dude that offer sheet thing is brilliant. Heck I would talk to Weber and tell him I plan to give him an offer sheet with a compensation equaling a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (not sure but I would think is something like $5M-ish with $4M paid as a bonus). Then tell him that they would immediately sign an extension (that they negotiated before hand), and bam the Leafs pick up Weber for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

If Nashville matches then they lose him to FA and Toronto has their previous negotiation as a starting point.

I don’t think you can get either of those 3 big name players without moving Gardiner or Kessel or Lupul.

I think Toronto’s big move should be to go after Evander Kane.

I think you either have to trade Colborne, Kadri, Blacker and a 2nd, or a 1st, one of Kadri or Colborne and a 2nd.

The Deal has to be similar in price I believe as the Kessel trade.

I think Kane is going to score like Kessel. but he brings jam. he is a hard nosed, physical player. Toronto needs that up front regardless if he is a centre or winger.

With that, they should then move JVR to centre.

Otherwise, they should trade upcoming UFA in 2013 Joeffrey Lupul to SJ for Pavelski straight up.

Pavelski is one of the more underrated, consistent performers in the league. He is excellent two way player, who can play centre or wing, wins draws, can play the point on the PP, and is capable of scoring 25-30 goals. He’d help a lot.

The new top 6 would be:

Kane-Pavelski-Kessel
JVR-Grabovski-Kulemin

It opens the door to use MacArthur and Bozak, two former top 6 members, to be traded to upgrade either goal, their D or their 3rd/4th lines

It looks like the price is high for goaltending:

Gillis it was said wants 3 big time assets, while Bernier is said to be worth a high end prospect and a high draft pick.

The Leafs maybe should wait til the season starts and see how it goes, see who becomes available mid year. i think they’d be better served improving the D and being harder to play against.
