Toronto Maple Leaf News and Rumors
The Toronto Sun is reporting that the Leafs are set to enter he bidding wars for key free agents tomorrow now that the salary cap is at the 50 million dollar mark.
Mats sundin has been stuck with second line linemates most of his career. The two best linemates he ever had were Gary Roberts and Alexander Mogilny with both of them past their prime.
Sundin is an nhl superstar who has been consistent through out his career being a more than point per game player. He is 29th in all time goals, 42nd in assists and 34th in points.
There is two days left until the free agents are allowed to escape their current nest’s and find a new burrow. Some teams such as montreal have been dumping salaries and will have a lot of play come sunday. Other teams such as vancouver are right up against the wall and have virtually no playing room. The leafs are a team inbetween.
All the talk about John Muckler coming to Toronto has got me concerned. I think this would be a bad decision and here is why. Muckler has made some bad decisions concerning his old club the Senators, he has left them in a pickle concerning the salary cap not looking towards the future at all.
Since Eklund has announced a possible pickup of Calder it has had me thinking of how the leafs should look for 2007-2008.
Assuming that the cap hits 48 million for next season, it gives the leafs about 6 million to spend on free agents. I dont think 6 million dollars would be enough to round out the forward units. Considering the amount of depth on defence, the leafs could possibly move one or two to free up cap space, to a team that needs defenceman. Keven Lowe of the Edmonton Oliers is looking for a puck moving defenceman. With a pending deal of Joni Pitkaien going to the canes and wade redden not likely going to Edmonton, Lowe could look at the leafs.
There is lots of rumors seeing the Leafs aquire top tier free agents like Gomez, Smyth, Kariya, Blake; and even second tier guys like Bertuzzi and Nagy. However, in an NHL governed by the salary cap, this cannot happen.
This post is purely speculation, as a true leafs fan this is what I believe is the best option for the buds for not only next year but for years to come.
A story by Steve Simmons of The Toronto Sun has said Scotty Bowman has turned down the leafs over a reluctance to work with Richard Peddie.
According to Sportsnet.ca, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a pair of moves Monday, re-signing restricted free agent defencemen Jay Harrison to a one-year contract while luring forward Simon Gamache, the leading scorer in the Swiss Elite League last season, with a two-year deal.
According to www.mapleleafs.com, the leafs announced on Monday that they have singed forward Simon Gamache and re-singed Jay harrison. Gamache played 44 games in the swiss elite leauge and got the leagues’ best 66 points, (20 goals and 46 assists). He also was tied for scoring in the playoffs with 16 points, (7 goals and 9 assists).
It is to be asked if the Maple Leafs are on their way back to the NHL’s good teams. They’ve made an interesting move this week-end by acquiring Vesa Toskala and this move could prove very rewarding. So what should they do or have they done enough to be back in those teams labeled as being playoff teams at the beginning of the season?
John Ferguson had a choice on draft day. Actually he had a lot of choices. Did he make the right one?
