Also like I said, I would try to move Dion for a couple of rental players then sell them on the team, the vision of the future, and lock them up. Morrow and Ryder for Phaneuf for example if Dallas is out of it later in the year and looking to re-tool. Maybe they'd prefer a piece like Dion over a couple of draft picks. We could then re-sign those two and get a couple guys who could make a difference in another way.

Newsflash, you don't "need" anyone. Not even a 30-goal scorer. Boston traded him after he scored 36 goals and won the cup the next year. They didn't even get anything that made much of an impact their cup year. I think Seguin got like 20 pts his rookie year, give or take and was a 3rd liner in the playoffs that year.

Boston also traded Joe Thornton for spare parts. Clinging to players is a dangerous thing to do. If Phil doesn't score thirty maybe someone else does, or a couple guys pick up the slack, or we give up 30 less goals on the season because of a few key additions who fit Carlyle's style of play. A goal prevented is equal to a goal scored.

Just a little perspective, I'm not saying you're wrong. It would be tough to move Phil, but for the right guy back I'd listen to offers.

depends on the return, you cannot move Phaneuf or Kessel for rebuilding type pieces (think the Hossa/Kovalchuk deals). The time for the rebuild is over, now we have to develop the pieces we have and trade for the big impact players we need (without destroying another spot).

I think trading Kessel would be just plain dumb, you don't move a 30-40 goal scorer for pieces that you hope will turn into the 30+ goal scorer you need. Dumb, really dumb, idea. Fact is the time for a full 5 year rebuild is over, time to focus on getting better.

Trading Phaneuf is not a terrible idea but you have to make sure you have guys that can play 20+ minutes to replace him. People complain about his -6 right now but if you have someone like Liles getting that many minutes he would be much worse than -6.

Anyway my point is moving Kessel or Phaneuf for a package of maybes and low 1sts/2nds doesn't help us, we have plenty of bottom line players with an outside chance of turning into top line players. Go out and get those final top-end pieces or continue to develop them while keeping the top line players we have.

I could be wrong but I think these kind of back door deals are against the rules. It would be like a billionaire owner signing Getzlaf to a 5 year $15M contract and then paying him $100M to clean his house, lol.

Maybe nothing that obvious but you get the idea. :P

There is nothing wrong with voicing an opinion, and you have some well layed out thoughts. I am not against trading Kessel but my thought line is more laong the lines of losing him for nothing. That being said outside of Rielly, Gardiner and that 1st we should have ZERO untouchable players, IMO. If the right trade comes pull the trigger.

Yea, Dion has tried to simplify his game which is going to hurt his production.IMO The problem I see with Dion is similar to that of Kessel, we don't have the horses to surround them with. Kessel would be more effective with a team that the top six is unreal. Kessel on the second line with NYR or playing with the likes of Crosby, Malkin, Kunitz, Neal in Pitt or Van with the Sedins, Burrows, Kessler. That is the ideal situation for Kessel, we just don't have that.
I think Dion would be more effective if you let the reigns off. Let him run around a bit and get more involved in the game. Problem here is, we don't have the D-men to allow him to do that.
This is why I am not against moving Kessel or Dion...although I don't think NOW is the right time. If we had the players or could acquire them without trading away our assets or picks that would allow Kessel and Dion to succeed, then keep them. We cannot trade grabovski and get Richards in return though. Nor can we trade MacArthur and get back Neal or Iginla.
It makes more sense to me to add to players like JVR, Lupul, Grabo, Kuli, Frattin maybe Kadri upfront and Gardiner, Gunnar, Reilly on the backend, Reimer in net. The returns for Dion and Kessel could change the make-up of the team. There is $12 mil tied up in two players that could easily return us some top players and prospects without damaging the cap numbers too badly or at all. We have good enough 3rd and 4th line players (playing or in the system) so MacArthur and Bozak could be added in deals also.
I know this thought won't be popular, but if you think of the players we could get for Kessel and Dion and add them to what we have...I think exploring it is worth while.
