The Toronto Maple Leafs have apparently fired general manager Brian Burke according to TSN hockey insider Bob McKenzie.
WOW it’s been confirmed.
Bob Mackenzie – “This makes no sense.”… My thoughts exactly. They have to have someone lined up in place to take Burke’s job…Unreal.
I guess Nonis takes over.
Something must have happened to spark this.. I know theres been criticism in Burke’s lack of urgency to win now so maybe there was a deal offered that made sense for the team but burke said no which irritated nonis who went to the head? resulting in getting him fired? who knows im just trying to figure out what happened that triggered this timing of firing him
As per Mark Spector.
“Sounds like Burke did NOT want to make Luongo deal, while many in Leafs org did. Burke a principled man.”
i hope this is the case, loungo deal just makes too much sense now with being able to buy him out next season without a cap penalty if he doesnt perform well.
I think we should trade for him, buy him out and then resign him to a short term deal. It would only cost MLSE money.
You can’t sign a player you’ve bought out.
are you allowed to do that? i didnt think you could sign a guy you just recently bought out. Signing a guy that you already still owed money too wouldnt make much sense
No idea if we could actually do that. But there were rumors of signing Tucker before he retired and we’re still paying him now. So I think it’s possible.
I believe there is a cool down period. Perhaps the length of the original contract, but I’ll have to look that up later.
Mindblown!!! Not sure how I feel.
A new GM means a new vision. Toronto might be big sellers at the deadline…Phaneuf, Kessel, and Grabovski might be on the way out.
I think they’re in win now at all cost moving forward. There is all kinds of rumors, saying they fired him because he didn’t want to trade for Luongo. So I think his firing makes Luongo to Toronto almost a sure thing.
As if ownership would allow a full rebuild.
Agreed. This is a cash grab after a new ownership group’s shareholders are pissy about losing hundreds of millions from a lockout right after buying the team.
I really hope they didn’t do all this just to try and land luongo. Nonis already got him once in Vancouver, and Burke and Gillis hate each other, so it makes sense….but I will be greatly displeased.
As of right now though, I’m okay with Nonis getting the nod.
Holy shit, didn’t even read the title of the article.
Excuse my ego but I gave his eulogy three years ago. At least the organization is be proactive for once.
That said not sure how I feel about this given that I expect that Burke would be a lot better in the new CBA landscape. I know I’ve harped on Burke a lot but he’s half a great GM and half a victim on his own principles.
At least he left some good pieces for the next GM.
He made a numbers of great deals, what really killed him was a lack of a concrete plan that he followed through on. He was too over map trading drafts picks then collecting prospects. I can’t stress enough that to have success you pick a plan and you follow it all out. Look at the Jays, that how you build a team as a GM.
Burke also carried a small market mentality into a big market. He’s always had a chip on his shoulder about markets that could out spend others.
uhh, unless I’m reading that first bit wrong, you’re patting yourself on the back for saying three years ago that he would be fired? If that isn’t the case, forgive me, but if it is, are you fucking kidding?
Unless you said three years ago that shortly after the lockout ended MLSE would shock the world by firing Burke, a a move everyone saw coming but timing that floored the hockey world, you’re full of shit.
In that light, here’s my prediction: one day Crosby will retire.
You’re half right, I didn’t predict he’d be fired, I carefully plotted out how he’d be a failure and Brian followed script.
Go troll someone else.
Okay, if you’re going to call me a troll I’m not going to be so polite. Pretty much everyone save a few on this site (and fucking everywhere else) was predicting this. The only shocking thing is the timing. To try and give yourself credit is complete bullshit.
Next time there is a trade please come here and take credit for predicting it. Just make sure you say you did it so long ago that no one can check. You surely are a bold analyst.
Maybe pat everyone else here on the back that calling for his head while you’re at it.
Two years ago I predicted it would be -1 in Ottawa when Burke was finally fired.
alright boys, shake your dicks, this pissing contest is over.
