TSN has reported that if the Leafs dont get Kovalev, Kapanen can be next player on GM Pat Quinn wish list. The Leafs tryed to make a deal for Kapanen before Kovalev became available.GM Jim Rutherford inteads to let Sami Kapanen and goaltender Arturs Irbe before the trading deadline. My Opinion if the Leafs do get shut out of the Kovalev deal that Kapanen will be the best person to get both because his skill and his cost(3m)which can help the Leafs get an D-man which they need. And Quinn does say that he will try his best in the trade market.

Yeah when Toronto fans and media smell blood, it is all over.

Kovie needs to get dealt. Come hell or high water. If they don’t deal him, it will be years before we see the penguins in the playoffs again.

  3. guinsfan4life says:

Actually Trojan man I don’t think they can afford to pay him regardless. Did you see the game last night?? How empty was the building?? Some 3,000 below capacity?? If they don’t make the playoffs, they will be lucky to break even for the year. Then come out next year and pay him 8mil. per year?? Who will we have to get rid of so we can afford him?

Also, I think Antropov and White is MORE than enough… Where have you been Robert in the last while, have you not seen Antropov, have you not seen White in the Olympics?? COME ON…Kovie is almost one dimensional…

It’s funny. If you follow all of the posts about the Leafs on this site, you’d get the impression that Pat Quinn is trying to acquire the rest of the league.

Will someone please explain this “you need to trade and sign every big name out there to be successful” philosophy to me? Quinn’s done a pretty good job of putting together a gritty collection of talent. I think its been agreed on by everyone here that they have no one w/ any trade value except for some untouchables, so how are they supposed to get Satan or Kovalev w/o giving up the team? Kovalev, Kapanen, Lindros, Holik, Amonte…these players aren’t going to make you a championship team. In fact, they’ve combined for what? 2 Cups? Both by Holik?

The Leafs have signed Mogilny and Belfour in recent years, both solid additions. And didn’t they sign or trade for Roberts recently? Its not like they haven’t added anything to their team. Those are three key players.

They also have a history of giving up talent before it properly develops (read: Modin, Sullivan), so are you sure making a thousand trades is going to help them out much?

I’m personally of the philsophy of using free agency and trades to shore up weaknesses in a team, to fill in the cracks. Not to create your team’s identity (except maybe for goaltenders). That may sound hypocritical, being a Wings fan, but outside of the Shanny deal, what huge trade or signing have we made? (excluding the aforementioned goaltenders)

Trades and free agency are best used in moderation and with careful consideration. Talk to the Rangers, Flyers, Avs, Caps, 99 Wings, or 02 Stars about that one.

Kovie is also in the top 5 in scoring…a porven NHLer…Antropov 40 points at best. White…is too small…hard chance to make the NHL…4 million can be found anywhere.

Im hoping the wings of kovalev will land somewhere else. He may be useful for a playoff hunt however, come next season.. (if im to understand he is to be under arbitration rather then free agency, i could be wrong) I see a whole Alexi Yashin situation brewing in Toronto.. holding ouit until the cows come home. So for some playoff work, in return for some less egotistical youngsters with better loyalty and defensive skills, The trade from that standpoint , is a wash. The league needs to remove players such as this, bure, etc…

Kovalev won the cup with the rangers

  14. OldTimeHockey_28 says:

What has Kovalev done to show that he is a Bure, or a Yashin. If anything he has given everything he could to a shit poor team and continues to be at the top of the league in points.

  15. OldTimeHockey_28 says:

    Good One…????

But honestly. How is a team that is giving up players getting robbed. I’m sure the leafs would have to give up some talent to get Kappanen. Why they would want too, i’m not sure.

Just saying, don’t knock the Leafs youngsters. They’re abundant and looking DAmn good.
