HTR.com members report:cementhead reports:

The Arizona Republic is reporting that Nedved may be on the trading block. Speculation is that he would go to an eastern team. I, however, would disagree with what they claim. (Sorry for so many Coyote articles in a short amount of time, but rumors come when they want to come – not when we want them to.)

The Republic stated, “Petr Nedved’s days with the Coyotes appear to be numbered,” and “don’t be surprised if the Coyotes trade the veteran center, most likely to an Eastern Conference team, for defensive help.”

Here is the problem – Nedved wouldn’t even be taken on waivers. He has only been healty enough to play in 24 games this year. In that time he has 2 goals and 8 assists – and that is with plenty of time with some of Coyotes most talented players. He is making $2.2M (Please correct me if I’m wrong but I think he is in year 1 of a 2 year contract). Last night he was a healthy scratch for the first time in his career.

If teams don’t feel Andreychuck is worth $800,000 or Mogilny is worth $3.5, then Nedveds 10 pts surely aren’t worth $2.2M – especially given his 3 injuries already this season.

Secondly, I think the Coyotes would rather find the scoring center they lack than a dman. Nedved didn’t fill that star center role very well. Although Lundmark has done as well as could be expected of him, and Comrie does alright, they are not a long term fit between Doan and Nagy. As for defence, O’Donnell only has one more game on his suspension before he is back and Morris will be back after olympic break. Jones and Spiller, not the best solutions, can pick up slack until then. Remember Phoenix found themselves with too many dmen at the beginning of the season and then traded off Hulse and Tanabe to widdle themselves to where they wanted to be. They didn’t do that just to have to go and find another.

Anyway, I will let you be the judge. I have included a link for the trade speculation article, but personally I think they are out to lunch.

Laus723 reports: According Sportsnet.ca, Roberto Luongo is going to be offered a six year 30 million dollar deal by the Florida Panthers.

***mikster: I may be able to get a little information on that. If I do, stay tuned.***

Gretzkin reports on Drug Testing:

This Sunday, the NHL will begin the Random Drug Testing.

Testing players throughout the League as many as 2 times throughout the rest of the season, as part of the new CBA.

We’ve all thought that we had a relatively clean sport when it comes to performance enhancers, compared to other pro sports, but at the same time, we’ve all heard the stories in the Playoffs, as to what measures some players will go to to be able to make it into the lineup, after minor, nagging, and sometimes serious injuries.

Wayne Gretzky was quoted at the beginning of the year as saying that he had never seen it in the game while he was around, but noted that the community of players “using”, wouldn’t have been extremely public about it.

You’d have to question some of the Goons out there, and some of the guys dropped quite a few pounds in between the last season and the current one.

One NHLer came out publicly recently, admitting to using steroids at the beginning of his career. Sorry people, I can’t remember who it was.

Anyhow, I’d been wondering what was happening with that, but apparently the NHLPA wanted to take some time to learn the boys as to what they can take, and what they can’t (And perhaps give them a head start to clean out the systems).

Anyways, look for some drug controversy in the next few months…

The player that had admitted to steroid use was the Buffalo Sabres tough guy Andrew Peters..

  2. Rickler says:

    AKA Jose Canseco

  3. guinsfan4life says:

How about Dick Tarnstrom or Ric Jackman for Nedved? Or does Phoenix actually want someone in return that has a heartbeat??

  4. OldGoalie says:

You don’t want Nedved. He’s too fragile, too dependent upon playing with high-caliber wingers, has at least some history of conflict with Craig Patrick (the reason the Pens traded him to the Rangers for Kovalev was a nasty contract dispute, if I remember correctly), and is neither the most disciplined nor the most defensively conscious player in the world. But I would give them Tarnstrom plus LeClair or maybe even Recchi for Derek Morris (and a prospect or draft choice if they’re getting Recchi).

Gives Phoenix an offensive defenseman…plus a veteran forward with some scoring ability. Not bad additions for a team that’s having trouble scoring, is a little on the inexperienced side, and is flirting with not making the playoffs. Gives the Pens a competent defenseman who’s still only 27…and anytime the words “competent” and “defenseman” are in the same sentence, the Pens should be interested.

Might be a little pricey for Phoenix, though (even if they’re otherwise inclined to do something like that, which I don’t know that they would be). Morris is making $2.6 million…Tarnstrom is at $1.6 million, LeClair is at $2.1 million and Recchi is at $2.28 million…so the deal would cost the Coyotes about a half million bucks this year (a $1 million or so difference for half a season).

  5. SensDude says:

btw about the habs, Huet will be in goal for a third straight game.

I heard Radio Energie that Koivu could be on the trade block and could go play with his best friend Selanne.

