Toronto Maple Leaf News and Rumors

The 2008-09 Leafs

Ok. Since everybody and I mean EVERYBODY has stated their opinions/ideas/ridiculous moves for the upcoming year. I would like to take a peak to the 08-09 version of the Maple Leafs. I know it is impossible to predict but lets get the best idea we can. I say this because, frankly, the Stanley Cup will be tough to win next year for the blue and white. Dont’t get me wrong Im a huge fan, and believe thewy will make the playoffs, but I think it is a long process, so lets look at what we have. This years FA’s likely to be signed:

Why the Leafs should not sign Ryan Smyth this offseason

Ryan Smyth is a great player but the Leafs should pass on him. The Leafs should save that money and invest in other free agents and keeping their youth.

The Most We Could Get For McCabe And Who We Should Sign in the Off-Season

These rumors about Bryan McCabe, although seem unlikely, could very well happen. People on this website are saying that the Leafs would just get a draft pick and a prospect but other teams could not afford him unless we take at least 2 million from them. Perhaps a trade could look something like this:
Toronto:

Maple Leafs Revisited

Here is the present situation, Let’s see what we should do.

Leafs talking to Bowman?

According to the Sun Media the Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to talk the legendary Scotty Bowman out of retirement It is speculated that they are trying to convince Bowman to take over a senior position with the club “possibly even team president.”

A Leaf Biased Draft Preview

While not really a rumor HTR thought that Leafs fans may enjoy this article, written from a Leaf fan perspective. The Article is Timlap’s 2007 Draft Preview and it is a quality article about the players that are available for the upcoming draft. If you are not a Leafs fan the information is helpful in order to “get to know” the players that are available at the draft this year.

Leafs Nearing Deal With Sundin

The Toronto Star is reporting that the Leafs and Sundin are closing in on a deal. It is speculated that the Leafs will sign Sundin to a two year deal worth 11.5 million, the same as what McCabe earns.

'Center or Winger?'

Should the leafs get a winger or another centerman? I think they should get another center and have two dominant lines. Move Sundin along with ponikarovsky and antropov to the second line and have a new number one line to take some pressure off sundin.

Leafs Re-sign Staffan Kronwall

John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that the club has re-signed defenceman Staffan Kronwall to a two-year contract extension.

Kronwall, 24, began the 2006-07 season with the Maple Leafs, but was assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL) on November 14. He played 47 games for the Marlies, collecting 17 points (3 goals, 14 assists) with 32 penalty minutes. Following the conclusion of the AHL regular season he was named the Marlies ‘Best Defenceman.’

Leafs sign Staffan Kronwall to a 2 year extension

JFJ anounced Thursday that the Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed Defenceman Staffan Kronwall to a 2 year contract extension

Ponikarovsky is Canadian!

Alexei Ponikarovksy got his Canadian citizenship yesterday (June 6th) in Toronto and is now Canadian.

Who would you fill the blank with???

The Leafs situation this off season shouldn’t be to difficult. They need 1 top line winger, 1 second line center, and a backup goalie. Assuming, and I think it’s a fair assumption, the Leafs GM resigns Antropov, Battaglia, Williams, Colaiacovo, Kronwall, Harrison, and Racine. There line up will have three holes, the three I mentioned, and I want to know who you would fill the blanks with for the right budget.

Maple Leafs Sign Phil Oreskovic

John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that the club has signed defenceman Phil Oreskovic to a three-year, entry level contract.