So Burke is staying on as an advisor. So what was the point of firing him right now?
I actually like that Idea. Allows Burke to stay in the system and use his extensive knowledge and allows the next guy (Nonis obviously) to do stuff Brian wasn’t willing to do, like use offer sheets and sign big free agents for top money.
If this is true, Burke can save some face and continue with his and Nonis’ vision.
Who better to use his first offer sheet on then Jamie Benn.
I’m not sure if there are any restrictions because of it being his first RFA round, by why isn’t anyone talking about offer sheeting Subban? I mean, I highly doubt he would sign it, but he’s from Toronto and it would sure piss off the TML folks, even if it failed.
Troll Nonis? heh heh heh
the habs would match it hands down and yeah he’s from toronto be he grew up a habs fan! lol
TML=MTL… ugh, my head.
So really, it’s kind of like they traded jobs. I’m actually very okay with that now that I’ve had a short chance to think about it. Keep the talent in the organization and maybe change direction slightly. Keep Burke, but no need to keep all his rules. I like it.
Well I am not sure I understand the timing of this. I am not gonna bash Burke as he has brought in a lot of good pieces moving forward. He did have his faults yes, but all in all we are better long term for him having been here.
This is a bg set back. Worst ownership in the NHL anyone with a cellphone knows that. Great we have Bell and Rogers meddling in hockey affairs. I miss the Pension Plan.
Would you prefer Ballard?
Lol touché, great my choices for worst management are Leafs of present or Leafs of past.
Not that I disagree, but Pension brought in JFJ and pulled his strings…
True but they supposedly learnt their lesson and let Burke do his thing.
True. I’m just worried that the new group is looking for some instant Playoff Cash instead of long term success. I certainly hope I’m missing something and this is a move to help the leafs in the long run, but I’m skeptical.
If anyone is interested you can watch the live press conference here: http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=61026&navid=DL|TOR|home
Burke is far from without fault but he was setup for a big summer, money to burn and assets to deal.
Sounds like ownership could give a shit about long term they want playoffs at all costs.
Makes sense. I can’t even imagine what kind of cash a handful of playoff games would bring in. Unfortunately the suites are looking at bottom line, and they can make the share holders happy in the short term by bringing some post season revenue. I mean, think about it, you buy a team and the next year the team is lockout and no revenue comes in for half the season… I’d panic too.
A great day in Leaf History!
Hard to tell, but I’m tending to agree with you. Especially considering he’s apparently staying on as an adviser.
Sportsnet is saying that ownership is demanding a Luongo trade which is retarded. Have to assume Gillis knew Burke was under pressure that’s why the asking price was so high. Gillis is a position to rape the Leafs. Thanks Rogers.
Ugh, I hope you’re wrong. If we lose any real piece for Lu I’ll be pissed. I don’t really want him in the first place, though I would only really be pissed if they gave up too much for him.
Man, if this really is all about Lu this really shows weakness. Unless Nonis had a deal already set up with GIllis, Lu’s value to Toronto just went up.
its not just Gillis. lots of Peers I bet hate Brian. hard to make trades when maybe 30-70 percent of your peers wont talk to you.
True. Plus he further ties his hands by not using offer sheets or signing long term big star FAs. Hopefully people will be willing to deal with the Leafs now that Nonis is at the helm (even though Burke is still with the organization).
well i am sure other GMs have their own ways of doing things, or things they wont do. but none of them stand on a pedestal and announce it to the whole world. there is nothing wrong with having ideals. Its telling the everyone under the sun about it painting yourself into a corner that is utterly stupid and poor for business.
True. Showing the hand to the table.
I just hope they still let Burke do the press conferences. He always cracked me up.
Heh, great approach when you’re building your team pretty much exclusively through trades, huh.
But Gillis knows his position that’s why he’s holding Florida over the fire as well, he has Toronto in his back pocket.
it is a bit of a detriment isnt it?
