Leafs Acquire May

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=262278&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_main

Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Brad May from the Anaheim Ducks for a conditional 6th round pick.

The team also sent down Nikolai Kulemin to the Marlies to make room.

May is very familiar with Burke having been acquired for now the 3rd time by Burke. He will add some leadership, toughness and character to the team.

It was a no brainer Burke would pursue a player who play a physical game and willing to drop the gloves. While trading yet another draft pick seems to make little sense, it can only be assumed that this hole in the roster had to be filled by any means.

Despite the demotion, I really like Kulemin. Good skills, but just needs more seasoning.

The other rookie forward, Grabovski, clearly has been a pleasant addition. Reminds me of Sergei Berezin, a guy I always liked when he played here, even though he wouldn’t pass the puck.

1993 Smyth Division semi-final, Game 4. May Day!

A game Buffalo fans won’t soon forget.

  3. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

agreed. Burke believes May will improve the team by A. being a factor on the ice and B. providing leadership for the rest of the team.

Burke made the argument earlier that you cant trade away the team because the team has to be competitive every night (as thats why the fans pay the ticket price). Thus its obvious Burke has no intention of de-improving this team.

One has to wonder if Burke isn't trying to get in this team into the playoffs next season. he aquired Kunitz, Pronger, Selanee, Niedermayer, Moen, Beauchemin all 3 years (or fewer) before winning the cup. He could (maybe only in my mind) be confident enough in himself that he thinks he can get this team to compete for the cup in 3 years (without the draft).

Hopefully Nonis will get him to favour the draft approach.

  4. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

    Another valid point.

    5th for Hollweg
    3rd for Mayers
    now 6th for May

    look how that turned out?

The fact is that toughness, and leadership are no substitute for talent.

  5. mojo19 says:

It's true. You need the right mix of both to be succesful. Especially if you can get all those qualities in one player, which is what makes a guy like Iginla so amazing.

Well put.  Too bad it is freezing in Toronto right now, we spot him quite a bit on golf courses down here in Southern California.  I am sure he will miss it, not to mention his handicap may take a hit.

  8. assman says:

    2-0 already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  we're losing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you call this a team? we suck, we smell like dog breth. whats brad may doing? finger looks like a jackass. antropov skates like he crapped his pants. trade them all. or put them on wafers

  9. leafy says:

Sounds good, but you're trading my Ian White.  He's actually one of the better Leafs this year. A pleasant surprise.

Also, you're keeping Jeff Finger.  Some people like Finger, but I'm not a fan at all (I actually agree with Assman below, yikes!)

  10. cam7777 says:

Wow, tonight's game is the perfect example of how not to referee a game. The refs have no idea whatsoever what they are doing out there. The favoritism in that building is absolutely insane as well. It's not even funny actually. Bouillion is the biggest panzy ass piece of garbage I've seen in a while. Tries to maul Niklas Hagman, than cowers away once Hagman doesn't have his back to him and face to the ice. Good thing May just kicked the crap out of him. Hopefully Kostopoulos and Sergei Kostitsyn get a piece of May or Mayers by the end of the night too.

  11. lafleur10 says:

your gutless cheapshot artists are lucky laraque isn't in the lineup! may and mayers and deveaux one of them would've got an ass whipping from the current heavyweight champ! next time we meet if laraque is in the lineup we'll see how tough those 3 guys are, not one of those guys can beat gorges laraque!it's too bad that you guys have no talent and have to stoop to playing like that and it's showing! but thanks for the easy 2 points i hope you enjoy getting smoked like a cheap cigar!

  12. LeafsNation91 says:

After watching tonights game, I realized Brad May will "Eff Yo Shiz UP"

Also, Andre Deveaux seemed to grow balls playing with him

  13. GoLeafs13 says:

OUR cheap shots!!! how about last game kostopolous' cheap shot or kostyisens?

  14. GoLeafs13 says:

both van ryn and schenn were out for over a month you *****ing loser.

