As December approaches the Olympic teams become a bigger topic. The 2 favorites to win Gold are obviously Canada and Russia. Here’s a break down of potential lineups.

Canada
Nash-Crosby-Iginla
Heatley-Thorton-Getzlaf
Gagne-Richards-Carter
E.Staal-Lecavalier-St. Louis
Toews

Niedermayer-Pronger
Phaneuf-Weber
Boumester-Green
Burns/Keith

Brodeur
Luongo
Fleury/Mason

If Thorton has a good season with Heatley he might be able to grab a spot on this team.

Russia
Ovechkin-Malkin-Kovulchuk
Semin-Datsyuk-Kovalev
Frolov-Kozlov-Radulov
Kulemin-Federov-Afinogenov
Filatov

Gonchar-Markov
Volchenkov-Zubov
Tyutin-Kalinin
Grebeskov

Nabokov
Bryzgalov
Varlamov

Who has the better team and who else could find a spot on the Olympic rosters?

Only a Leafs fan could have Kulemin making the Russian Olympic team, give me a break.

i think sweden has it over the russians. but those are definitely the top 3

russia is waaaaay better than sweden

he was at the orientation camp.  he has phenomenal chemistry with Malkin, and he is apparently one of the few right winger Russians.  some of the analysts predict him making the squad.  he also has the fact that he's a little grittier than the average russian winger on his side.

i doubt he'll end up on the team, but it's not a crazy bananas long shot either.  cool your jets with the leaf fan hatred there; the claim is a valid one.

    How about the Swedes:

    Zetterberg – Backstrom – Franzen
    D. Sedin – H. Sedin – Alfredsson
    Huselius – Pahlsson – Samuelsson
    Eriksson – Berglund – Holmstrom

    (Forsberg)

    Lidstrom / Kronwall
    Ohlund / Hedman
    Edler / Enstrom

    (Ericsson)

    Lundqvist / Gustavsson

Canada should turn the hockey world on it's head at the 2010 Olympics by playing 4 forwards and 1 defenseman:

Nash – Crosby – Eric Staal – Jordan Staal

This would be the Crosby, Staal's and Nash line!  Groan!

Anyway, it's interesting that people still put Iginla on the Canada's top line.  I don't see a lot of west coast hockey, but I get the feeling that Iggy isn't what he once was.  Is he really deserving of the top wing position on Canada's Olympic team?  He doesn't exactly light it up in the playoffs and his teams haven't exactly gone deep year after year …

Also, you guys seem happy to let Heatley on the team after what went down this summer.  I dunno.  Sure, the guy has got all world talent, but he comes with a lot of baggage and are you sure that he'll be able to keep it together in what will be an immensely high pressure situation?

This is not me hating on these players, just questioning whether they deserve to be on our Olympic team.  Also, I purposely haven't suggested alternative players to avoid the argument of comparing these players against any that I would suggest and to keep the discussion focused on these players and whether they are still deserving of the spots on the team that have been suggested.

Crosby, Staal's and Nash.  Good one.

better yet, bring marc staal over jordan staal and play eric staal with crosby and nash while throwing harry young back on defense for the hell of it.

crosby, staal's, nash and young. could be intimidating

are you serious man i see every flames game. iginla is as good as ever, top 10 in scoring last year, not as many goals but he is racking up the assists will still average between 35 and 45 goals and mid 90 points. he is a pretty damn good leader too.