I dont blame gillis for that. thats his job.
but there are 3 assets that should be untouchable in leafland. gardiner, reilly and their 1st. is it that heartbreaking if anyone else is gone? not really.
pretty sure kessel and dion are staying so everyone else? gravy.
its not a huge loss to see anyone else from Aucoin to Kadri to Zigomanis leave. i wont shed any tears. no one should.
Remember what Gillis asked for at the draft? Gardiner was just a piece of that package.
I don’t want to give up Finn, Biggs, Kulemin or Gunnerson either.
Well Gardiner is head and shoulders well above those other names.
Sure, its not ideal to move too many assets, but, again, none of these players would be crippling losses imo.
if it meant say the leafs trading 2 of those names instead of gardiner, its a win for the Leafs.
if the deal does not involve Gardiner, Reilly or a 1st round pick, then its fine.
I mostly agree, but they can still give up too much considering they can’t give Lu away to anyone else, it seems. We’ll see. I doubt they massively over pay, but MLSE definitely showed its hand and put Gillis in a position of power.
hey we know, kessel, dion, wont be part of it. anyone else, who cares. if they get to keep their 1st, in a rich draft coming up, plus keep their clear cut 2 best young players, no biggie IMO.
i think Lou will make those in front of him better. thats what makes sense.
We need to get worse to get better. Not slightly better. that will only make us worse in the long run. It’s the quick-fix paradox.
well he will rape the leafs wether it’s burke or nonis !
I love how no one on TSN (except Dutchie in a tweet and maybe Bob McKenzie) everyone is to shit scared to call BS on the move and blaming its brutal timing on the owners (Bell and Rogers)… oh, wait, TSN is owned by CTV, with is owned by Bell, which owns… ahhh, I see.
Gotta love the absurd level of concentration of media ownership in Canada. Ugh.
Don’t forget Jay Onrait “I think more Canadian sports media people would be chirping new MLSE owners for Burke firing if they didn’t all work for those same owners.”
Going on what Joel is saying…Doesn’t this now give leverage to Vancouver in a deal?
If you want to fire BURKE. FINE. But atleast bring in a new GM and blow some things up.
This is reminding me of JFJ…When the Pension Plan was his puppet?
This is more scary then Burke as GM.
It’s weird…Because Alex Anthopolous was given time. Nonis is not.
Yeah, well look how poorly that turned out… oh, wait.
Best hope is that Nonis already had a deal in place for Lu and we’ll see it go through in the next few days. I’m iffy on getting Lu, but all I really want is to not over pay.
Someone suggested Bozak, Ashton, and Franson. I would be content with that…Except I like Ashton.
we should scream if its Kessel, Dion, Gardiner, Reilly or their 1sts involved in the trade or any trade. otherwise. good luck whomever going to Vancouver or wherever.
In some positive news, read this article on Komisarek and looks like he made many life and career changes:
I really hope he can return to the player he was.
If this is about Lu, I have to say it seems really dumb. I mean, I doubt Lu was going anywhere this season. Vancouver has really no pressure to get rid of him. Not like Lu is bad for the team to be around and the weird cap this year means they can still do what they need to and no one really wanted him.. Florida, maybe. Plus they maybe he plays really well in his limited role and brings his value up slightly. I say let Burke finish the short season (or go till near the end of it) and let Nonis get Lu in the summer.
Man, this timing is really weird.
looks like maybe the way Burke does things, i.e talk too much, perhaps wasn’t the kind of thing the new owners wanted.
less blowing hot air and more of a respectful, quiet, cordial approach like AA with the Jays.
Ok, might be a bitter pill but if Luongo comes at a reasonable price would that be the end of the world? Everyone saying our blueline is horrible but individually there are a lot of good players and upside there.
Luongo/Riemer could develop into the next Luongo/Schnieder.
Also if this is the Pension Plan second coming, ok, go out and swing for the fences with UFAs and trades. No more second rate veterans because we know that doesn’t bring in playoff revenue anyway.
i really think the addition of a proven, top goalie would help Dion the most and in turn the entire defence.