Nedved coudl help a team like Carolina, on the third line.

  6. mmatras says:

Rocky Thompson also admitted to steroid use. He had a few memorable weeks with the flames where he made the front page of the Calgary Sun each morning because of his on-ice fights, taunts, and celebrations. He was later involved with the Oilers organization, though I’m not sure he played any games with the big club. He was part of the AHL Edmonton Road Runners last year. He admitted to steroid use at the end of summer/early fall.

I really hope we don’t see too much drug use in the NHL. The players have had time to know the tests are coming, so if anyone gets caught at this point they’re doubly stupid for a) taking them in the first place and b) still getting caught when they’ve had a prolonged period of tiem to clean up.

I’m concerned though about the drug use that goes on in the major-junior level of the game. What checks and measures are in place to monitor that? Does the CHL have a testing policy?

  7. OldGoalie says:

If he’s still a decent faceoff guy, he has a fairly good skill set for a third line…but I don’t know if he has the mentality to become a defense first player. Unless he’s matured a lot in the last several years (which isn’t impossible), my guess is that he does not.

  8. yesca22 says:

I’d love to get Nedved back in a Pens jersey, if for no other reason than I’d be able to pull my Nedved game jersey out of storage. I got it for my birrthday and then he soon got traded! Barely got used! LoL!

  9. Tonio says:

Has anyone heard anthing else about the rumor posted on TSN about Dallas offering Martin Skoula for Vyacheslav Kozlov in Atlanta? http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=150638&hubname=nhl

  10. Flyer_Dman says:

Don’t be sorry that you are reporting about a team that isn’t the leafs, flyers, canadiens, bruin, wings, or lanche. The more the merrier.

  11. cementhead says:

UPDATE on Nedved speculation. This is again from the Arizona Republic and seems to be pure speculation but I thought I would share it anyway.

“The Yotes made Nedved a healthy scratch last night in Buffalo and, ironically, the team responded with one of its best performances of the year. Nedved could be on his way to Pittsburgh, Atlanta or Boston and it will likely be sooner rather than later. Head coach Wayne Gretzky would be wise to keep Nedved off the ice until a deal can be made. Nedved has been the biggest disappointment on the Coyotes this season.”

I don’t know how closely tied John Gambadoro

is to the Coyotes but he seems to think PITTSBURGH, ATLANTA, or BOSTON.

    Guess we’ll see.

  12. neilios says:

I think Nedved will get traded to the Czek team I mean the Rangers with Nagy I think both these guys are Czek players????This is how the deal will go down.

    To Coyoteys-Rucchin,Prucha,Poti,and Montoya

    TO Rangers-Nagy and Nedved

What does everyone think????I think its a fair deal all around.

  13. robinson19 says:

TSN .ca say the Caps might be interested in Ribeiro as a set up man for Ovechkin.

    To Habs: Kolzig

    To Caps: Ribeiro +?

    To Habs: Bertuzzi

    To Nucks: Theodore

  14. pratt25 says:

I think you are nuts….they won’t trade Prucha and Montoya….we already had Nedved once and he didn’t pan out.

  15. wingerxxx says:

Petr Nedved is the last thing that Pittsburgh needs right now.

  16. wingerxxx says:

The Rangers won’t be making any major deals unless there is a big injury, or unless they can get a power play defenseman in a good deal. Prucha will NOT be traded. No chance. Montoya will also be off limits unless something jawdropping comes along, as he is still a very good prospect. Sather let Nedved go at the deadline of the 03-04 season, he’s not going to take him back at his current salary. Especially since Nedved’s tenure as a Ranger ended in complete failure. Besides, if you are Gretzky, you do not want to give up Nagy for anything right now.

  17. Labrosse says:

f*ck kolzig he’s 35 years old and he cost 5M$ a years!!! bring dannis

  18. wingerxxx says:

If O’Connell trades for Nedved, he deserves to be fired more than anyone has deserved to be fired in a long, long time. I don’t see why Atlanta would take him, as they are fine at center. Nedved would drive Therrien absolutely insane in Pittsburgh. I don’t like either of those three teams as a destination.

  19. Labrosse says:

    tarnstrom or jackman vs nedved

yeah great idea the pens have a great D they can give anybody on that D and it would still be dominating like it’s doing right now. And they are missing veteran that are slowing down, nedved would be great with young and fast recchi leclair and lemieux

    GREAT IDEA

  20. TheRussianEvolution says:

Wasn’t Nedved signed before the lockout?

  21. muckies says:

Nagy is the man, no trading him.

I saw him on a line with Tanguay in Halifax burying pucks and making 5 guys every shift look slow and unskilled.

    Real Sick. Nasty.