  15. nordiques100 says:

i dont think many of these moves would fly.

while the yotes could use a playoff appearance, i dont know if they can afford to acquire a rental at that price. they really could use more defence help to be honest.

the free agents you suggested are not worth the trouble. peca is way old. he came and went, he's not coming back. i wish people would give up on that. you sign parros, but then he's sitting. why bother then?

by the time the draft rolls around, its doubtful toskala has that worth with the way he's playing.

you also suggest a trade for backman and then let him go. why?

you acquired gionta, he isnt going to sign one year.

newbury is done. i wish people would just forget about this minor leaguer

if kulemin isnt serious about being a leaf and pouts and leaves. i hope the door doesnt hurt him on the way out. we dont need players like that. i tend to think he isnt like that and will actually work his way back. he has skill but seriously he needed a kick in the pants.

this is a pretty brutal task for burke as JFJ left us in ruins. not even really the stuff fletcher did can completely make us forget fergie's mess.

  16. LeafsNation91 says:

lafeur10! I can always rely on you for comedy. Laraques, was supposed to bring toughness to the Habs, but he has not done it and thats why he is in the doghouse. They say he's injured, but everyone knows that he is benched. May was the most physical player on the ice tonight, and he would of effed Laraques up if he wasn't injured, cough. BRING LARAQUES! May will eff him up. And that leaves Deveaux, Hollweg, and Mayers to eff him up later. May was brough in to be physical, and he did that, so no way anyone should bash his play tonight. I wouldn't talk about playing dirty, because Montreal is probably the most dirty team this year.

  17. leafy says:

I too would be shocked out of my wits if he Leafs got a 1st rounder for Toskala.  Last year, definitely, but no way this year.

If Kulemin departs, don't be surprised to see Burke steer clear of Russian picks at the draft, where possible.

  18. cam7777 says:

yea, at this point we need to ride toskala out and hope he turns it around to regain some of that trade value.  even if he has a strong final 30 games of the season, everyone will forget about this terrible year.  if he doesn't turn it around though, and we can't get any value for him, i suggest holding off on pogge for one more year.  Go sign Fernandez or someone like that to a huge 1-2 year deal.  Give Toskala something to think about.  I think he'll come out with a fury given a legitimate threat to his number one goaltender status.  pogge is too young to be that threat.  he knows the management treats him like a baby.  then you simply deal the most valuable of your goaltenders and leave the other to backup Pogge in the following season/tail end of next season.

although, burke seems to be able to find guys like Hiller and Bryzgalov who come out of nowhere and become dominant backups at cheap cheap prices…so who knows….

  19. arigold says:

How can you cheer for players that fight with visors on?  What a joke.  Listen, beating the Leafs isn't much of an accomplishment these days, so try not to be so *****y.  In this, the Habs last year of their great Bob Gainey rebuild, you guys are still mediocore at best.  You guys will be lucky to crack the second round of the playoffs this year.

By the way, I love watching Habs games when the fans start chanting "OLE".  It reminds me of last year when you guys got all *****y about barely beating the Bruins, right before the Flyers fed 'em their lunch.

Enjoy cheap wins against weaker teams all you want, you guys might as well start rebuilding again, because your fantastic GM has done nothing but build towards the middle of the pack.  The Habs are an AVERAGE team in this league, so try to keep a win over a rebuilding Leafs team in perspective.

    SEASON:

Nik Antropov to PIT for a 1st round pick (Taylor Doherty)

Tomas Kaberle and Jiri Tlusty to PHI for James Vanriemsdyk and a 2nd
(everyone thinks I'm crazy on this one, but whatever, I think Philly can only have so much goal-scoring prowess.  Also, this article : http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/flyers/37132204.html?viewAllLatest=y&text= makes it seem like Holmgren could live without him)

Grabovski and Ponikarovsky to CLB fro Nikita Filatov and a 3rd

Lee Stempniak and Mike VanRyn to PHX for Dan Carcillo, a 2nd and a 4th
(this is highly questionable just considering the Yotes financial status, but otherwise, i think it works: a bit of YOUNG sandpaper for the Leafs, and some affordable young guys for PHX to make a run at the playoffs)

try to deal the likes of mayers, hollweg, bell, etc for whatever late round picks can be had….

