I made a posting about two-three weeks ago about this very topic.

Sundin will not wind up in Detroit, for two very big reasons, some of those reasons have been summarized again in this post.

First of all, the Maple Leafs asking price for Sundin will be way too high. When you look at what Detroit would have to give up to get a guy like Sundin, it would be a tough sell to have Kenny Holland pull the trigger on that deal.

Secondly, Detroit DOESN'T NEED Sundin. SURE, they would love to be able to add him into their lineup, but they have to be considered one of the favorites to win the cup already this year. If they look to make an addition at the deadline, it won't be for a top line bonafide player, but more likely a second-line scorer, someone else to take the pressure off of the big Datsyuk/Zetterberg line. These kind of players are available for much less than what the Leafs can get for Sundin. Even if you say Sundin's value is ONLY as good as Forsberg's was last year, and I personally think that is a stretch, as Sundin is still healthy as opposed to Forsberg's questionable body, then you would be looking at SIMILAR return for Sundin. That excludes Detroit right there.

There are teams in the NHL, specifically in the west, that will pay more for Sundin, as those Western teams still feel that they need to really add an impact player to hope to challenge Detroit for the conference. It won't take much for a team like Anaheim, San Jose, or even Dallas to look to add Sundin as a rental, and give up a major package to make sure that Detroit doesn't get him.

Cliff Fletcher is a smart man, the best thing that can happen for him is to consistently hear these rumors that Sundin may be going to Detroit, as it makes every team in the west look to up their bid.

One more thing to support. If 100% of NHL Euro captians have not been able to win a cup and 99% of cup winning captains are Canadian, no other stat matters, does it?

You don't make much sense. I agree with percussio, get a Canadian captain. Play the odds.

Why would you want to wait to see if a Euro can Captain a team to a cup? It will probably come, but not this year, probably not next either! Haven't Leafs fans been waiting long enough?

Cherry knows more about hockey than you will ever no about your own penis. So give it a rest ...Sundin's gotta go!

Sundin never said he wouldn't waive the no trade clause, he said he wants to remain a Maple Leaf.

If Sundin does go, I agree, he probably won't come back in July. His loyal ways may be tarnished if the Leafs do in fact move him. I'd be upset...

Well they do need a top 4 defensemen so Lilja doesnt have to fill in that roll. I think they're pretty good for scoring but i dont think somebody like Sergei Fedorov wouldn't hurt either. Plus, he wouldn't cost as much as a Mats Sundin would.

I doubt he's going to end up in Detroit. There's something to do with tax issues because he's legally a Canadian citizen, and he wants to remain in Canada - Vancouver, or Calgary - don't bet on him being dealt to Ottawa. His girlfriend also lives in Toronto, so one way or another, he'll be back next season, whether playing or in the organization. So if I had to put money on it, I'd see him get dealt to Vancouver, but most likely Calgary, as Calgary is reported on not asking for more than just Sundin.
