Rumors from the Edmonton Journal

What the Oilers would have to give up for the 2nd overall

Want Kris Versteeg? take Brent Sopel too

– Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli keeps saying there is so little to choose between Hall and Seguin that he’s not trading his No. 2 pick, but if you were the Oilers and you wanted both Hall and Seguin , wouldn’t you be in Chiarelli’s ear offering not just Ales Hemsky but either Jordan Eberle or Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, just to see if you got his attention? Eberle’s a helluva player and the Swede might be, too, but how else do you get Chiarelli’s attention unless you offer one of your top prospects?

– If any team wants Kris Versteeg , here’s the likely scenario the Chicago Blackhawks are pitching: They will give him up for a second-round pick, but the team getting the winger also has to take defenceman Brent Sopel’s $2.2 million contract off their hands.

The Wild are dangling defenceman Brent Burns , who has unlimited potential, to get a front-line centre to help Mikko Koivu , and Philadelphia has got one to move in Jeff Carter , but the Flyers need a goalie, not a defenceman.

The Stars’ Mike Ribeiro is available in Dallas, too.

The Buffalo Sabres might be in the Sheldon Souray hunt because they only got 30 goals from all of their defencemen last season, including 11 from rookie Tyler Myers.

The Sabres also got only three goals on the power play from the back-end.

Souray and Sabres captain Craig Rivet played together in Montreal, which might be a hook.

For the right deal, Buffalo’s looking to move either centre Tim Connolly or Derek Roy , and winger Drew Stafford , who has stumbled as a first-round draft, is also in play.

How come there's no hockey players with funny names like Kaka?

  2. gregmash_Leafs says:

What about… Toronto- Kaberle, Reimer for Philly Jeff carter?

  3. gregmash_Leafs says:

I could also see Boston making a pitch for Versteeg easy.

    Boston- 2nd round pick,
    Chicago- Versteeg,Sopel
  4. dion1479 says:

This wouldn't happen. The Bruins traded Versteeg to Chicago, why would they want him back now?

  5. gregmash_Leafs says:

Well for one they traded him as a prospect and they probably didn't think he would turn out seeing as he was a fifth round pick. Two he's a winger and they're pretty short on those. And three its not uncommon for teams to get back players they traded in the past a prime example being Teemu Selanne,Jason Arnott and Erik Cole.

    I've said it before,

Jeff Carter to Minny for Schultz and Harding!

Minny needs a top centre. Done.
Philly, after getting their top four dman (Hamhuis) needs a depth defenceman and a goalie. Done.

  8. Uncleben says:

or Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour, Keith Tkachuk, Sean Avery, Brian Rolston, Tie Domi, Curtis Joseph, Doug Weight, Ryan Parent, Mathieu Schneider, Jordan Leopold, Bobby Holik, Mark Recchi, Ron Francis (kinda), Dominik Hasek, Luke Richardson, Drake Berehowsky

just to name a few guys who went back to organization that had previously given up on them.

situations, staff, needs, players themselves – they all change. teams bring back previous players all the time.

as listed above, two trades were made this past week alone that saw ex-players return to ex-teams (Arnott back to NJ and Parent back to Nashville)
