit would be looking to add expensive long term contracts like McCabe or Kubina... maybe Hal Gill though.

I hope they keep him, but I think he has only a limited no trade clause. Leafs can deal him in the offseason if they miss the playoffs.