Dion wasnt playing like, well, Dion. The guy is a high risk, high reward guy. He tried though playing like the next Rob Scuderi. He’s terrible at that. The guy needs to go out, hit anything that moves, be aggressive, play tough. if there is a guy who can bail him out back there, it will help.
I completely agree. Dion is his best when he plays his game. When the team gets better he will get back to the Dion of old.
Aquiring Lou at the right, note I said right price for the Leafs would be ok. But they are in no position to sell the preverbial farm for him. It would be addition by subtraction. Nonis is smart enough to get that.
I think Burke was let go as he is not people friendly so to speak. this is ok if you are on top of the world, but they weren’t. You can’t lose your cool at everyone or deal in absolutes in the NHL ans a GM, IMO. That being said his players loved him, so he had to have something going for him.
McCowan says Gillis is asking for Kadri & Gardiner and Burke refused to pull that trigger.
This is the darkest timeline.
I’m okay with Kadri. Fine. But Gardiner and Reilly need to be untouchable. Nonis and Mlse can’t be this stupid…Can they?
I have really mixed emotions about this right now as I do like the idea of a fresh start (assuming we get one.) but the timing was horrid. On top of all that the rumor is Kadri + Gardiner and that is a horrible deal for this team no matter how you slice it. The only good thing about that deal is if it went through I get to say to Burke haters “Well at least he never did that.” That being said even if it went through I am seriously considering burning my jersey.
Put the FAN590 on, McCowan has been talking about the Kadri + Gardiner for an hour now
What is McGowan saying about Gardiner?
That Burke was told repeatably by the board to pull the trigger on Kadri + Gardiner for Luongo.
Burked got axed for refusing to do it.
I think Gardiner or Rielly would only ever be moved for an elite #1 centre under contract and young
burke is and was very overrated as a g.m. and he proved it in toronto the team there wasn’t any better in the 5 years he was there he made a few good trades and got totally raped in another one(the kessel deal)
What is wrong with blowing this thing up? Seriously.
What is wrong with selling Phaneuf, Connolly, Bozak, MacArthur, Grabovski, Komisarek, etc.? Build prospects and picks like so many other teams have done when it looks hopeless. Nonis, this is your team…Actually have a vision of building something great.
I would rather go hard for MacKinnon then go sideways and trading a young star like Gardiner for Luongo…WHICH MIGHT END VERY BADLY.
Creating those spots will atleast allow the improving Marlies (prospects) a chance to see what they can do in the NHL?
Gardiner for Luongo is a mistake…No way to argue it and another bad move by this organization.
Build a f***** winner already…Not another mess.
To explain my point better…The 2013 NHL draft looks very deep.
1. Lupul (impending UFA) will bring in atleast a 1st and mid-level prospect.
2. Phaneuf will bring in atleast a 1st and mid-level prospect.
3. Bozak should fetch atleast a third-round pick.
4. Connolly might fetch a fourth round-pick.
5. MacArthur should fetch atleast a second-round pick.
With those deals, Toronto should be bad enough to finish in the bottom-2.
Call up Kadri, Colborne,Ashton, Blacker, etc. and give them some time in the NHL…It’s not like they are expected to produce immediately, less pressure.
You build a team with a decent amount of prospects…To a team with propects that no team could compete with.
That is what Chicago did, that is what Washington did…It’s even what the Los Angeles Kings had to do.
It’s what we have to do…Until then, no playoffs.
Then you can evaluate what prospects to give up…And which ones not after the season is over for Luongo.
It’s called the BLUE JAYS model.
No, Gardiner for Luongo and then we get killed in the first round each year.
Im so glad you’re not the GM. You fetishize prospects way too much. Ya blow it up completely that’s a garuntee. Trade Phaneuf who was a decade of good hockey for what could very easily amount to nothing a mid first and a decent prospect? What a joke.
