Looks like Sweden and Finland for Gold

I was pretty shocked today when i got home that Sweden blow out the Czech Republic 7-3 today.

Now the Finn’s and beating the Russia’s 4-0 now and they are all over the Russia’s to.

So the Sweden and Finland for gold well its going to be a really good game but can the finn’s stop Forsberg and the high power Swedens.

I KNEW Russia would lose without Malkin hes just too important of a player for that team

  3. wingerxxx says:

Russia was just overmatched. Finland’s style of play was too much for them, and they just murdered the Russians on faceoffs. Malkin’s absense really hurt them. But even if Malkin had played, I don’t know if Russia could have won.

If Finland plays like they did today, it’s going to be very hard for Sweden to win. Then again…Sweden has Forsberg, who can make all the difference in the world. If anyone can solve the Finnish defense, it’s him. It’s going to be a fun final. Even the Bronze medal game should be great.

Russia is a better hockey country, and had better players, the Finns know who eachother are, most of them play together in Dallas, and the Russians don’t know eachother, not to mention, they are top rate chokers!

funny finland doesnt have kipper or lehtonen.

Alfie and Selanne are going to be all-stars of the tournament team, and whoever has the better game of the two will win it for their team.

Alfie is a man posests this year. Selanne looks like a Neely/Bure cross out there.

Selanne will definetly make it into the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame after this. He is playing the best hockey I have ever seen a non-Canadain play since Madanno in the Cup finals.

    Selanne the Gold.

Alfie the Cup – and a Silver.

i saw the finns play and i could not believe how godd they were. they work hard are not afraid to hit. they all play very good defensively and can still score amazing goals. they are great on faceoffs and i did not see a weakness in todays game. sweden plays such a similar game it will be fun to watch.

i would take a bunch of guys like Ville Nieminen, Ville Peltonen who is not even in the nhl at 32, Niklas Hagman, Antti Laaksonen, Niko Kapanen, and Jarkko Ruutu over a bunch of big shots and superstars that were on teams like canada and russia.

give me a bunch of grinders who can get the job done maybe not pretty but they still win!!

Dallas vs Wings for gold!! Both teams have a big connection to one of those teams (Swede & Finland) as the Swede have one full line of Wings players with Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Samuelsson, Lidstrom and Kronvall (replaced injured Ohlund) and Finland with Jokinen, Lehtinen, Miettinen, Kapanen and Hagman from Dallas so one of the two (Dallas or Detroit) will get a bunch of players back with a gold medal and great confidence for the stretch run and playoffs…i hope the Swede win gold and now they actually have a goalie who can stop a puck from the red line…should be a good gold medal game even if it sucks that Canada got the boot so early

  10. CechmanekForVezina says:

Who needs them when you have the guy with the coolest name ever.

  11. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Alfredsons had a good tournament, but he’d have to score a couple on Sunday to be a tournament all-star, Hossa has as many points so far in fewer games, and Selanne and Koivu both have as many points. This is ussually done as a points or points per game kinda thing, and Selanne and Koivu would be favoured over Alfie if they win gold.

  12. FoppaFlyers21 says:

    Go Sweden.

Sweden hasn’t played physically at all, while Finland throws hit’s all over the place. I only hope Sweden realizes they need to throw some hits. If they don’t, Finland can easily take control of the game. Either way, it’s gonna be a good (and way too early) game.

umm no… its LUNDQVIST vs. NITTYMAKI

  14. nyrhockey094 says:

Ruutu deserves to be hit in the head with a balpeine hammer

  15. Dynamo710 says:

Forsberg vs. Finnish defense. Any goalie in the NHL could put up 5 shutouts the way the Finns have played defensively. Nittymaki has been solid, but nothing special.

  17. marcs797 says:

i think your forgetting the netminder in goal for finland.

niitty has played amazing, but if not him, then def selanne

  18. bartsch says:

I was hoping Russia would beat Finland, I just dont like Finns. Now they’re garunteed a medal :(

Just makes no sense they can win, when they have players such as Aki Berg playing…. and hell, not even a top goalie.

GO SWEDEN! The better Scandanavian country will win tonight, and it will be Sweden!

  19. flyersfan21 says:

Granted Niittymaki may not be no Brodeur but he is only a rookie this year.

He did take the Phatoms to the Calder Cup and was MVP of the Calded cup playoffs.

If it wasnt for him the Flyers wouldnt be in 2nd place.

