Keen on Keane?

38-year-old veteran forward Mike Keane has been invited to attend the Toronto Maple Leaf’s training camp.

If he accepts the offer to attend camp, Keane would have to fight for his place on the Maple Leafs roster.Keane’s agent says the two sides have been talking, but no formal contract has been offered yet.

A good defensive forward, good leader, and Stanley Cup winner with Montreal, Colorado, and Dallas, Keane could help ease some of the leadership that was lost when the likes of Roberts and Nieuwendyk walked away. But in terms of his on-ice contributions, he’d be more similar to Tom Fitzgerald.

Apparently, John Ferguson Jr. and Mike Keane grew up together and played minor hockey together in Winnipeg.

And your lack of bias is amazing!

  2. TheHead says:

Keane would add that veteran leadership that Toronto needs more right now with the departures of Roberts, Nieuwendyk and Fitzgerald. Keane would keep everyone honest and playing hard. The leafs would be smart if they picked up Thomas too.

Also, Leafs are the most interested of any team in the league at trying to acquire Martin Biron from Buffalo. According to rumors the Leafs would send Nik Antropov, and Ken Klee and possibly prospect Steffan Kronwall to Buffalo for Martin Biron and Jay McKee.

What the hell is Fergy doing signing all these old geezers? I thought it was supposed to be a youth movement in toronto. “Hey Fergy, the guy u just invited is 38 u retard”

  4. leafs_r_a_joke says:

why dosent jfj sign messier and trade for chelios

  5. Leaf_fans_can_blow_me says:

I hear that mark messier is still available. The leafs should go after him.

  6. Hollywood666 says:

The Leafs are in dire need of players who are defensively responsible, but why wouldn’t they go for someone younger (Cooke?) so they could actually plan SOMEWHAT for the future, since they’ve purged their drafts and prospects over the last 5 years?

  7. Hollywood666 says:

That would be a good trade for T.O., but I’m sure that like 95% of the Leafs trade rumours, there’s little truth to it.

  8. TheHead says:

I saw it posted on a website, a couple weeks ago!

  9. Hollywood666 says:

If it’s on a blog, I guess I’ll go order my Leafs’ Biron jersey.

    Simple answer to that one:

    $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $

  11. Scottman75 says:

Seriously though, there will be a reasonable amount of free agents next year to shore the team up. If JFJ does not do anything next year, then start asking for blood.

  12. 89AlexanderMogilny89 says:

No kidding.I guess being an Oilers fan does have its benefits…not having a clue being one of them.

  13. TheCoach says:

So where are Wellwood and Steen gonna play? I guess they’ll be stuck on the farm waiting to be inevitably dealt for someone at the deadline because the Leafs will be under the delusion that they could win a cup with a “veteran roster.”

No offense to Mike Keane, Mariusz Czerkawski or Steve Thomas, but these guys will be taking spots of younger players and stunting their development, and they probably won’t produce anymore than Steen or Wellwood could.

  14. TheCoach says:

Problem is, all of those player that the Leafs were supposed to go after next year, are being locked up to longterm deals. And I can guarantee that more will be signed to extensions in January.

Hossa, Iginla, Thornton, Pronger, Lecavalier, etc are all already off of the market. Muckler has already said that as soon as January rolls around, he’ll be negotiating extensions with both Chara and Redden. I’m sure other teams will be doing the same.

If JFJs plan was to wait until next off-season and then sign some young stars, I think it was a big mistake.

Mike Keane was never a cancer in any dressing room. A player who captained the Habs for several years. Find me comments from Habs fans that state otherwise..backup what you’re saying.

Is Czerkawski a good guy in the dressing room? I think even you would have to agree that he isnt.

Keane’s a great player he’s a good fourth liner kinda guy, but he’s a real ass. don’t let the press get ahold of him in toronto, they’d tear him a new one cause he has NO IDEA how to handle PR.

More to come if you would like….

  17. Kraut182 says:

I like Keane, I agree that he could provide some veteran leadership and kill penalties and etc. etc. … but I’d rather the Leafs just started to give some of the young guys (Stajan, Wellwood, Steen) time and stop with the veteran’s for the minimum acquisitions for now.

  18. skidragoon says:

Toronto does not need as much youth as you say, if we did not change the roster we had today for the next 3 years assuming all players resigned wed have only lost 2 or 3 players to retirement and if you go 5 years ahead the same numbers.

  19. habfan1160 says:

Because he is Rejan Houle. His tenure with the club reminded me of the early Middle Ages after the fall of Rome, a desparate, desolate, forboding, dark, and depressing epoch.

  20. Leafnation9 says:

Lets sign Guy Carbaneau and Pat Verbeek also

    It worked for the Stars

  21. dcz28 says:

Not that i want to get into that debate but Resmo112 said that Keane was not good with the press he did not say anything about being a locker room cancer or bad with his teamates

I love how the Leaf fans come out of the woodwork when someone makes a negative remark about their team. The Leafs are building a team for this year, a team of “washed-up” veterans, when they should be getting younger and building for the future. Every year, the Leafs buy up free-agents and trade away young prospects with POTENTIAL, YES I SAID POTENTIAL. So excuse me as I yawn at the POTENTIAL of the Leafs contending this year or for the next few. So many risks and what-ifs on this Leafs team, and chances are so slim of contending. And as far as the comment about how Leaf’s fans want all other teams in Canada to win cups, yada yada yada……I never said I don’t want to see the Leafs win. I JUST DON’T THINK THEY ARE BUILDING THEIR TEAM IN THE RIGHT WAY. They are getting older, slower, and taking risks with injuries………..But think whatever you want………………As far as my Oilers go, Chris Pronger and Mike Peca are physical players, injuries occur. Yeah, they may get injured again, but they are still on top of their game, despite the comments about Peca. We have lots of solid YOUNG players that had good seasons in 2003-04 and thru the lockout, lots of guys on the up-swing. Our goalie tandem is young and unproven, BUT IF YOU WATCHED THE OILERS IN 2003-04 after Tommy Salo left town, these two were great. They only had half a season, but both Markannen and Conklin are talented goalies. I totally believe they are better than THE EAGLE at this point in his career …………Edmonton with it’s youth and yes, POTENTIAL can have a great season. Again, I NEVER SAID THEY WOULD CONTEND FOR A CUP, but they will have a great season………..I just hate to see the Leafs build with veterans, and have a rotating door of veterans each year. Chemistry gets lost in that shuffle, and their veterans haven’t been on top of their games for a few years, and yes are injury prone………………………….DON’T BE SO FRICKIN SENSITIVE. I AM JUST SAYING WHAT I THINK. IF YOU DON’T AGREE, THEN GREAT. THAT IS WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT A HOCKEY FORUM. YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU THINK.

Leafs are interested in Shane Doan and Marian Gaborik now that Zetterberg is out of the picture according to rumours both teams want Aki Berg, Alex Steen, Kyle Wellwood, Nik Antropov and Alexei Ponikarovsky in return.

  25. o2baleaf2005 says:

I agree enough is enough, let the kids play. St. John’s was an exciting team last year in the AHL.

  26. LeafsJaysRapsBillsManU says:

Not that I disagree at all with what you’re saying, I just want to comment on your Matt Cooke idea…definitely would be a good fit, but I’m almost positive he’s restricted…like what you’re thinking though.

  27. shawn_habs says:

exactly. the media and your teammates are two entirely different entities. dont see anything about a “cancer” anyhow.

  28. shawn_habs says:

i can see aki berg for gaborik.

    yeah right.