It’s called the Scorched Earth Policy…Mostly every team had to do it. Phaneuf is not a franchise player, as pointed out in hockey central today.
actually blaze I side with LN91. I think by selling off everyone, even Dion we have our best bet at landing a top 3 overall pick. And I am of the mind that the best bet right now would be to try to get a top 3 pick in each of the next two or three drafts.
I’m ready to be patient and build properly. See my comment way below.
Dion is good but not a franchise player…He had that potential when he came to Toronto, started off hot but has flat-lined.
In other terms…Lupul (impendng UFA), Phaneuf (Reilly and Gardiner have bigger upside), Bozak, Connolly, MacArthur…Should be sold for the 2013 draft. Even by dealing Dion…Our defence is deep.
Besides Dion only has a year beyond this one on his contract. Maximize the assets. You trade him next year as a rental and you get less.
Plus like I said, I’d rather get worse right now and get a better draft pick.
We almost got that pick anyways. We don’t need to get rid of everything to get a top 3 pick we just got a top 5.
Phaneuf is a piece worth keeping he is absolutely a number 1 defencemen, top 30 in the league. The guy plays 27 minutes a night!
People with prospect boners drives me nuts. What happens when you get rid of everything get a 2nd overall pick draft Seth Jones and he’s not even as good as Dion and you waited 5 years for it!! What a waste of time.
Yes sell some pieces and keep some pieces which Burke was doing.
And no LN91 not every team did scorched earth and some that did failed.
Minnesota traded a #1 defencemen in Brett Burns last year.
They recieved Setoguchi, Coyle, and Zack Phillips for him.
You would not take that deal if it was on the table right now considering you have Reilly and Gardiner waiting in the wings?
Also, look how the Wild’s fortunes changed because of it.
How did their fortunes change because of it? Setoguchi sucks and they still missed the playoffs and those prospects have done zero. Their fortunes potentially changed cause the hit a homerun in FA.
And absolutely no chance I’d take that deal. How is Reilly a replacement for Phaneuf?? And as high on him as I am he hasnt even played a single game yet.
Well Blaze, a lot of people thought the Bruins were crazy for trading Joe Thornton for Wayne Primeau, Brad Stuart, and Marco Sturm. But it enabled them to sign Chara. Result? Stanley Cup. Just saying, Dion is replaceable in other ways like cap space and we can get young assets for him. Unfortuanately that’s where we’re at right now.
Gardiner, Reilly, and a 1st should be the only untouchables on this team…Just shows bad management and ownership to this day.
i think it’s a mistake for burke ,nonis or anybody in the leafs organization to acquire luongo because his heart really isn’t into playing there ,it’s in florida and why acquire him when it’l be a disaster because he really doesn’t want to be there. the leafs should go after bernier or just keep status quo!
Burke was on the right track, the only issue was his morals and the things he wouldn’t do. But he continued to stockpile young players and not make any short term moves.
The ONLY benefit this could bring about is Nonis being willing to do what Burke wouldn’t. However that is eclipsed by the fact hes pressured for playoffs at all costs.
What is funny is the CBA was finally set up for Burke to make a huge splash.
That’s not funny that’s sad. Very sad.
I had always wanted Nonis to secede Burke someday but not like this. Let’s see if he has the same back bone as Burke with pressure from above.
he should’ve been fired after he got raped by the bruins in the kessel deal
Yeah Kessel only had 82 points last season, what a stiff….
yeah and seguin had 67 points is 20 years old has a stanley cup and will be as good as kessel or better
Oh? Did Seguin finally crack the top six in Boston? BFD.
He scores goals well, but he’s perhaps the least scary forward in the entire NHL. There’s a reason the Bruins gave him up…I mean, aside from the two Top 10 draft picks. You could give me three Kessels, and you still can’t have my Tyler Seguin.
And Gainey should’ve been fired after he got raped in the Gomez deal.