No gettin’ rid of the Nagynator

  22. Hockey_Fan_99 says:

Throw LeClair in with Tarnstrom and id do it! give the pens some salary dump too!

  23. thinice987 says:

I can def. see the Penguins trading either Tarnstrom or Jackman for Nedved. The Penguins really only have one center and even when Lemieux comes back the Penguins would prefer for him to play wing. Nedved needs to play with skilled players and I could see him playing with Lemieux and Rechi.

And if Nedved has another year on his contract, great because the Penguins had a hell of a time trying to sign a center this year. No one wants to play behind Crosby and Malkin and they would probably have the best third line center in the league if they got him.

Nedved can play, he just needs some help.

Unlike Jackman, please please please trade him. He is so lost in his own zone. Tarnstrom is much better than Jackman and I think they can get more for Tarnstrom when they actually trade him.

    Just my thoughts.

  24. laserman says:

I think a 12 step program is in your near future…

  25. wingerxxx says:

I used to lovingly refer to Nedved as “The Corpse.” Why any team would trade for this guy right now is beyond me, and when you take his injury problems this year into account, it just seems more implausible. He still has a beautiful wrister, but he has lost a step, and is not that versatile anymore. Maybe if a team was absolutely desperate for a center, I could see him being plucked off waivers. That is a big fat maybe. I honestly wouldn’t bother with him. He never was a number one center, he just doesn’t have the consistency. And he plays with about as much grit and passion as Yashin. His injuries this year aren’t his fault though, it’s just a string of really bad luck. If the Yotes can trade Nedved for anything, they deserve to be commended.

  26. neilios says:

Nedved sucks he is washed up the guy really wasnt that good in the 1st place and he is the biggest pussie in the NHL too so that doesnt help either.

  27. habswinthecup-again says:

How about Ribiero for Witt? maybe throw in a 5th rd pick.

  28. SabresFan220 says:

Yep, the papers were calling him “Andro” Peters for awhile. At the time the steriod he used was a component of a supplement he used. And I think the paper said that it was not declared illegal by the league until this season, so until this year he was free to continue using it.

Now of course he has stopped using it, but I certainly think he showed some guts being the only guy willing to admit to it. We all know there were other guys who used steroids, and I’ll bet we could all throw around names other than Andrew Peters that were just as guilty.

  29. cementhead says:

Yes, maybe that maybe that means that he has only this year left and would be a little more enticing. Can anyone confirm it?

  30. oldtimehockey says:

Theodore for Gonchar ? Both struggling. Inter conference i know.. but both seem to need a shake up. Pittsburgh needs a # 1. Both cost the same roughly…. Gonchar has been somewhat of a bust but could rejuvinate the MTL D. and Theo… well lets hope he gets his form back for whoever gets him

  31. Hockey_Fan_99 says:

    Nagy is from Slovakia

  32. mmatras says:

I think I finally have an idea for a REALISTIC trade the Oilers could pursue. Devin Dubnyk (G w/ the Kelowna Rockets), Cross, Ulanov and a 2nd/3rd round pick to the Penguins for Fleury. This stops the financial bleeding in Pittsburgh, gives them two veteran D men (not amazing, but solid 5/6 guys for most teams…likely 2/3 guys in Pittsburgh), a pick, and a blue chip goalie who’s a couple years from having to be paid well. For Pittsburgh that also lets them save face by not further stumping the growth of a great goalie because they can’t afford to pay him (and instead pay Gonchar $5M a year for the next 5 years). I know its a pipe dream…but if only…

  33. Trickst says:

wouldn’t this futher ruin an already ruined pens defensive core? might as well – they’ll suck forever until they move cities

  34. Trickst says:

EVEN A SANE PERSON CAN SEE GONCHAR IS HIGHLY OVERVALUED. NOBODY WOULD PAY 5M A YEAR FOR A 4TH FORWARD. HE SUCKS. (a lot more than theodore and the habs suck)

  35. 24_cups_and_counting says:

Montreal needs a defenseman not another forward.

  36. nova_scotia123 says:

I think Nedved will get traded to the waiver wire. But Gretzky likes this guy for some reason. So I think they will keep him for defensive purposes if he doesn’t get put on waivers.

  37. OldGoalie says:

Um…never going to happen. Fleury is as close to an untouchable as you can get based purely on talent, and he’s one of the most popular players on a team that’s attendance-conscious as well. I have wondered to myself if they might trade Fleury once or twice…but getting a couple of retread 5/6 defensemen and a goalie who’s behind Fleury in development is NOT an acceptable return for giving up a potential franchise goalie…and having watched him play behind an awful defense, he’s every bit as good as advertised. If he were to go anywhere, it would in all likelihood have to be because of one of those trade offers that you literally cannot refuse.
