Leafs Year: 2008-2009

It looks like the Leafs won’t get much help next season from the prospect Pool. Pogge and Earl need more time with the Marlies. Stralman is a few years away from playing in the NHL, Williams needs a good healthy year before being called up, Tlusty and Aubin will join the AHL ranks next season, and Kulemin has signed a 1 year deal in Russia for Next season.

So this means the Leafs need to go UFA crazy this offseason to keep pace right? Wrong. One common feature of all of the prospects I mentioned, is that they should join the big club the year after next. So THIS offseason the leafs need to work on keeping the pieces of this team in tact, long term.

Sundin 2 years 5.5 mil per year
Antropov 3 years 1.5 mil per year
Poni 3 years 1.5 mil per year
Colaiacovo 3 years 1 mil per year
White 3 years 1 mil per year
Devereaux 1 year 0.75 mil
Battaglia 1 year 0.75 mil

Stajan 4 years, total of 5 years 1.5 mil per year
Steen 4 years, total of 5 years 2 mil per year
Wellwood 4 years, total of 5 years 2.5 mil per year

Morozov 3 mil 1 year
Garon 2 mil 1 year

Suglobov, Harrison, Kubina to Columbus for Foote and a 3rd round pick.

Cap hit of 48 mil (including the amount remaining on Belfours buyout)

So this team is average at best, probably wont make the playoffs. Who cares, look at the 08-09 squad.

Stralman 500K
Kulemin 900K
Call up some guys with 2 way contracts

The Leafs now have 39 mil spent, only needing 1 more player. They can offer a guy like Heatley 7 mil, and with a slim 46 mil cap you have:

Raycroft and pogge have had 3 years to mature, young guns can provide spark to the team (or if some aren’t ready you can resign Pohl, Battagia, or Devereaux)

    1) Heatley is a Senator, I wouldn't bring him in. Sorry.

    2) Who the ***** would give Steen $2 000 000?

You overpaid Stajan and Wellwood too.

  2. Gryphon says:

Fcuky you how bout' that one!

  3. Gryphon says:

LMAO ROFL i didn't spell ***** right lol

  4. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

actualy i arguably underpaid them. consider these are the $$$ they will earn oer 5years, and in their primes.

  5. BieksaForMVP says:

Jere Lethinen, and Kris Draper (when he could score too) did not make 5.0 million, so don't expect Stajan too.

  6. BieksaForMVP says:

No one wants Suglobov, or Harrison. They were already on waivers this year and no one took them.

  7. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

to claim them off waivers they have to play them in the NHL, a trade allows a team to send them to the minors.

  8. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

where did i list stajan at 5 mil???

  9. BieksaForMVP says:

Oh sorry you said 5 yearss, i thought you said they would be making 5 million. Guess I read it to quickly

  10. BieksaForMVP says:

no your allowed to claim them waivers and put them in the minors again. It would put them back on waivers, but I think they still could. It's the same as a trade, except you don't trade anything for him.

  11. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

no, if you claim a guy and put him on waivershe goes backt the riginal team. if you trade a guy hat has already cleared waivers, you can assign him to the NHL or the AHL.

  12. Go_Leafs_14 says:

Nope, we need to do what the Canucks did, big change, take a risk, look what has happenend when the team didn't take risks, but your idea is pretty good and you are patient it seems, too bad about kulemin in russia.

  13. leafs-man says:

this is retarded (but it's good if you want to finish LAST)

  14. justin711c says:

i have a better idea, how about u some fa's this year to 1 year deals. if it doesnt look like the team isnt good enuf then get as many 1rst rounders as u can for 2009. then u TANK the crap out of 2009 and trade all ur 1rst rounders for taveres and hope to god that he isnt the next daigle. then if taveres is the next crosby then u have a mega superstar that can lead u to many cups. thats my idea, id rather b a great team for years then fighting to get into the playoffs every year

  15. BieksaForMVP says:

I think thats a bad rule, but okay i'm just gonna assume your right, so thanks for telling me this.

  16. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Wellwood maybe, but not Stajan and Steen. Not paying them that much.

