OILERS COACH QUINN DISCUSSES DRAFT POSSIBILITIES ON 'OTR'

Oilers head coach Pat Quinn appeared on ‘Off The Record’ on Wednesday and discussed potential approaches for Edmonton at the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, where they are slated to have the No. 1 selection overall.

“I know the management side of our organization is working on it all the time. They’re obviously very serious – this is a big pick for our guys,” Quinn told host Michael Landsberg.

The first overall pick on June 25 is expected to be either Plymouth Whalers’ forward Tyler Seguin or the Windsor Spitfires’ forward Taylor Hall, and with the Bruins slated to choose second overall, the idea of trading picks has not been entirely ruled out, Quinn revealed on ‘OTR’.

“I hear rumours that there may even be an opportunity for a swap,” said Quinn. “Apparently Boston knows who they want and they’d like to have that first pick, and that could be a possibility. I don’t know that for a fact, but I’m just hearing the rumours out there.”

Quinn said he was not being kept in the loop about which player the team was planning on selecting with the top choice at the Draft, but he was excited at the possibility of bringing either prospect to the franchise.

    BOS:
    2nd overall 2010 pick
    32nd overall 2010 pick
    Ryder

    FLORIDA:
    3rd overall 2010 pick
    Nathan Horton

The second overall is going to be Seguin which is a Center, and currently Boston is strong up the middle, but I think are weak at defense. With Horton you get a big power forward with 30-40goal potential, plus they get rid of Ryder's deal which is addition by subtraction…

    BOS:
    Thomas

    SJ:
    2010 1st round pick

I still think Thomas is a good goalie, he was the Vezina winner last year.. plus I think hes a step up from Nabakov, and is currently a little cheaper. And SJ is giving up a first, but its not like its a top 10 pick…

    This offseason the Oilers should:

Fire Pat Quinn. I like Quinn but its rumored Renney and Quinn don't get along and that Quinn lost the dressing room last year. Renny is better at developing younger players than Quinn. Two head coaches just dosen't work the Oilers have to get rid of one.
    At the draft:
1st overall – Select Taylor Hall. A trade down is possible but it had better be for a big package from Boston to do so or fans will eat management alive.
31st – draft Alex Petrovic. Big defenseman 6'4 needs to fill out, good hometown kid.
    Trade:
    Edm: Spezza
Ott: Cogliano, Penner 3rd round pick 2010,
Trade Souray any where for anything same as O'sullivan. Do not take back a bad contract with more than one year left.
    Buyout Robert Nielson.
Sign Dan Hamhuis 4 years 14 million.
Sign Anton Volchenkov 3 years 15 million
    Hall Spezza Hemsky
    MPS Gagner Eberle
    Omark Horcoff Brule
    Moreau Pouliot Stortini
    Gilbert Whitney
    Hamhuis Volchenkov
    Smid Chorney
    Bulin
    Delauries
    Dubnyk
Leaves just over 3 million to possibly add some grit/size to the 3rd and 4th line, buyout Nielsen and take back a contract in the Souray and O'sullivan trade.
Probably won't get both Volchenkov and Hamhuis but they need 2 dman preferably with some toughness/ grit.
Its a very young forward group but huge amount of potential. With Spezza and Hemsky feeding Hall the puck it puts him in a great situation to score alot of goals.
