Finally someone on here that I agree with 100%. Gainey will bring in a proven scorer and these so called "other" fans of the team need to just be patient and let him do what he does best. In Dallas he didn't bring a Cup right away, and no one expects him to "right away" in Montreal either. He had a tough year after the tragedy in his family losing his daughter, so give him and the organization a break, its gonna be a new summer, and a fresh start to the season as well, GO HABS GO!

did anyone think maybe a double 'sign and trade' for Souray?? they're probly worth about the same thing 5-6 mil/yr. montreal would have to throw in something extra like pick/prospect but it is realistic.

What are you smoking? Higgins and Markov for Marleau and Davison, if Higgins isn't proven than tell me What in the F–k did Marleau prove in is 12 nhl carreer years? But that wasn't enough you had to go and make an ass out of yourself by throwing Markov in the mix, those two guys are better than what the Sharks had to give up for Joe Thorton! Please can somebody prove me wrong and explain to me what did Marleau do in is career that was so spectacular! We don't need another two way center in MTL, whoes best days are behind him, what we need is a STAR not a second plan players! The only reason has a better production than in the past, cause now all eyes are on Thorton's line, that means that Marleau plays against the opposition worsts lines!

Do you think that will ever see another 50 goals scorer in MTL and do you think we should wait for Heatly next year instead of signing a AVERAGE UFA this year?

this deal would almost be an absolute steal for the habs!!! marleau is the premiere center they are looking for!!!! but i don't think the habs will have to give up as much as everybody thinks!!! as other habs fans and fans of other teams are suggesting!!,here's why i think it won't s.j. is going to sign drury and that makes marleau expendable in s.j. and the shark would like to and will trade him before he wakes away an unresticted freeagent at the end of next season!!! so s.j. i believe will take sheldon souray and a conditional pick for marleau!! if marleau resigns with the habs the pick will be a first round pick in the 09 draft!!! s.j . won't ask a king's ransom for marleau either because then they're stuck with him and won't get anytihng for him and lose him for nothing!! this is why i think you will see this deal happen!!!!

Undoubtedly, Marleau has a better scoring touch than Koivu. Though I think Saku is exactly in his prime right now, Marleau's one as yet to come. I don't know him enough to say he would be better than Saku, but I sure know he would make the team's offense look less terrible. I feel he would be a better fit than Brière or Gomez in MTL. And, of course, I would prefer Crosby, Lecavalier or Thornton, but ….

I don't disagree.

Teams that want great players have to be aggressive and overpay. It is a risk that could blow up and destroy the team or it could lead to victory. The Ducks were aggressive enough to get two of the three best defensemen in the NHL through a skillful free agent signing and a trade. In theory both those players could have gone to any other team, but the Ducks were aggressive and got the job done. Philadelphia was aggressive in getting Forsberg, and many thought it would be the cornerstone to a Cup run, but it didn't work out so they gutted the team and have already landed two of the better free agents for this offseason.

Meanwhile, Montreal spins their wheels, discarding used parts (Ribiero, Zednik) and collecting players who will not make a major impact on their team (Johnson, Niniimaa). None of the free agent signings improve the team. Nor has management done anything to dispell the notion that Montreal is still in a rebuilding stage and is not a desired destination for free agents.

This begs the question - is Gainey competent enough to take a big risk, or should he stick to the useless moves that guarantee mediocrity? To get a good left wing and a great D-man, montreal would have to give up some of their few decent players and massively overpay. Or they would have to leave huge cap space and hope for a trade of a disgruntled All-Star mid-season.