He’s a calm goaltender that doesnt crack underpressure.

If the Finns win on Sunday he’ll probably be MVP of the series.

He’s been playing outstanding so far in the Olympics.

    He played 5 games

    has 3 shut outs

    GAA 1.00 and SV% 96.32

not bad for guy who wasnt even suppose to be on the team Finland.

Bet Finland is glad that Miikka Kiprusoff & Kari Lehtonen decided not too play in the Olympics.

Check the name there, chief. I think this guy might be a Flyers fan. Get it now?

yeeap, then the first game back….same matchup

  22. SabresFan220 says:

I’m looking for a close game here 4-3, 3-2, something like that. Nittymaki has been good, but not as good as Lundqvist. The Swedes’ strength is at forward, and the Finnish strength is defense. Can the thus far dominant Finnish defense overpower the intimidating Swedish power forwards? I think if they could shut down Russia that maybe they can. Sweden will get it’s chances on Nittymaki, but not a lot of them, and Finland will be playing transitional all game long. For Finland to win they will have to capitalize on the few transitional chances they will get, Henrik has been very solid though. Look for a big game out of Nittymaki, Selanne, Saku Koivu, and Olli Jokinen if Finland is going to win.

Sweden has been tough all tournament, especially since Forsberg stepped out on the ice. If Sweden will win, Forsberg, Sundin, and Lundqvist will have to be dominant and use the team’s physical presense to get past the Finnish defense. That said, I think Finland will find a way to pull out a close win by 1 goal, with maybe an empty netter at the end if it doesn’t go all the way to OT or a shootout.

And for the hell of it if it goes to a shootout, here are my predictions for each team’s 5 shooters in no particular order:

    Finland: Selanne

    S. Koivu

    J. Jokinen

    O. Jokinen

Jere Lehtonen (I know I spelled it wrong)

    Sweden: Sundin

    Lidstrom

    H. Sedin

    Alfredsson

    Forsberg

  23. wingerxxx says:

Berg is playing an extremely limited role for that team. He was scrambling a bit against Russia. Teppo Numminen is playing a wonderful tournament. I have a feeling that Sweden can beat them. The Forsberg factor changes all.

  24. Dynamo710 says:

thanks i got it now, gaylord.

  25. dcz28 says:

I think Sweden would have Zetterberg in the shootout instead of Lidstrom

  26. captainjoefish says:

ya that was a bad hit just think they are undefeated without tuomo ruutu

  27. captainjoefish says:

are you kidding lundqvist has played good but nothing compared to Nittymaki

sure antero does not face as many shots but he is 5-0 with a 1.00GAA

lundqvist has let in some weak goals like vs. the czechs those 2 fast goals

nittymaki looks very calm and i agree finland defense plays so well i think it will be 2-1 finland

and this finnish defence has shut everyone down so forsberg and sundin will be a challenge i think they will handle it and there fore checking is amazing

  28. captainjoefish says:

it does make sense that they can win they are playing the best hockey out of everyone the don’t need that many big name guys they just have a lot of hardworkers who know how to play the game extremly well

    GO FINLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. kicksave856 says:

    what does that even mean?

  30. BeLEAFer925 says:

My money’s on the Finns…I never thought I’d see the day. They’re just to hot right now, and Koivu’s playing awesome, olympics and NHL. Plus he always leads the team and ups his game when playing rivals, see Montreal vs. Toronto. He kills us ever season. Does anybody else think he might be one of the best captians in the league?

Eventhough I’d put my money on the Finns, I’d rather see the Swedes and Sundin pull it out eventhough they’ve got Alfredson. I hate Alfredson, but he can play.

Does anybody think the Leafs will have a big congradulatory ceremony for either Sundin and Tellqvist or for Aki Berg, or even Tomas Kaberle upon they’re return to the NHL season? It might be a little awkword especially since Canada was humiliated and Quinn was the coach. And could this be the end of Quinn in TO? Everybody kept saying the Leafs wouldn’t fire the coach because he’s also the olympic coach but could he be fired now because he wasn’t much of an olympic coach?

Finally does anybody else find it weird that here in Toronto everybody rags on how bad Aki Berg is and how he has no place on Toronto’s defense in terms of being top 6, but he is good enough to play for Finlands olympic team? I mean its not like Finland is short of top defensive players. Weird, but he doesn’t play well in Toronto.

It’s a Dane Cook joke on his newest cd. nevermind