    DRAFT:

-Leafs select Brayden Schenn (trade up or down as necessary)

-Vesa Toskala and Jiri Tlusty to PHI for Scott Hartnell and a 2nd in 2010
(more sandpaper for the leafs, more cost saving for the Flyers)

-5th rounder to PIT for Antropov's rights
(resign Antropov for 4 years at 3.825 million)

    FREE AGENCY:

-Sign George Parros, 3 years, 2.7 million

-Sign Manny Fernandez, 2 years, 11 million

-Sign Jay Bouwmeester, 6 years, 33 million

(3 pretty big signings, but if anyone can do it, it's Brian Burke)

    the Team:

James vanRiemsdyk – Matt Stajan – Nikolai Antropov
Scottie Hartnell – Brayden Schenn – Nikita Filatov
Niklas Hagman – Dominic Moore <A> – Jason Blake
Daniel Carcillo – Johnathan Mitchell – George Parros
    (Jamal Mayers)

    Pavel Kubina – Jay Bouwmeester
    Luke Schenn – Ian White
    Jonas Frogren – Jeff Finger
    (Taylor Doherty)

    Manny Fernandez – Justin Pogge

CAP HIT – Approx. 54 million

average team! open your *****ing eyes! we have one of if the the deepest set of prospects in the league! our g.m. has stocked us well and will keep us a contender for years to come! if that idiot burke wants to be successful follow what gainey has done and you guys might be considered contenders in a few years!

  22. leafy says:

Sorry, I meant Adams Division.  The Smythe Division had the west coast teams.

  23. lafleur10 says:

ln91! brad may is a wimp and will fight guys that we can beat and won't fight the laraques, boogard, types in the league! his best days are behind him1 laraque would hand him his ass1 there isn't a laffs player that can beat him! there isn't a player in the league other than maybe boogard that can stand up to laraque! give your head a seriuos shake and wake up aand get a touch of reality! laraque as i said is the toughest guy in the league and the current heavyweight champ amongst the tough guys!

  24. lafleur10 says:

mayers would eff up gorges laraque! now your being stupid! come on! mayers is at best a middleweight! laraque would destroy him! ihollweg the only thing he'd do is hit laraque from behind then run like the coward he is!

    Very Interesting Cam.

I do agree Nik Antropov is worth a 1st rounder, but I do not know where though. I doubt it will be Pittsburgh, but your right on the money with Doherty. he's huge, and would fit in Burke's system nicely. The Leafs should draft a forward with the top pick, and defenceman with second, since Toronto has alright depth in forwards, and only thre defenceman to look at so far.(Vorobiev, Stralman,Schenn)

Your VanRiemsdyk trade is quite intriguing as well. I dunno if the Flyers would do it, but Philly would get a top All-tar defenceman that comes cheap and still under contract, and an interesting prospect to make up for VanRiemsduyk.

I don't like the Coyotes trade because I think WE are the ones who are giving up alot for not alot.

I doubt the bad players will leave.

I know Brayden is Luke's brother and all, but if we did get VanRiemsdyk, why not draft Schroeder, did you see the chemistry between the two at the World Juniors, it was probably the best line in the tournament.

Vesa Toskala probably wont be leaving, and you have Tlusty in their twice.

Bouwmeester wants to go to a playoff team, I doubt were that.

Screw another goaltender that will blow up in our face, its Pogge's time to shine. Everyone should remember, before their was Price, their was Justin Pogge.

Haha, imagine Parros and May togethr, they will eff yo shiz up!

  27. cam7777 says:

yea, you're probably right about the toskala deal.  that wasn't supposed to be tlusty in there, typo.  the point with that one though, is that hartnell could be over priced for the flyers next season, and definitely in the next season, so he could be plucked if we can provide philly with something they need (and they have no goalies on contract next season).  burke seems intent on finding the right amount of grit for his team, and sooner or later he's going to have to look for guys like Hartnell to provide that, instead of aging veterans like May.  Hartnell can score, and hit, fight, etc….

Bouwmeester wants to go to a playoff team, true.  BUT, he also wants to go to a team where hockey matters, and he can have some spot light.  If Burke pulls off a couple of big trades and has a huge draft, there's no doubt that Toronto's stock will have risen substantially in Bouwmeester's eyes.  I could see this getting done despite Bouwmeester's apparent demands.  Keep in mind, he'd probably say anything to get out of Florida.

  28. arigold says:

i admire the fact that you guys aren't shy to dress young players.  But that doesn't necessarily make them all good players.  Most of them are average.

