Toronto Maple Leaf News and Rumors
It is to be asked if the Maple Leafs are on their way back to the NHL’s good teams. They’ve made an interesting move this week-end by acquiring Vesa Toskala and this move could prove very rewarding. So what should they do or have they done enough to be back in those teams labeled as being playoff teams at the beginning of the season?
John Ferguson had a choice on draft day. Actually he had a lot of choices. Did he make the right one?
For the past two years, Toronto’s 1st line wingers have been Nik Antropov and Alexei Ponikarskey, who have been playing with Mats Sundin. Antropov who continues to miss large portions of each season with nagging injuries and after over six years in the Leafs organization he has not scored more then 20 goals. Nik is not a first line player. Same can be said about Alexei, who has been able to stay healthy for the most part of the season, has not being able to be constintent with his point production. Alexei is also not a first line winger.
According to the Globe and Mail, it appears that the Toronto Maple Leafs may trade their first round selection in this draft (13th overall) to the San Jose Sharks for the rights to goaltender Vesa Toskala. It mentions in the article that the first rounder would be on a condition the team could agree to an extension with Toskala.
I would like to address the Leafs current Defensive corps. It seems to be in a logjam with too many quality and overpaid defencemen. Last season’s top 6 looked like this:
The Star.com is reporting that the Maple Leafs are still a ways away from resigning defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo. In order to protect his rights the Leafs will have to make him a qualifying offer but the First of July.
Of grater interest is that at the bottom of the article there is a statement that the Leafs are unlikely to bring back “unrestricted free agents Bates Battaglia, Mike Peca, J.S. Aubin, Yanic Perreault, Travis Green and Jeff O’Neill.”
According to the fan590 wednesday night, Ferguson may have some competition for his GM job. All things seemed to be locked up for the 40 year old GM, but it turns out that that contract offer may have been put on a holt with the firing of John Muckler.
So all this talk about the Leafs looking for an experienced hocky man to run the hockey side of MLSE. heres a rundown of the 3 main candidates, plus my surprise pick, pay attention Peddie and Tanenbaum.
Rumor has it that the Maple Leafs are looking for senior help within the organization. John Muckler would fit perfectly as team president, look where he has taken Ottawa, he knows hockey and has ton of experience. If the Maple Leafs are smart they should sign Muckler as President which would bump Peddie right out of hockey duties and possible JFJ down the road pending what he does this off-season. Bottom line Muckler would be perfect as Leafs president.
I have been away from this site for a while.
And it is kinda sad to see not much has changed.
Although, there is less leaf talk which is a good thing. Not that I am about to help that.
Based on this years available signings and the consequence of the CAP going up dramatically, I would propose something a little out of the ordinary.
This is not a pipe dream, we get everyone article.
It is a valid approach.
Future and present.
Trade Kubina and our 2nd round pick Oilers for the 6th overall and a 4th round pick.
McCabe, and Stajan for the Islanders 08 4th round pick and their 09 1st round pick pick. (Tavares draft year )
Free agency is heating up and the Leafs have around 10 million to spend. What do you do if you are JFJ? Good question
