Leafs looking to add a defenceman

General manager Brian Burke has cleared some cap space with trades, and he’s looking to add a defenceman before the clock strikes on NHL trades in one week.

Though Burke will be in the free-agent hunt on July 1, the core of young players as it stands probably will be part of the 2011-12 Leafs.

The bigger question might be whether Ron Wilson still is around to coach them.

That aside, the 21-year-old Schenn, who’s developing into the kind of player and person to be the next captain if Phaneuf eventually moves on, simply is glad the dark days might be mostly in the past.

“Starting out when you are 18 and being around losing, it is no fun, and being honest, it was tough the past couple of years,” Schenn said. “Now, it is starting to be a little more exciting. You’re starting to see the upside we have and the potential, guys coming in here and working hard.

Is it me or is Burke just going around in circles and about to throw up because he's getting dizzy?

First of all he says that he's willing to trade picks for young players. He then ends up trading Versteeg (young, decent player) for picks.

He then proceeds to say he has a backlog on the back-end and says he needs to move defenseman. He trades Beauchemin and Kaberle for picks and prospects.

Make up your mind Burke. Why trade these players when a week later your looking for the exact same players that you traded in the first place? The replacements for these guys via trade are likely gonna cost the same draft picks and prospects he's just acquired. If you don't like the players, why not do a player for player trade instead teasing Leaf nation with a rebuild you obviously have no intention of doing when your just gonna end up flipping what you got via trade for players similar to what you have just traded?

Is Burke still after a top 6 centremen? I thought if he would use both those first rounders and change that he would get a great centremen. Now it looks like he will use one of those first rounders in a package to get a defecnemen and the other first rounder in a package to get a forward.

I slightly agree with you, Burke is a hypocrit, saying he doesn't want draft picks, and in the end he takes draft picks. But you had to know that this was gonna happen, if your trading to playoff contending teams at this time in the season the only thing that you are gonna get are draft picks and prospects. No playoff contending team is gonna trade one of their best players for another player because it would a letteral move. But maybe this the only way he can make the trades he wants, now he can trade all those draft picks that he just aquired and trade them to non-playoff contednding teams for players that may give us a push to the playoffs as well being a part of our future. If he does that then I will take back the hypocrit comment.

He is probably looking to flip the 3rd for the expiring contract just to fill the roster spot. He is not gonna flip both 1sts, Colborne, and Gardiner for some stop gap defensemen. Kaberle's long-term replacement will be found in the UFA market. Trust me, if he packages the guys he just acquired, he will be getting quality youth back.

If Dallas slips out of the playoff race BB will try to use the picks and some prospects to get Richards. I know in the Kaberle press conference he said that he was going to try on July 1st but I still think that if he can get him sooner he will.

I think that BB should hold on to those picks, Richards will not do well with the Toronto media.

His plan wasn't working out so he's flipping the script, change doesn't make someone a hypocrite.

Not everyone is a predictable one dimensional simpleton but I can see how that is lost on someone who exists merely to be critical of the Leafs not matter what they do.

We have two number one centers in Kadri and Colbourne….

    Yeah rebuilding sucks.

  8. leafmeister says:

Kadri is gonna be a winger in the NHL. Colborne looks like a 2nd line center.

  9. reinjosh says:

Why do you think he will be a winger? Just because he played a couple games in the NHL as a winger? Because he is undersized?

Kadri is going to be a center in the NHL.

  10. leafmeister says:

I believe he is a winger in the AHL, and has played much better on the wing.

  11. reinjosh says:

I'm pretty sure he's still a center. I think the whole left wing thing was something they tried out in the NHL and for a short time in the AHL. It was based on his apparent lack of a defensive game, which he has greatly improved in the AHL. He's still a center.

The name I keep hearing in the rumors is John Michael Liles from Colorado. He would be a solid pickup to add some offence to the blueline and play some of the big minutes Beauchemin and Kaberle ate up.

I'm not sure if the 3rd pick Burke said he offered for a D-man was for him, as you would think he would be worth a little more but who knows.

  13. MystifoLeafs says:

Liles would be an amazing pick up and could possibly fill the void left by kaberle. He has a NTC and I don't know much about the guy to think he would want to come to Toronto but who knows. Works for me as long as we give up none of our future.

I wonder what the Atlanta Thrashers were asking for when they were rumored to be dangling Zack Bogosian?  A first rounder and a prospect maybe?  Id definatly part with one of our first rounders and any prospect not named Kadri, Aulie, Reimer and Rynnas.

He's not exactly playing fantastically and is ranked 4th in defensive scoring on his team.  In retrospect he has quite a bit of potential and a 6'3 215pound frame at the age of 20.
