Sharks should give Thornton three-year deal he desires
Sharks center Joe Thornton has a history of signing three-year contracts, currently on his fourth such deal right now, taking him through the conclusion of this season.
And, he reportedly wants another one, as agent and brother John Thornton recently told ESPN.
There’s probably no rush to get it done from either side. For Thornton’s part, he enjoys playing in the Bay Area, and with two young children it’s no surprise he’d like to remain where the sun’s always shining, yet the NHL spotlight isn’t quite so bright.

Trade talks heating up for Fleury, Kane?
The TSN Hockey Insiders provide more details about Brent Burns’ big eight-year deal with the Sharks, discuss whether Marc-Andre Fleury will be on the move before March 1, the Sabres seeking a blueliner for Evander Kane, and the Leafs searching the trade market for a shutdown defenceman.

Sharks and Flames looking for a goalie
The San Jose Sharks are looking for a backup goaltender, according to Friedman. The Calgary Flames may also be in the market for help between the pipes as a replacement for Karri Ramo, who was lost for the remainder of the regular season earlier this week. They can cross at least one name off their wishlist.

Defense, Marleau hot topics as Sharks approach trade deadline
If the Sharks are to make a big move, it will almost certainly involve Patrick Marleau. The 36-year-old forward’s agent has reportedly been exploring options for Marleau, who earlier in the season was willing to accept a trade to either the Kings, Ducks or Rangers. New York, in particular, has been scouting the Sharks frequently in recent weeks.
When asked on Friday in Nashville if he expected to be with the Sharks after the deadline, Marleau replied: “I just worry about playing.”

Patrick Marleau’s trade request has really gone quiet
Patrick Marleau’s kind-of trade request has really gone quiet as a storyline since that early-season blip of news. But don’t think it has gone away. His agent, Pat Brisson, continues to quietly explore the market; San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson gave him permission to do so earlier this season. Things should heat up closer to the Feb. 29 trade deadline, although there’s certainly no guarantee of a deal. Wilson will trade Marleau only if it’s a deal that makes sense for San Jose. Which means there’s just as good a chance that it’s an offseason move.

Trade demands no longer scary
Yeah, we’ll trade you. Maybe. If it works for us.
Patrick Marleau probably thought taking his feelings public would have him on a bus out of Silicon Valley very quickly. He’s still a Shark.
Could the Sharks trade Marleau?
It is less likely SJ asked Marleau to waive NTC and more likely that Marleau asked SJ to explore trade possibilities to select teams.
