Where do these figures come from.
The Habs sit at a payroll of $42,996,800 including the contract of Bouillon who we know will not count towards the cap as long as he is a player. The Habs therefore are about $1 million under the cap and when Bouillon comes back will be even more under the cap.

Not as much wiggle room yes but fine none the less.

Remember we are still holding on to two #1 goalie contracts, and if say Abby were to leave that frees 1.9mil right there. Additionally, while Francis Bouillon is not on IR right now, he could be moved there to free up additional cap space if necessary (not sure if he already is).

As for trading Bonk, let me say this: he is not getting traded. Gainey likes him. Carbo likes him. They just promoted him to a third-line role, and really feel that he brings size and skill, plus a lot of defensive savy, to that position. They feel that he just had a slow start due to injury, and is now ready to jump forward.
One of our goalies will be traded, but we have no need to do so yet and we now have good depth in both forward, defense, and goal in case of ANY injury.

So, for the start of the season, while I would love to have some more relaible firepower, it ain't that shabby and we don't need that 'wiggle room' at the moment.

By acquiring Niinimaa, Gainey already spent for emergencies. Given everyone's cap situation, the high priced players will be most difficult to move. Wiggle room could come from injuries (Bouillon, Souray) or demotions (Traverse).

Interestingly, Gainey kept only one forward from the team he inherited at the end of 2003, trading or releasing everyone but Koivu. He has kept the defense pretty much intact, retaining Rivet, Souray, Markov, Komo and Bouillon and even reacquiring Traverse. Gainey dumped the organization's three netminders and brought four new four goalies into the organization.
