Red Wings Sign Jason Woolley

The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Jason Woolley of the Buffalo Sabres.

It was not secret that the Wings were shopping for a defenseman, after Jiri Fischer suffered a torn ACL, and will likely be out of the lineup for 4 to 6 months.

They needed a d-man, they basically got him for free, so why not? Worth a shot, though payroll is now higher. And, will be higher once Fedorov re-signs with big bucks.

Most teams would be very happy to have Wooley. Or at least you would think so. Buffalo is becoming a joke. Why doesn’t the league just move them to Winnipeg already?

  3. mikster says:

I was surprised they just let him go like this.

I think they need new management and especially a new ownership.

They got some good young players and they can’t do much. Fire Ruff and the GM.

Also, if anything, the team should stay in the Eastern Conference, and i hope it will be Quebec City.

Great move for Detroit. I said it once I will say it again; Woolley is underrated very much because he is (was) a Sabre. Now he will get the kind of attention he deserves.

Well Bettman keeps saying that the Sabres will stay in Buffalo, but talk around town (people, not media so this can’t be seen as a reliable source) is that he is preparing the team for a move. Why else would he be waiting so long to choose a new owner? If the team would just declare bankruptcy a sale would be so much easier. But also if the team declared bankruptcy the cost to buy the team would be much much much cheaper and maybe the NHL doesn’t want to sell the team that cheap.

And you’re right. Fire both Ruff and Regeir. They don’t know what they are doing at all. It’s so sad that I am a fan of the worst team in the NHL.

And you’re right, send the team to Quebec City (although I doubt that will ever happen). I drove up there this summer just to visit and I have to say that Quebec is the coolest city that I have ever been to, and it is also a city that loves hockey. Every store has a Nordiques jersey and/or an Avalance jersey in it. I saw some guy there walking around with a Nordiques jersey that had Roy’s name on it. I just thought that was awesome. Anyway, I want the Sabres to stay in Buffalo, but the chances are they won’t last past 2004 when the CBA expires. And when the team gets moved, move it to a hockey city like Quebec or Winnepeg.

Just to let everyone know…Wooley sucks as a defenseman.

I like this move. Woolley was always mentioned as an important cog in Buffalo’s run to the cup a few years ago, and it’s always nice to have that type of guy on your team.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t woolley a top-4 defenseman? That could lead to either exceptional balance or huge power on the detroit blueline should Fisher return on the 4 side of his projected 4-6 months.

    Woolley/Kuznetsov or Wallin or Bykov

    Dandenault/ Wallin, etc.

Sounds like a playoff-ready defense to me. And we know that we don’t have offense problems when it comes to the Wings…

Sure would be cool if Fischer would be back for the end of the season and the begginning of the playoffs, but I wouldn’t count on it. I’d much rather see him take the rest of the year off so he avoids as many future knee problems as possible. He’s young and if the Wings can afford to rest him then I think they should because he is our future #1 defenseman.