  29. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Funny you should say that as I toyed with which one to trade. At the end of the day Finger (who is not worth 3.5 mil) is what he is, and will always be like that. wheras white doesn't even know what position he's playing, and goes on streaks.  Whites value is high right now, but it could dip to rock bottom in a heartbeat (ala the beginning of the season).

  30. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

"while the yotes could use a playoff appearance, i dont know if they can afford to acquire a rental at that price. they really could use more defence help to be honest."

The yotes NEED a playoff appearance,, they cant survive any more 10000- crowds. Price can be adjusted, but I think the yotes need to pull off a trade like that. The Coyotes defense has been whats saving them IMO, as their biggest problem has been goals. They might go after a PP QB type defenseman though.

"peca is way old. he came and went, he's not coming back."

Role players get better with age…ok thats not true, but they tend to last longer than stars, see detroits roster. Peca could still come in and shape up this teams penalty killing.

"you sign parros, but then he's sitting. why bother then?"

no reason other than his moustache….in all seriousness, when a guy gets injured and you dress that "healthy scratch" he comes in plays 5 minutes and does nothing. At least with Parros you get a fight, or a hit or something.

"by the time the draft rolls around, its doubtful toskala has that worth with the way he's playing."

Agree'd, but I'm banking on him playing better. Maybe a 2nd or 3rd is more appropriate.

"you also suggest a trade for backman and then let him go. why?"

salary cap reasons. the guys a wash, I figured give him a chance to reclaim himself. 90% chance he doesn't, and thus he's let go (10% chance he surprises and is kept on…maybe)

"newbury is done. i wish people would just forget about this minor leaguer"

I liked Newbury…and still do. Takes too many penalties, but plays his heart out.

    "
you acquired gionta, he isnt going to sign one year."

remember you heard it from me first: you will see a lot more big money 1 year deals this summer than ever before.

"if kulemin isnt serious about being a leaf and pouts and leaves. i hope the door doesnt hurt him on the way out."

The habs said that about Grabovski. The fact is, Kulemin may have a better alternative. Its better to keep him on the roster (leafs suck so who cares), and cash in on in when he's a better player, and the leafs are a better team.

"not even really the stuff fletcher did can completely make us forget fergie's mess"

Fletcher was as bad as fergie IMO

  31. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Tough teams are tough from a to z. if laraque misses a games, and the habs get pushed around, its a bad sign.

  32. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

"there isn't a laffs player that can beat him!"

Laraque can't babysit the small meek players on your team. that was evident last night

  33. lafleur10 says:

it's because he wasn't in the line up last night! if he was may and mayers wouldn't have been to eager to fight because laraque is the one guy in the league that would destroy both of them and he would've did it last night had he played then you leafs would be whinnning about not only getting whipped in the game but in the fights too!laraque isn't gutless either and go after the other terams smallest player ala may! he saves it for the true tough guys! b&w the next time we play if laraque is in the lineup for us watch and see just how many leafs will want to fight him! maybe just brad may that's it! if not it'll be a clean game without the cheapshots from both sides!

  34. mojo19 says:

Grabovski is dynamic like Berezin but I think he's a way better playmaker. But you're right there is definitely a comparison there.

  35. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

"if he was may and mayers wouldn't have been to eager to fight because laraque is the one guy in the league that would destroy both of them and he would've did it last night had he played then you leafs would be whinnning about not only getting whipped in the game but in the fights too!l"

probably, but it wouldn't have stopped the leafs from completely out hitting the habs.

"laraque isn't gutless either and go after the other terams smallest player ala may!"

If thats what you think, you haven't seen laraque much. The guys like laraque all resort to cheap shots and fighting smaller players (as few men can match his 250lbs).

Like I said, tough teams have tough players, not 1 goon.

"b&w the next time we play if laraque is in the lineup for us watch and see just how many leafs will want to fight him!"

Deveax will probably take him, and probably lose. Its honour I suppose…..

"if not it'll be a clean game without the cheapshots from both sides!"

Not unless S. Kostytsin is injured
  36. Einz says:

This is such a bad way to look at the game. You never give up your pride and lose purposely for the purpose of getting a pick. You play hard and try to win EVERY night.