Unfortunately…Does not work that way.
gainey did a better job of running the habs than burke did of running the leafs big diffrence
This is why TO needs a second NHL team. Suits run the Leafs. Its not the team of my youth anymore.
Agreed its a f%*king disgrace
Goddamn they’ll own the team forever. Who could ever buy it? And what till Rogers and Bell argue amongst each other on the board.
Here’s an article by Richard Cloutier:
As depressing as it sounds, he hits the nail right on the head.
For Toronto to be successful and have any chance to win a cup, they need to tear everything down and do his properly.
He mentioned Rielly and Gardiner to build around, also he is very high on Tyler Biggs (a player I have advocated for). The rest he said, can be dispatched (he mentioned Kessel and Grabo also staying put).
I agree with him. Go for MacKinnon, finally get a face of the franchise player…Toronto does not have one yet.
Think if we would have kept some of our picks and prospects –
JFJ trades Tuuka Rask for Andrew Raycroft
A year later, JFJ trades a 1st and 2nd rounder (those picks were packaged to move up a couple spots and grab Logan Couture) for Vesa Toskala and Mark Bell.
Talk about wasting young assets!
Then Burke comes in and flips more young assets. I mean, at least Kessel is still valuable and on the team unlike JFJ’s mistakes but we were set back by trying to go for the quick fix, again.
Imagine, hypothetically that we were able to obtain and retain these guys. It would have been a long rebuild but we’d have some serious building blocks in place with Couture, Seguin, Rask, possibly Hamilton coming along, and we’d still have other prospects we have acquired and kept along the way. Had we gone with a proper rebuild the current state of the team would have a lot more high end, young talent in place than the current state of the team.
Now I’ve heard (and even at times made) the argument citing the Islanders, Blue Jackets, etc. But for all of those teams there are Pittsburgh and Chicago, and who knows if the Oilers will become something special? I would have liked to have gone with a proper rebuild and I hope Dave Nonis implements one.
This starts with not making a play for Luongo.
I’m ready to be patient, no more quick fixes. I can wait a few more years if I see a plan in place and some high end prospects enter the system. Does anyone agree or disagree?
The sick thing is had Burke traded the 7th overall pick (Kadri) and Kaberele for Kessel in the first place we would be set with Seguin, Kessel, Hamilton and Knight.
Well, it’s a short season. Why not keep the team mostly intact, maybe sell off a few pieces for picks, and bank on Mackinnon. I mean, it’s a bit of a long shot (even if Edmonton does well this year, I’m sure they’ll win the lottery) but some luck might be the only chance. If the Pens don’t win the Crosby draft are they the same team that won a cup and perpetually attracts high end FAs?
I mean, why blow it up when we have a very young core that isn’t going anywhere? All this talk of Phaneuf having one good season left and having been crap since he got here is utter BS. Anyone that watches him knows he’s a huge force on the D and certainly better than simply top 30 d-man in the league.
Take the team we have, keep developing out young keepers (along with our young forwards and your D) and add what hopefully amounts to a franchise center in Mackinnion and I think we have a team that can content in a few short years. Yeah, we can keep blowing it up, but how many players will be sacrificed to do so? What does 5 years of losing do to Scrivens, Reimer, Reilly, Gardiner, Kessel, Kulemin, and the dozen prospects laying in wait?
Scorched earth does’t always work, and we take a pretty damn big risk by doing it. What if we sell off Phaneuf, Kessel, and Grabo and all our prospects start firing? What then, if the teams starts developing but all the 25-27 year old guys are gone and there is no stability.
This is a short season, and if we stick with Bozak on the first line and split time between Scrivens and Reimer and a brutal power play system we should be in the top 5 or 3 picks. Grab that pick, and feast on the upcoming FA buffet and we could have a good team that can play while also developing many of the young assets currently not so patiently waiting to see NHL action.
