A lot, I repeat a lot of talk has circulated about, what the Leafs are going to do now. Well, the Leafs always talk the talk, but can they walk the walk too? In other years, the moves have not lived up to the hype, but maybe, just maybe the Leafs will this year.
With the leafs not making the playoffs their will be some retooling that will be needed but what will the leafs do ? They need to resign Boyd Devereaux, John Pohl, Nik Antropov, Bates Battaglia, Carlo Colaiacovo, Ian White. N
This post is not for the main page, but if it finds itself there, lets try and keep it objective or just don’t respond.
Well as I sit here, the Ilses have defeated the Devils in a shootout to claim 8th spot in the East. A shootout to decide the fate of both teams seasons is not a scenario that i looked forward to, but it happened, and thats how it goes in the “new NHL”.
It is very easy (and fun) for us Leaf fans to get caught up in the short term. Especially when that short term sees the Leafs and Habs battle it out in a showdown on Hockey Night in Canada. There is no other word to describe then ‘fun.’ and maybe – ‘intense.’ But with both Leaf and Hab fans must realize (and many do) is that all of this – the playoff race, the showdown, the melodrama in Montreal, the inconsistency/injuries in Toronto – are all very much meaningless. [Note: this article, written on Friday April 6th, might be posted AFTER the results from the Habs/Leaf game]
There is a lot of talk that the leafs should part ways with Sundin and focus on the future. I am here to write that parting with Sundin at this moment will not help us but hurt us more at the present time and in the near future. Reason being we do not have that next star to take over the Maple Leafs, There is no clear or forseable star waitin or up and coming. Everytime since the 90s the leafs have traded a star player another one was ready to take over. Lets take a look.
Bryan McCabe is not worthh 5.75mill a season average and most certainly not worth 7.1 this season an next. So lets provide HOPEFULLY our new GM in the off-season with some ideas assuming jfj will (please god) be FIRED.
First things first, I have to point out some of the Leafs faults during this season.
First: Not being able to bounce back after a big win. Yes I know how much this frustrates you but it is true the leafs have a serious over confidence issue. Think about anytime beat someone by a 5 or more goal difference they lost the next game.
first move: fire john *****in furgason (jfj) he has not produced any star talent and has overpaid for some of the crap that wear a leaf uniform.
second move. Gotta move McCabe some way…i know he has a no movement clause but if u tell a player ur not wanted here anymore he’ll probably waive it…what u can get is a whole different story..
3rd move gill he does not block shots, hit, move the puck and gets caught in the offensive soon….as he did today when the flyers scored the first goal.
4th move stajan…he’s young has some value so we could get something for him….there is no room for him on the leaf roster….sundin, wellwood, peca and pohl….and i would not switch anyone one of those guys for stajan..
The leafs have 2 options,
1)keep the team they have now, and hope for a healthy year next year
2)get some juicy free agents
This is what I think the leafs offseason should be like. There have been guys that write articles like this but put totally unrealistic numbers for player salaries. THESE PLAYER SALARIES AND TRADES ARE REALISTIC UNLIKE SOME OTHER POSTS…this is assuming the salary cap next year will be 47 million.
The Leafs had a chance this year to stock up on young players and draft picks, Mats Sundin and Darcy Tucker were both highly desirable assets, but Tucker signed a 4-year deal and Mats Sundin is a pending UFA, the trade deadline has passed. With the cap going up and the amount of free agents out there the Leafs can make an impact this off-season, the best we can do is to be a 4th-10th place team in the East.
