Lubomir Visnovsky in Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky from the LA Kings.

In exchange, Edmonton part with defenseman Matt Greene and centerman Jarret Stoll.

Both Stoll and Visnovsky had an-off year in 07-08, with Visnovsky making 5.6 millions/year. He tallied only 8 goals and 41 points, after getting 67 and 58 points. He’s still an excellent puck-moving d-man, so the Oilers must be hoping for a bouceback season. This could also mean the end of Joni Pitkanen passage in Edmonton.

In Stoll, LA are getting a 3rd line centerman, 2nd line potentially, excellent at faceoffs and with good size. With the departure of Cammalleri, they needed depth at this position. In Matt Green, they are getting a solid stay-at-home d-man, very physical, good for a 2nd or 3rd pairing.

A lot of breaking news tonight in the NHL!

here’s a quick résumé of what we’ve got so far :

Liles extented for 4 years in Colorado
Foote in Colorado for 2 more years
Malone in Tampa Bay for 7 years (confirmed)
Visnovsky in Edmonton
Greene and Stoll in LA

K-Lowe must be seeing the writing on the wall….after tendering an offer to Stoll the other day Lowe must've realised Stoll wasnt interested and had better trade him for something rather than lose him to an offer sheet.

THe Oilers have enough younger talent to last for a few seasons but need some guys with a bit of experience.

I do agree with pezzz that this probably signifies that Lowe isnt confident in bringing back Pitkanen.

The Oilers power play is going to be great.

But as of right now They are going to get pushed around big time.

They better get some toughness soon.

Lubo Visnovski is a great pick up. Stoll and Greene will be missed but I see those two players as being a little more replaceable then a guy like Vij-no.

Quick prediction: Vij-no puts up over 50 pts for the Oil next year.

Now, look for the Pitkanen vs Cole to make the spotlight again.

Honestly, I don't really understand this trade by the Oilers. In Lubomir, they acquire not only a huge contract, but a player similar to Souray : a cone in defense. also, they just signed long-term Tom Gilbert, who had a great season with 13 goals and 33 points. was Visnovsky really needed on the PP? also, in Matt Greene, they lose the only grit ans physical presence they had on D, along with Staios. Maybe they will now make a splash for Orpik on the UFA market?

  5. oilcountry88 says:

Yea the oilers definetly need a stay at home defenceman and Orpik would be great. The Oilers also desperatly need toughness and Orpik can bring that too

  6. pezzz says:

what do you think about Visnovsky? do you think like me that there's too much PP specialists on defence, and not enough d-man responsible in their own end? Gilbert is a great 2-way, but with Lubomir and Sheldon on a pairing, you will maybe score 3, but you will take 5.

  7. oilcountry88 says:

i think the Vishnovsky trade is a steal for edmonton and he will do great on the PP setting up Souray and making him better. I really like it though it will bring great stability on the 2nd unit too which makes a great PP. Well maybe this is a message that Pitkanen is gone and maybe they will add a prospect or 2 to get a stay at home D-man and a power forward. I really would like to see vermette and commodore or meszaros come back at us

  8. pezzz says:

do you think that Pitkanen to Ottawa for the rights of Commodore and Stillman is a possibility? and if they don't sign them, a high pick is going back to Edmonton for Pitkanen

  9. oilcountry88 says:

its definetly a possibility but edmonton is looking for a younger player to play with Hemsky so i would say Vermette is a better possibility. I think Commodore would fit great here and i would love to see him but i dont know what K-Lowe has in mind for a defensive defenceman. Maybe he will look to free agency instead of a trade.

  10. oilcountry88 says:

im suprised Kramer has'nt commented on this yet… he has wanted a trade for so long

  11. pezzz says:

Orpik would be great, but he's the only very good stay at home d-man is this UFA market, so he will cost up to 5 millions. do the Oilers have this money?

  12. oilcountry88 says:

well since the salary cap just went up and they gained about 2 mil for the Vishnovsky trade but Pitkanen,Sanderson,Reasoner, glencross are likely gone so in total the cap is now about 45 million so ya they actually have quite a bit around 8 mil

  13. pezzz says:

4 millions more if they trade Pitkanen for Erik Cole. so 4 left….I think Orpik will cost 4.5 or 5. so they must trade or waive one more player. Raffi Torres, for exemple, could very well be on his way out.

  14. Kramer says:

I predict we're gonna see big activity come Tuesday.

  15. oilcountry88 says:

yea i really like Torres but i would say hes gone. If someone offers Orpik that money he will take it even if its Florida (terrible team right now). I think hes only worth 3.5-4.

welcome to the party htr.. only 24 hours late

  17. pezzz says:

I submitted this article 3 minutes after the trade was public knowledge. It's only that the trade was made around 10h30 pm, so the admins may not be on their computers at this time. they still own the right to have some sleep, or to party. and if you're still not happy, there's always the very credible and entertaining hockeybuzz.com

  18. Wings19 says:

Forget about Orpik. They should bring back their old captain whos likely on his way out of Philly

  19. oilcountry88 says:

O YEA holy crap i forgot about him… hes cheaper than Orpik and has more heart and is a way better defenceman in my mind too

  20. oilcountry88 says:

A rumor i just heard said the Oilers starting point to Hossa will be 9 million!

  21. JannettyTheRocker says:

Oh yeah??? Where'd you hear that? As a diehard Oiler's fan, I'd happily give Hossa 9mill+ to come play with the Mighty Oiler's of Edmonton. Hopefully this rumor you heard is true.

  22. oilcountry88 says:

On 630 ched the radio station. Have you ever heard of a guy named Dan Tencer. Well he was the one that mentioned it

  23. leafsrule31 says:

hence why i said welcome to the party htr, not welcome to the party pezz.

hey man, do they want to run a website or not? i'm not knocking personal lives.. it depends on where they want to go. one of the busiest hockey nights of the year and they have nothing for 24 hours?

i prefer tsn.. the fourthperiod is usually pretty on the ball to.

  24. mojo19 says:

Hossa probably won't want to play there. I think they'll have to go up over $10 million per season, long term to make him consider moving to the North Pole (aka Edmonton).

By the way Jannetty, I'm not trying to start a war with you, I'm just stating the facts, Edmonton is the least desirable place to play in the NHL according to the players.