Consider if Burke had no pressure this year from above. Gave his goalies one more chance and when they sucked we grab another top 5 pick. Trade off just a few guys who had good seasons for picks say MacArthur, Liles and Franson. Spend big on FA. Jesus I loved how things were setup long term. I have little hope now.
I’m baffled that new ownership is on the verge of killing all my excitement for hockey to be back.
It’s not that they’re trading Gardiner, it’s that they’re giving away arguably their best asset for another team’s garbage salary dump. Gardiner could be the kind of center piece to a blockbuster deal but MSLE exercises deliberate ignorance which is going destroy good will in Leaf Nation.
Many don’t think Nonis is that foolish…But this franchise has seen dumbr days.
I don’t think it’s Nonis’ call.
Yep. And then yet another regime will start out by trading a great young asset. If Nonis trades Gardiner and Kadri for Luongo we need to revolt.
If Gardiner is traded for Luongo I will no longer be a Leafs fan.
Burke also didn’t go about his quick fix the right way. He could have done it if he’d fired Wilson early on. Gone after Gaborik and Cammalleri instead of Komisarek, Armstrong, Orr, Beauchemin at the beginning of the truculent era.
Oh well. Can’t change the past, but here’s hoping for a brighter future.
Did he ever bring in a single truculent player? I mean, Armstrong had some bit, but hardly fit the description Burke gave. All the enforcers he signed up were previous era NHL players and didn’t help. Komisarek turned out to be a major dud.
20/20, I guess, but boy did he every make a small fast team..not exactly what he set out to do. I must say, the toughest, hardest playing guy on the team during the Burke era was fucking Gabovski. Nothing against him, he’s the best player on the team at his position (except maybe Kessel) and certainly my favouite.
Tank, draft MacKinnon or Jones (wishful, I know), and sign Getzlaf and Neal. In the next 2-4 season the leafs young guys get time and develop, one of the tenders steps up and becomes a clear number one with a future, and steadily climb the standings each year.
I don’t think it’s a lost cause, we just need to fix it properly. A goalie needs to come from within and a center needs to come from FA. Beyond that the team looks to be in good shape in the medium term, to me… as long an fucking Bell and Rogers can keep their hands out of it… as long…
No one will sign with this shit show operation.
I don’t see Nonis in a rush to deal Gardiner or Rielly to be honest. He is a smart hockey man, period. He should have been the choice in the first place. That being said Burke has do e a good job of acquiring some quirky assets and prospects for not a whole lot. He did a better job then given credit for but not as good as needed.
Ya, that’s a fair assessment.
Very true. I mean, look at the simple out versus in and it looks good. Scratch the Kessel trade and he’s a damn miracle worker (though if the rumours are true that Nonis was the man behind the Phaneuf trade I’d downgrade it to very good).
Nonis said in the press conference he’s not blowing the team up and rebuilding. He said they’re going to assess some players and ultimately they want to win now. So be prepared for them selling the farm.
I really don’t think he will sell the farm, but i am wrong several times a day, lol.
my guess is that Kadri will never play a game again for the Leafs.
Franson is done and so is Bozak. Other “veterans” like Gunnarsson, Kulemin and MacArthur aren’t safe. Prospects like Percy, Biggs, Colborne, maybe Ashton will be in play for sure. Maybe even one of their goalies. Anyone else in terms of prospects they have is rather insignificant.
As long as they don’t move their 1st or Gardiner or Rielly, they will be fine and IMO still have a “future” on their roster.
I’m not at all worried about selling this farm.
Personally, I don’t think they move any of Gardiner, Rielly, Biggs or the 1st. the forst two and last for obvious reasons, but guys like Biggs don’t ccome along everyday. do I think he will be Lucic as he is compared to, no. Clowe wouldn’t be bad though and we have no one in the system like him, power fwd with a skill set.
I think this team can have quite a bit success as it is right now, with a front line goalie.
I just think, as a mentioned above, a top goalie will help Dion be Dion. And the team as a whole will gain a lot of confidence.