  17. BieksaForMVP says:

Thats gonna result in your team finishing last for two more seasons, and if everyone tanks it, they'll have no trade value, but i still love that idea lol.

  18. 24_cups_and_counting says:

This is too funny. For the last 10 yrs, people have been crying for Sundin to get a TRUE 1st line winger. You proceed to get heatley, and then still have Sundin playing with Pokahonsky and Antrogoof.

  19. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Sundin puts up points no matter who is beside him. Heatley would do better beside a playmaker like wellwood.

  20. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

so we need to trick a stupid GM into trading away one of the best players in the game for an overpriced slow player (like kubina).

  21. ShadysBackRJ says:

well thats what the canucks did, so yes

  22. ShadysBackRJ says:

    here's why this doesnt work:

    1) we will completely suck next year

    2) all of the young guys that might come in 08-09 arent gonna become 30-goal scorers right away, its gonna take time. so now this means were gonna completely suck for 2 or 3 years

    3) we have to sign some FA's that will play with the young guys that come in. the FA's will then also help us make the playoffs next year and the years after that

  23. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

completely suck for 2 years aint bad, considering the draft picks we will get. if we can't win next year we might as well build for the future.

  24. masarume says:

As much as I appreciate "creative" articles, the problem is, they just aren't realistic.

The Sens aren't going to let go of Heatley w/o a serious fight.

Stajan/Steen/Wellwood are NOT going to be signing 4/5 year deals at 1.5/2 million dollars.

And Pogge is NOT ready to be the back up jsut yet.

Also … this has been brought up again and again, but when will other Leaf fans realize that KUBINA IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE! Nobody wants this guy. Too much baggage at too of a price for too long.

I admire the creativity but at least … make this article more realistic.

  25. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Heatley was an example, the idea was that the Leafs would go after a big name UFA forward. Stajan, Steen, Wellwood can easily sign 5 year deals, like guys like Lupul and Klesla have. Pogge after 1 more season with the malies may be nhl ready. like i said if not a cheap UFA backup can be resigned. Kubina is an issue that people totally misunderstand. Other teams offered Kubina more money andhe turned it down to play with kberle. Kubina could be traded, however he would not like it, and GM JFJ does not have the WILL to trade him.

  26. BieksaForMVP says:

HAHA Heatley already plays with Jason Spezza who is a way better player then Wellwood will ever be.

  27. masarume says:

I would love these guys to resign with us, but realistically I don't think we will have them.

Kubina was wanted LAST season. I'm sure if Kubina has trade value now, JFJ would pull the trigger. But then this is JFJ we are talking about… the same guy that wanted Kubina to begin with.

Now that more and more Bertuzzi rumours are starting, I'm more and more upset.

  28. gregpb says:

    How about this:

Offer Ryan Smyth 5 years at 6.5 million per and hope he accepts it. Sign Scott Hartnell. Trade Kubina and a 3rd rounder at the draft to Edmonton for Joffrey Lupul and Raffi Torres. With the two new wingers, move Steen to his natural position of centre. Re-sign Battaglia to a 750k tops contract.  (Salaries will match a bit better with Torres and a 3rd being thrown in) Promote Kronwall and hope he can be a top 6 d man. Wozniewski isn't good enough. I like the idea of adding Garon, but if they have some dough left over sign Backstrom. Potential lineup:

    Smyth   Sundin       Lupul
    Hartnell Wellwood   Tucker
    Torres   Steen        Battaglia
    Kilger    Stajan       Ponikarovsky

    Kaberle  McCabe
    Gill        White
    Kronwall  Coliacovo

  29. LeafsLegacy says:

Wow, all under-estimating the Leaf's season, plus where's the passion?? Look at the leafs when Wellwood and Tucker was out, even Kaberle. The people who really stepped it up to fill their shoes was Pohl, Battaglia, Deveraux, White and Stajan. Im not sure were this negativity is coming from. Although the leafs didn't make the playoffs, but you have to consider how close that Eastern Confrence race was. Ex. so Atlanta had six more points and sit in third as we sit in ninth. Leafs were doing pretty good without their "star-players", so just signing one good UFA, instead of several, would greatly impact ths leaf team, for the team does not need to adjust that much.