As much as a Edmonton rebuild sounds great on paper, this is a young team still. I think a little success will help. God knows the worst thing about the Leafs isnt goaltending, shoddy D, or even Tim Connolly. Its a lack of confidence. Confidence takes care of a lot of things. They’re a shakey bunch afraid to lose.
ya allowing your players to play to their strengths is key like you mentioned. Plus if Komi is any better as is is said at least shape wise that can’t be worse and Liles is ready which is good. So all in all i think Nonis will amke no bonehead trades, lol, imo
Also I’m certain ya can forget about big buyouts. The suits care about the bottom line there won’t be any trading for large buyouts. Even if Luongo came here and sucked they’d never pony up the money.
I’m not so sure about that, the Pension Plan to a fault were always willing to spend money in hopes of making money. If it was just about the bottom line couldn’t they just spend to the floor and rebuild, save the money they would waste.
This organization is gluttonous when it comes to overspending of journeymen blueliners and forwards, coaches and countless members of the management team but they refuse to break the bank on superstar players. It’s perplexing.
Komisarek will likely be bought out. And they have a few free agents. so its not going to be crazy buyouts here anyways.
The irony of finally having buyouts available and not needing them.
very odd, but very true. but they don’t really have any real candidates other than Komisarek. Its funny how that worked out.
Maybe Liles? just throwing another name out there.
Ya but I thought they were not able to buyout any contract until after the season? Isn’t this why McKenzie was explaining the Rangers options with Redden? Speaking of Ranger, ours is playing extremely solidly for the Marlies. Good signing by our mgmt team former and present lol.
well thats what i mean. no reason to buy out a Connolly or Lombardi cause they are UFAs. but in the summer, there is still that option for komi as he has a year left and Liles who signed a long term deal.
i am not so sure Burke’s guys will last long….this includes the guy who took over as GM.
That an even more terrifying thought. Atleast Nonis is smart hockey man even with pressure from above I expect him to do a decent job.
If they clean house but won’t allow a rebuild Jesus that terrifies me who would they bring in? A true yes man JFJ 2.0
i think the window is really small for them. Its not fair but i am thinking this organization now wants immediate results.
It wouldn’t shock me if Nonis only got 48 games and the search is really on for a new GM/hockey boss.
Liles is a big buyout target. If he doesnt rebound he could be bought out. If he does rebound he’d likely be traded in the offseason anyways or next trade deadline to make room for Reilly.
Its true. It is Ironic.
Ya Komisarek will probably be bought out. But who the hell knows? Seems like a Carlyle guy if he can find his game.
And I guess if Liles is hurt again this year he could be a candidate, but that’s really it. I wish we could just pay off our previous buyout debts in Tucker and Armstrong and take those off the cap instead.
Maybe but I’d never see them approving say a Luongo buyout for 30 mil if he shits the bed.
And I wouldn’t want to buyout Komo right now anyways. I thought he played well for Carlyle so far. He gets the half season then maybe bought out if needed.
Ya Komi, might be ok, He said at the seasons end meeting Carlyle told him he would prefer him to be in the 230lb range, i believe he was near 245-250 before. That alone could make him a better in terms of performance via increased stamina. An already slow player slowing quickly is not good.
Ya I don’t really know what to make of all of this, i am confused to say the least. I like a lot of what he did, not everything. I think there is somestuff that could have been done if he wasn’t there. That being said the way the new CBA is set up to “punish” circumvention contracts, it may not be a bad thing we didn’t do some? I think Nonis is a good GM, just quieter then Burke was. i wonder though if this had been done sooner if we could’ve held on to Dudley? There are still a lot of good hockey people here, hopefully we some sorta change. LOL, like playing for 60mins would be a good start.
Nice article on TSN about Orr trying to reivent himself as a player with the help of Eakins. He is hoping a trimmed down Orr has got his mojo back. He was once a relied upon PK’er for the Rangers, and we could use his toughness.
